Today marks the birth anniversary of Samuel Finley Breese Morse in 1792. Morse was an American inventor and painter, widely known for his invention of the telegraph, which was the precursor to the modern telecommunication system. Initially recognized for his skill as a portrait painter, he later contributed to the development of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs. In 1837, he co-developed Morse code and played a significant role in the commercial use of telegraphy. Morse was issued a patent for the telegraph in 1847 by Sultan Abdülmecid, who personally tested the new invention at the old Beylerbeyi Palace in Istanbul. In 1849, he was elected an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. After his death, the original patent was passed down to the Breese family. It is worth mentioning that Morse held some controversial views in his personal life.
