Leading successful tours to see the elusive sea wolf takes a stubborn determination, patience, and often a bit of luck. Sometimes I get pushed to my breaking point, where it feels I’ve exhausted my body and my tracking skills. Many times I’ve come to a place where pushing on feels hopeless and I’m exhausted. This is when @gemsalsberg allows me to have a little break, before imploring me to “go try again, I know you’ll find something amazing!” Not only is she an excellent spotter, and fantastic cook, she’s studied the art of photography at Emily Carr, and is immensely talented behind the lens. She also gives the best constructive criticism you could ask for. Her encouragements last spring lead to some of the most incredible discoveries of my career, and with our next trip swiftly approaching, I can’t wait to see what we can achieve! 15 years ago, Gem was helping guide a BBC crew that were trying to film sea wolves, well before Seaforth was a thought in my head. Prior to that, art school, and a stint at Aperture magazine, she grew up living and working in tree planting camps all across the country. Ontario Peak - 12 miles and about 3,900 feet of elevation gain. Beautiful day in the morning, no wind, sunny and warm. Enjoyed lunch at the summit all by ourselves. Around 1:00 PM clouds came in and provided some shade, but also brought the chill with it. Saw 6 hikers going to Ontario on our way down, 2 of which turned around. Not sure if the last 2 made it. Trail condition: Took 5 hours 45 minutes to get to the summit and 4 hours 30 minutes to get back to the trail head. Because of the snow it will take longer than normal. Ice House creek is flowing! There is a section where the trail narrows down and a rope attached to the hill side. Be careful on this section if the night temperatures are below freezing as there will be ice there. Columbine Spring is flowing very nicely. It’s more like a creek flow right now. You can fill up there or later at the top of the creek where water is still running. There are a few boot pack sections of snow along the trail towards the top of the switchbacks before Ice House Saddle. In the morning they are icy and in the afternoon they are slushy. After Ice House Saddle, the trail to Ontario, Cucamonga, and Big Horn still has a lot of snow. Trail to Timber Mtn we did not see any snow heading that way. We saw 2 groups wanting to do Cucamonga or Ontario, but did not have the proper gear and they turned back. We used Crampons, Ice Axe, and helmets (and ropes for the kids) and proceeded towards Ontario. The section heading to Kelly Camp has a lot of steep traverses so be careful. At Kelly camp it’s still covered in snow. There is one little spot with no snow waiting for a tent. Still full snow all the way to Ontario peak. On the way back the snow was getting soft and post-holding was becoming an issue. Clothing: Mountaineering boots (lowest version on the totem pole)... You still want a boot that is stiff for crampons / snow, regular hiking pants, and layers on the top. Most of the time we only had a base layer + sun hoodie. Kids wore the same but usually 1 additional layer on the top.

As the first #light of #dawn I set out on an early morning safari, eager to explore the wonders of the African wilderness. With each passing moment, the anticipation grew, fueled by the possibility of encountering #Africa's most iconic predators. As our vehicle rumbled along the #dusty #trails, our guide's keen eyes scanned the horizon, searching for any signs of movement. And then, there it was: a flicker of movement amidst the tall grasses. As we drew closer, the outline of a massive lion emerged, followed by another, and another, until the entire pride came into view. I held my breath in awe as the #majestic #beasts sauntered gracefully across the #savanna, their powerful strides echoing the rhythm of the land. From the regal #lion with his mane flowing in the breeze to the sleek lionesses leading the way, each member of the pride exuded a sense of pride and strength. It was a sight that took my breath away, a reminder of the raw beauty and untamed power of the African #wilderness. As I watched the pride disappear into the golden light of the morning, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a magnificent spectacle. I

The Chinle Formation is made up of mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone. The story of an iconic Leopard Mother and her struggles to keep her cub alive. This is YF 11. First recorded in 2016, she’s 8 years or thereabouts, and has had two sets of litter. Two of her daughters YF 12 & YF 48 have had cubs of their own while making their territories in adjoining areas. We photographed YF11 when she was about to make a dash across the road with her cub, first sighted when the cub was a few weeks old in April of 2023. Going by these dates the cub could be probably 13 to 14 months old and would likely stay with the mother at least for another 6 to 8 months. I have posted an image of the mother and cub separately. The leopard mother’s protective instincts kick in when they sense danger and are very careful how they navigate and avoid challenges from both from suitors who could indulge in infanticide and other foe! Many cubs fail to make it adulthood unless their mums are extraordinarily skilled in nursing and protecting them till they are able to fend for themselves! Until then the struggle must go on! Lago de Tefé, esse gigante das águas que enfrenta uma seca severa. Como não ficar com o coração apertado ar ver imagens de tantos botos mortos? O @institutomamiraua já contabilizou cerca de 120. Fiquei me lembrando dessa tarde no mirante do mercado, onde passei um bom tempo admirando uns botos exibidos. Ninguém imaginava o que estava por vir. Mortandade de botos e peixes, fumaça que encobriu Manaus na semana passada, inúmeros mananciais secos na Amazônia como um todo, e hoje a Praia da Ponta Negra foi interditada. Enquanto isso, sigo acompanhando mesmo de longe e enviando energias positivas para o meu lugar preferido no Terra. Não tenho grandes ilusões a respeito do futuro ambiental do nosso planeta. Mas quero pedir a Deus, enquanto eu estiver por aqui, que aquele lugar permaneça verde e cheio de água. Cheio de plantas, cheio de bichos, cheio de vida! Me sinto tão grata por estar na Terra em um momento em que temos uma presença ainda abundante dos diferentes reinos (vegetal, animal, fungi), ao mesmo tempo em que temos tecnologia suficiente para experiências com conforto e segurança em meio à vida selvagem.
