Milwaukee is home to a diverse collection of architecture, which I got to visit this past fall. This is the Tripoli Shrine Center, a Moorish Revival-style building based on historic architecture from Morocco, which was built in 1926-1928 and was designed by Clas, Shepard & Clas. The building takes inspiration from historic mosques, palaces, and tombs from across the Islamic world, between Spain and Morocco in the west and India in the east. The building takes its overall form from the Taj Mahal, with a similar dome and corner towers to the famous mausoleum. The building also features polychromatic tiles and brickwork, based on Moorish and Islamic architecture, which features geometric motifs. The building was part of the practice of the Shriners of adopting symbols and architecture from the Islamic world to represent their identity as an organization, which influenced their meeting halls, known as temples, which can be found in various cities across the United States. Despite the appropriation of the aesthetics of the Islamic world, the Shriners, established as an organization in 1870, are associated with the Freemasons, and have little-to-nothing to do with the Islamic faith. The Tripoli Shriners Temple features multiple corner towers that resemble minarets, a polychromatic tile dome atop the middle of the front wing, flanked in front by two smaller domes, Mudéjar-style polychromatic stonework and brickwork, keyhole-shaped windows, a large pointed arched opening over the front entrance door with a decorative tile surround, crenellated stone parapets, and camel statues flanking the front steps. The building today remains in use as a Shriners Temple, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

This project encapsulates the ideal design elements for a thriving sober community and housing environment. The unique shape of this building separates the residents from heavy-drinking neighbors while simultaneously creating a peaceful atmosphere within its premises. The central courtyard is utilized for circulation and permits private and undisturbed outdoor access. Project 2 - UG 3 - ARCH 3420 The Geode - Sober Living Community ————————————————————— The Geode is a proposal for a collective residence designed for an unacknowledged student population at The Ohio State University. A specific demographic that is typically unrecognized, especially in college, is women in the sober community. This project re-examines the conventional program of student housing and reconceptualizes residential design. The Geode seeks to enhance the living conditions for sober women and establish a sense of community, both indoors and outdoors. This project encapsulates the ideal design elements for a thriving sober community and housing environment. The unique shape of this building separates the residents from heavy-drinking neighbors while simultaneously creating a peaceful atmosphere within its premises. The central courtyard is utilized for circulation and permits private and undisturbed outdoor access. Overlooking the courtyard are individual units, specifically arranged and oriented to establish personal balconies and allow for direct sun access. In addition, extruded windows are precisely positioned to direct sunlight into the building at different points of the day.
