Today we celebrate 70 years since our Catholic Chaplaincy opened its doors to university students for the first time. All props to Fr Tom Towers for his innovative approach. The idea started at St Andrew’s Church and became a reality in 1954 when the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle purchased number 14 Windsor Terrace. In the 1970s number 15 was bought doubling the size of the facility, which saw the later creation of the Vat’n’Can bar! In 2018 the Chaplaincy returned to its roots, relocating to St Andrew’s in Worswick Street. Initially, the Chaplaincy served King’s College Durham, which was to become Newcastle University, and then for Rutherford College, the early incarnation of Northumbria University. We ask you to pray for the thousands of people who have benefited from seven decades of ministry, our current students, who are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic, and future students yet to come. If I could tell you one thing...🩷 If you could meet Jesus face to face, what would you tell Him? What do you think He would tell you? Maybe this question brings joy and hope to your heart, and maybe it brings panic. Would He see all the things I've done wrong? Would He see my lack of holiness? Would He turn away from me the way people have, when they saw my problems or pain? Maybe the people you turned to in your deepest need, just ignored you, or hurt you deeper. Maybe it was a parent, or a friend, or even a spouse. And as much as you know about our faith, in your heart, a question lingers - would it be different to meet God? Maybe this question makes it difficult to open up in prayer, or in church, or even after Communion. Maybe you feel unworthy to even be in church or to pray or to veil. Friend, I just wanted to remind you that Jesus would look at you with infinite love. You have never, ever seen infinite love before. It is only found in Him. No human experience can prepare you, because it won't be like meeting anyone else, ever. It is a very thin veil that prevents you from seeing Him when you pray. He knows when it's the right time. (For many of us, He is waiting till we are Home). When you speak to Jesus, or receive Him, try to come with trust in His goodness above all. It would give Him such consolation, especially if you do this when it is most difficult for you🩷 He is the One you can ALWAYS turn to. No matter what you have done. No matter how much you might have strayed from God. Even if you feel like the worst sinner. Even if you don't understand how to pray, or repent, or how to find God.
