Then again when Ex realises (in his heart) that he has become human as Arthur holds him in his arms, comforting him as he dies. That scene is just beautiful in its sincerity, and in delivering the message of the story ❤ Love can change your very nature. ⚾️ THE UNNATURAL: How can I dislike any episode that begins with baseball... aliens... and Mulder & Scully flirting?? OMG. Also, DD is looking quite fine in this episode... quite, quite fine. But, back to the episode. M. Emmett Walsh was a great choice to play Arthur Dales, Arthur Dales's brother. I was sad to hear Darren McGavin had a stroke before filming so they had to change the episode, but I think it worked out all right. I do love that they kept the same "young Arthur Dales" though. Honestly, this was such a cute episode. DD did a wonderful job writing and directing this. There's so much humor and I loved the idea of the great baseball players being aliens. It makes so much sense! So many of the show's mythology episodes are serious and dark, so this was a really fun, fresh take on the show's central storyline. Of course, you leave the episode wondering if this was all a true story or not, but that's part of the fun. And then, of course, the last scene with Mulder teaching Scully how to hit a baseball. SWOON. The entire episode left me smiling like crazy. So good, you guys. . . 🕷TRAVELERS: It's the Old Man! Oh, how I love Darren McGavin. So nice to see him in an episode of The X-Files. Just his voice takes me back to watching A Christmas Story every year of my life. I really enjoyed his character, both the McGavin version and his younger self. Getting to see a bit more insight and background on Mulder's father as well was really lovely. I'm not too sure about the "monster" aspect of it because it seemed like such an odd choice for trying to create human/monster hybrids (alien spiders??) but it definitely sparked the ick factor in me! While this wasn't one of those "yes!" episodes for me, it was entertaining enough and I honestly think I would enjoy anything and everything Darren McGavin is in. I honestly with Arthur Dales would have shown up sooner, been a confidante to Mulder. Ah, wishful thinking. For a flashback/filler episodes, this was pretty solid! Not as fun as Unusual Suspects, but just as good, I think. I also love that, while not identical, Arthur’s robe is so reminiscent of the Old Man’s in A Christmas Story. . .
