Portable drum and full band tracking rig revised. Now it has 5 channels of powerful @soundtechniquesusa EQ with two ZR7064 channel strips and 3 Mersey 500 series units (for toms). Two fully discrete @spectra1964 STX100s for overheads, a Morin Heights Decade pre-amp plus an @thisisapiaudio 3124v for more mic pres and/or the Sunset Sound lunch box (would be used for full band or drums). An extra H2 Helios 2 channel lunchbox also handy and ready if more mic pre/EQ is needed. I am trying to do the processing earlier such as at the tracking stage. Just not sure whether to compress drums on the way in or save that step for more flexibility later. This is my portable tracking chameleon console with modern recreations of 4 classic studio sounds. Sunset Sound’s modified API, Abbey Road’s TG 12345 (Beatles, Floyd), Spectrasonics/Spectra 1964 which was the Record Plant and may be the closest mic pre to the console at Advision where Yes’s Close to the Edge was recorded and then the Helios which was used on albums from Genesis, Led Zeppelin, The Who and many others. I can pretty easily bring these three units to a session to record almost anything that’s 11 channels or less or have it supplemented if more channels are required. It’s more about the character of these studio consoles in such a portable rig that appeals to me. There’s also a vintage API mic pre done when Brent Averill did them with 312 cards instead of making his own BAE ones. A lot of variety yet compatible with each other too. I’m experimenting with the idea of having in line chains of comps and EQ simply pre-patched in between the Lynx Aurora (n) and the SSL Sigma. In this case there’d be no patchbay. A sacrifice in flexibility in trade for a more streamlined approach that’ll get used more often and less wiring. I don’t know if it’ll stay this way, but, it seems to be worth a shot. This 8 slot lunch box is really only 4 channels with the EQ/Dyn/LMC/Filter running into each other in the back with just a switch. MIC PREAMPLIFIER: And here, we applied a 56mV input signal, and got a 51.6 Volts peak-to-peak differential output. So that's approx 60dB gain. i.e. 1000x voltage gain. ELECTRONICS TIP: If you don't have a differential probe, you can use the MATH function of your oscilloscope. CH1 is my input signal, and CH2 and CH3 are my output signals (HOT + COLD). So just do a MATH function of CH2 - CH3, to get differential output waveform (shown as the dark purple trace on scope).
