May 2023. A few East African beauties in the aloe garden. Aloe adigratana, schoelleri, monticola and sinana from Ethiopia. Aloe lukeana (the only one not in flower) from NE Uganda. Aloe pseudorubroviolacea from the Arabian peninsula in both red and yellow flowering forms. Aloe schoelleri—the long lost 🇪🇷 Eritrean endemic—was last year’s International Succulents Introduction @thehuntingtonlibrary as ISI 2020-16. This species was first described by Georg Schweinfurth, a Baltic German botanist from 🇱🇻 Latvia (then part of the Russian Empire) already in 1894 but subsequently forgotten for almost a century until John Lavranos, a Greek botanist from South 🇿🇦 Africa, managed to flower it in cultivation (both have aloe species named after them). The latest addition to my garden: Aloe schoelleri, the Amba Souara Gorge endemic of 🇪🇷 Eritrea. Although this rare species was first described by Schweinfurth as early as 1894—according to the current issue of Cactus & Succulent Journal—it was Lavranos that would later bring it to flower in cultivation. Aloe schoelleri is known from only one place in Eritrea on the Kohaito Plateau. It is a unique aloe with very small spines. Two other very attractive and well known species occur in the same area, A. camperi and A. elegans. A. schoelleri a stemless large plant which flowers in spring, the flowers are not affected by frost, the large leaves will be damaged by severe frost, it should be planted in protected spots in colder regions. As can be seen in the photos below, the flowers are very showy. Two nice big plants are to be seen in our new rockery close to the café.
