Bob Jane & George Reynolds’ 1964 Ford Cortina GT - Bathurst Winner. The second ever race to be held at Bathurst, and what was then the Bathurst 500 (for 500 miles), was won by Jane and Reynolds in what was technically an all Cortina podium. The race organisers didn’t recognise an outright race winner, and rather just the winners of each class. 🎉🎉Shiny Shot Friday 🎉🎉 This 1965 Ford Cortina Mk1 GT500 is 1 of only 110 built and manufactured specifically for racing. The Cortina was the outright winning car at the 1965 Armstrong 500, the sixth running of the Bathurst 500 touring car race, winning it the Armstrong Trophy. This was the first time in the history of the event that there had been an official award for the outright winner. The Holden EH Special S4 was Holden’s first crack at Improved Production racing way back in 1963. These special little cars received a few extras back in the day; slightly better brakes, clutch and tailshaft as well as a 12 gallon fuel tank and Holden’s new 3spd manual box. The engines themselves were subject to greater care when being assembled, too. Previously, the 179ci six was only available with GM’s Hydramatic auto box. They also had a more expansive tool kit in the boot to comply with the Armstrong 500’s rules stating that all running repairs during the first half of the race had to be carried out by the driver. Reports suggest somewhere between 115-124 S4s were built in 1963 - shockingly its thought that only 11 remain to this day. Photos of Lex Bailey and Phil Clumisky’s entry into the 1963 Armstrong 500 at Bathurst. FB Holdens were perhaps the least speedy of the Holdens so their entry was an optimistic one. They came eighth out of 11 in their class (class C) with two cars not finishing. They were mostly beaten by EH Holdens and the new Cortinas which were tearing up race tracks then. Bathurst 1964. Armstrong 500 which was the premier event prior to becoming what we know now as ‘Bathurst’. My old man losing it on Hell’s Corner (don’t call it ‘Turn 1’!) in the Studebaker. I just came across this square Kodachrome slide in my dads collection and written on the back is "famous fight at forest elbow.Bathurst.1964.".From a little bit of research I found this "The way to have watched the 1964 Armstrong 500 was from your armchair, with the television turned up high and a jug of rum toddy at your elbow. For it was so cold at Bathurst that spectators at Forest Elbow started a fist fight in order to keep warm. Brian ("Pierre") Foley had the heater going in his Citroen throughout the race; the drivers, all told, were more comfortably off than the spectators."
