Spekboom plants in biodegradable pots for sale at our nursery. These plants have made the news recently and have become very popular. Not only are they water wise, but they are also quite good at sequestering CO2. The reason for this is in the way they fix carbon. They preform facultative CAM photosynthesis, meaning when they experience dry conditions they take up CO2 during the night, preventing water loss. They only use this system during dry conditions, meaning they absorb less CO2 in wet conditions. Therefore, Spekboom plants are very good at saving water when taking up CO2. Many other indigenous succulents, such as crassulas and aloes are just as good (arguably even better) at absorbing CO2 as this little plant. Sadly, the Spekboom rarely flowers in areas (such as Gauteng) with higher rainfall than its natural habitat. Which means that, while it is good to plant them in gardens, it is also important to create biodiverse indigenous gardens to attract important pollinator species. The spekboom should also not be used to displace other indigenous species occurring in natural areas (such as grasslands in Gauteng or fynbos in the Western Cape). . . In conclusion? Plant this beautiful, edible, water wise spekboom in your garden next to other indigenous plants, be careful not to displace other indigenous plants and, if you want to ensure your garden is a haven for pollinators why not build a bug hotel or pick up a solitary bee hotel at our nursery? Aloe sheilae from Saudi Arabia. It is only known from the hills west of Bishah and is an extremely endangered species, and will probably be extinct in its habitat in the near future. It is flowering now in our garden, this photo was taken during the past week. Aloe schoelleri is known from only one place in Eritrea on the Kohaito Plateau. It is a unique aloe with very small spines. Two other very attractive and well known species occur in the same area, A. camperi and A. elegans. A. schoelleri a stemless large plant which flowers in spring, the flowers are not affected by frost, the large leaves will be damaged by severe frost, it should be planted in protected spots in colder regions. As can be seen in the photos below, the flowers are very showy. Two nice big plants are to be seen in our new rockery close to the café.
