Multi-talented Lionel Barrymore (born April 28, 1878) who once claimed that the only reason he followed his famous family of the Drews and the Barrymore’s onto the stage was so he could eat, enjoyed a career that spanned over 50 years. • Late in life, because of a hip injury, he used a wheelchair, which only added to his irascibility as the villainous Mr. Potter in director Frank Capra’s Yuletide classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946), with James Stewart and Donna Reed. • Lionel was also known also known for playing Dr. Leonard Gillespie in MGM’s nine “Dr. Kildare” films. • He famously said he’d have preferred to be an artist or composer than an actor, yet he became an outstanding success of stage, screen, and radio. His yearly radio interpretation of Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” became an annual tradition for years. • Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the eldest of the three children of Maurice Barrymore and Georgie (née Drew) and brother of Ethel and John. He made his stage debut aged six, quit aged 15 to paint, but soon returned, only to marry and quit a second time determined to become an artist in Paris. • Broke, he returned to the U.S and reached out to D.W. Griffith, who got him work at the Biograph Studios. He was signed for $10 a day. • His early films include “The New York Hat,” with a young actress, Mary Pickford. At the same time, he began to write screenplays as well as thrilling audiences onstage in New York. • In 1925, he headed to Hollywood, and was kept busy acting in as many as six films a year. First one me ➡️ second one “Lilith” ☠️ Some characters get under your skin in a good way, like this one. Bad ass, hold no prisoners, master manipulator. However, despite appearances she deepened my ongoing work around the value of clear communication, of knowing what you want and asking directly for that. That clear communication is ultimately kind, and stating your needs is hot AF. As someone who “doesn’t like to rock the boat” and finds it a challenge to communicate my needs, the support I received from this character to do just that was well received. To be anxiety free in this space was liberating. Next time you have a challenge to face, ask yourself “What would Lilith do?” The answer would probably be terrifying so maybe just in the vein of …🤣😎 #characteractor #feelthefearanddoitanyway #lifeswork
