I have to say the Faber Castell Black Edition colored pencils are fast becoming my favorite pencils. As I was taping up the reference photo for my drawing session I have to admit I thought to myself, “why am I bothering to sketch this?”. I had the photograph I had the memory of the beauty of the place why spend an hour trying to recreate a difference version of it. In the back of my mind I knew this thought was silly, I have been at my art practice for long enough to know there are many, many benefits to creating art besides having a pretty picture to look at. So I continued on with my process. Soon I was surrounded by sea of colored pencils, it felt good, I lost myself and marvelled at the marks my hand was making. I even thought to myself at one point, “it’s like my hand knows what it is doing and is bypassing my mind”. Which in fact was a somewhat accurate assessment of what was happening. I’ve devoted quite a bit of time since last summer working on my drawing and illustration skills, I still have a of practice I want to do but I’ve built up enough muscle memory now that I can instinctively create what I want. What stuck out to me most of all is when I finally looked up from my finished drawing it felt like I was coming out of a trance. I felt like I had spent the last hour in a cocoon. I had an hour long break from anxiety, from worrying about the news, from feeling the pain in my body. I had an hour long break to observe a place I love, to really look at and notice the details and to lovingly recreate it in my own way. I strongly believe that as humans one of our prime purposes is to create and that can be so many things besides just artwork. I also cherish the gifts my creative time gives back to me. Yesterday I went for a walk in one of my favorite places in Nanaimo, Buttertubs Marsh. It is named Buttertubs because in the days before refrigeration butter and cheese were stores in nearby caves to keep them cool. It is now a lovely sanctuary right in the middle of town. I was having a difficult day yesterday. I felt like the world was hanging up on me and I was extremely emotional. I was sitting on the couch with an hour to go before work and I knew I needed to move some paint. So I sat down with some inks and fluid acrylic and my pad of stone paper and created this. I love watching the paints flow and move and I gently manipulate it as it starts to dry and then I walk away and come back after it is dry to see how it settles. I started creating again in earnest back in August after just dabbling at it for the last three years. The more I created the easier it because to create more. I started small with some simple classes and books and built on that. Now in December and into January I have had a really intense schedule I only had six days off in all of December and I even worked Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Eve and New Years Day. So of course it’s understandable that I fell of the creativity wheel again! And wow it’s amazing how just a couple weeks off makes it just that much harder to get going again! But I also know that I feel much less stress and anxiety when I am creating. Today I decided to just start easy again. So I broke out my 20 x 16 inch pad and spent a couple minutes moving some paint around! I searched the and drew a Rainbow Pony with them. I can tell I’m going to enjoy playing with these! I haven’t posted much in the last week. I’ve been filling in for some co-workers so I’ve been working a straight 11 day stint. As I’ve been reigniting a consistent art practice I’ve been working on increasing my sketching/illustration abilities. I’ve been working through a number of Skillshare classes. Here is the result on one of those classes. These didn’t turn out to be a style I really loved but I did learn something important to me. That is that I find it was easier to sketch if I put in my initial shapes using the Prismacolor Col-Erase blue pencil. It’s very light on the paper and frees me up as I start the sketches. I haven’t really shared any of these yet but since making a huge effort to get back into my creative practice in August and September I’ve been working very hard on my sketching/illustration skills. I’m far from an expert but I have learned a lot. Today I was creating a little project for a friend so I scanned and printed a few of my hand drawn illustrations and added color to the with my @spectrum_noir_ colored pencils. I’m not going to lie I am pretty darn proud of this painting! It’s not perfect (are they ever!) but it’s the largest watercolor painting I have done. Its 15 inches by 20 inches. It’s not always easy to paint larger with watercolor especially multiple layers of wet on wet paint. But I think it turned out okay! My parents saw the smaller version and asked me to do a larger one. I finished day 3 of #thiswritingdesk wilderness landscape challenge. I loved how this one was going in the initial layers and then a heat wave hit! With temperatures close to 40C with the humidity (that’s 104F for my 🇺🇸 friends) my layer dried in less than a minute making it very hard to get the blended misty affect I wanted. But I pushed ahead and finished it. Our heat wave should begin tapering off so I will give it another try in a week or so. I filled it with this amazing handmade paper from St Armand. This paper has a really soft feel and has sparkle flecks throughout. Today I just played with no expectations. I’m in a lot of physical pain today. Pain like I haven’t experienced in a few years. So I knew I needed to paint. I find that when I’m in pain and I start to paint I no longer feel the pain, even if it’s just briefly. Lately I’ve been punishing myself for not getting things done (because Im tired and anxious) by not allowing myself to “make art” until my “work” is done. . This is incredibly stupid and I know it. Firstly while I do have other commitments I’m an artist and making art is “my work”. Secondly I’m feeling increasingly overwhelmed because I won’t allow myself to do one of the things that brings me the greatest peace and joy as a form of self punishment when actually creating will likely make me more productive in the long run. I know it isn’t always easy folks but never punish yourself by taking away your own joy! There are enough other people in life who will try to do that for you. .
