The youngest of Bach's four musician sons was a latecomer: his father was 50 when he was born, and he himself was 15 when his father died. We know what it means: a certain paternal laxity in education and discipline! Indeed... Johann Christian is something of the black sheep of the family : he emigrates from Germany, makes music for the Italians and the English and (horror!) even converts to Catholicism. โช His music, too, turned the page on family tradition. Simpler, more sensual, more seductive: with him the galant style triumphed and spread across Europe. Living in London, he made contrasts of tempo โฉ and intensity a basic principle of his music. In other words, Sturm und Drang was really not far off... For Mozart's generation, he was the famous Bach! ๐ At the age of 8, Mozart was his pupil for 5 months in London: an essential teaching for the development of his unique style, especially for the symphony. ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐ / ๐ ๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด In the 1770s, Haydn had been for 10 years in the service of the Princes Esterhรกzy ๐คด๐ป, one of the richest and most powerful families in the Holy Roman Empire. As a family of music lovers, they recognised Haydn's incredible talent and gave him a great deal of artistic freedom to serve the greatness of the House. His Sturm und Drang years were an exceptional and crucial time in his development: often far from Vienna in the Esterhรกzy's Hungarian castle ๐ฐ, left musically to his own devices, Haydn experimented, invented and imagined far from any framework or standard. He tried out new expressive effects, and the Sturm und Drang style was perfect for this: it allowed him to play with contrasts and extremes without paying to much attention to musical traditions. The extraordinary Sun Quartets and the Farewell Symphony, with the musicians gradually leaving the hall at the end, are from these years. Along with Mozart's Symphony No. 25, this Symphony No. 44 is considered the nec plus ultra of instrumental Sturm und Drang. Yet there was nothing mournful about Haydn's life during his composition : according to an anecdote that was probably invented, Haydn would have liked his sublime adagio in E major to be played at his funeral. Full of the passionate, lyrical and energetic music he had heard there, he returned to dull Salzburg to take up a post as Konzertmeister to Archbishop Colloredo... a job as a lackey, wearing the wig and livery... ๐ After freedom, musical discoveries and adventures in Italy: Salzburg prison! ยซ Weโre not serious when we are 17 ยป? At 17, Mozart already felt he was entering the dull life of an adult, exploited and despised like his father... This frustration, rage and regret burst forth in Symphony No. 25, the first and only one he would write in minor, along with its big sister the No. 40, 15 years later. A breathless, jolting allegro, full of syncopations that break the rhythm and slow the movement down as if it were on the brink of the abyss, an andante that is almost even more frightening in its anxiety, the sad, intense nostalgia of the minuet, the horrific anguish of the last movement: this is chemically pure Sturm und Drang! ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ป๐ช๐ท๐ฐ In the 1760s, the symphony entered its turbulent, rebellious adolescence, with a new style that would take hold of it with the force of a storm: Sturm und Drang ! โโค๏ธโ๐ฅ "Storm and passion" or "storms and momentum": this is primarily a pre-Romantic literary style that culminated in Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774, a phenomenal success in Germany that was to influence the whole of artistic creation in Europe. In music, its beginnings were already perceptible in some of Gluck's operas from the 1760s, but the style really emerged in the 1770s, particularly in the symphonic genre. To frighten, to stun, to overwhelm the listener with intense emotions that should sweep them off their feet and make them lose control of themselves : those are the goals of the Sturm und Drang ! Extreme and irrepressible feelings, the dark and shadowy and sublime side of Nature are for him the most inspiring! That's why the sad, anguished minor keys are his favourite. With Sturm und Drang, composers seek to produce very precise effects on the listener: his or her heart must beat to the rhythm of the emotions they want to convey! But where does it come from? What are its origins? What musical forms from Baroque music gradually gave birth to it? A veritable constellation of Baroque forms bent over the cradle of the symphony, each bringing some virtue like in fairy tales: the sonata da chiesa and da camera or in trio and quartet from northern Italy, certain concerto forms with almost no soloist and no dialogue effects and certain suites for orchestra, and above all the Italian overture, with its alternation of fast - slow - fast tempos. From the middle of the 18th century, the symphony evolved and grew rapidly: at first often for strings alone, it was augmented by more and more varied instruments, woodwinds and brass, and its number of movements was gradually fixed at 4: a rapid first movement in sonata form, a slow movement, a minuet with a central trio, and a rapid and lively finale. In Europe, several important centres were developing where the symphony was enriched by experiments and discoveries: Berlin, then Hamburg with Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach, Paris with Gossec, Manneihm with Stamitz, London with Johann Christian Bach (two cities and two composers with whom Mozart would rub shoulders!). extremely delighted and grateful for being part of such an interesting and special chamber music project!โจ Working on the "diamond" of chamber music ever written for clarinet - Brahms's clarinet Quintet op.115 - from historical perspective, which means not only using instruments of the time but also tying to recreate in details the performing way. Listening to the recordings from the beginning of the 20th century, played by the legendary clarinetist of the past Charles Draper (1869-1952), who, as a young clarinetist heard the first performance of the Quintet in England played by the musicians it was written for - Richard Mรผhlfeld and the Joachim Quartet, makes me think how beautiful and different that musical language is! How exciting, how alive and in the same time how contrary it sounds comparing to what one used to nowadays. The process of understanding this language by listening again and again, trying out tempo rubato, portamenti, playing not together ๐ etc. until it became part of my identity is really a unique experience! Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in 1806 for the young Franz Clement. It became a model for the maturing Romantic violin concerto, especially through its rhapsodic slow movement. In such cases, it is the soloist or Konzertmeister who provides the necessary rhythmic impulses. It was not until the end of the 19th century that the presence of a conductor was systematically expected, when conductors such as Richard Wagner were seen as โstar conductorsโ.
