Happy birthday to Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman! 🎂 (1882-1945) The celebrated self-taught artist began his career as a journalist and apprentice printer, after which he set up his own print shop in Groningen. Werkman’s artistry flourished during the Second World War as he became more and more productive, stimulated by a growing interest in his work. After Werkman’s death in April 1945, a commemorative exhibition was promptly organised at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Since then, Werkman’s oeuvre has found much appreciation, both in the Netherlands and abroad. 🖼 We are proud to present several of Werkman’s works in our upcoming auction! The first, which featured in the large retrospective exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, is No. 9, from the ‘Series of Heads’, that Werkman painted just a couple of years prior.
