En 1975 se estrenó la película "Dog Day Afternoon" (Tarde de Perros) de Sidney Lumet, protagonizada por un joven Al Pacino (que ya venía de éxitos como El Padrino y Serpico) y el gran John Cazale . Esta es de esas películas que funcionan casi como una pieza documental. Un auténtico y real viaje en el tiempo, al Brooklyn de los setenta. La película estuvo basada en hechos reales ocurridos en 1972 durante el asalto a un banco en Brooklyn (Nueva York), incidente que fue catalogado como «uno de los más peculiares» y «más patéticos» intentos de robo a un banco. Debido a la inexperiencia en este tipo de atracos, el robo, que había sido planeado para ser ejecutado en apenas diez minutos, se convertiría en una trampa y en un espectáculo para la televisión en vivo. El film fue muy bien recibido por el público y la critica. Por esta interpretación, Al Pacino fue nominado como "Mejor Actor" a los premios Oscar. On line la recensione di “Serpico” Visto l’abuso che ormai sento fare del termine cult legato a un film, sono andato in giro nel web per vedere le varie definizioni che ne vengono date. Wikipedia ci dice: in inglese cult movie o semplicemente cult è un’opera cinematografica che ha superato il livello del successo per arrivare a quello di icona sociale, mentre Treccani afferma: film che riscuote un successo di lunga durata ed è particolarmente ricercato dal pubblico degli appassionati e infine la Repubblica: Film che continua ad avere un pubblico appassionato anche molto tempo dopo la sua uscita, e indipendentemente dal suo successo commerciale. Sono rimasto molto perplesso dal risultato di questa ricerca, escludendo la prima definizione, che ritengo molto fuorviante, le altre due le trovo molto limitate e che non danno la reale dimensione del suo significato. Non si parla, ad esempio, dell’importanza che il periodo storico ha per tale catalogazione o del fatto che esistono cult settoriali (ad esempio fantascientifici) e altri più popolari. Entrando nello specifico, Serpico ha acquisito tale etichetta, cult appunto, non perché invadesse i sogni degli spettatori ma per l’aver identificato un determinato ambito storico/sociale condendolo della caratteristica immortale dell’andare contro l’ingiustizia. E’ vero che entrando in quest’ambito non è, e non poteva essere altrimenti, arrivato, alla massa, ma è anche vero che, come detto, quella non è una caratteristica essenziale per considerarlo, appunto un film di culto. La domanda è al limite, ed è poi il motivo di tutta questa disquisizione e delle preventive ricerche, se esso possa realmente entrare in questa categoria. JONN CASSAVETES -CASSAVETES POR CASSAVETES (2001)- RAY CARNEY ------------ Figura clave en los inicios del cine independiente americano, John Cassavetes dirigió once largometrajes a lo largo de tres décadas, al margen de su intensa dedicación al teatro, la escritura y la interpretación. Ray Carney, autor de uno de los estudios más completos de su obra, señala que en el momento de su fallecimiento, el 3 de febrero de 1989, a los 59 años, su trabajo había alcanzado reconocimiento en Europa, pero el Cassavetes director todavía era casi un desconocido en su país natal. En 32 años, sólo dos de sus películas, FACES (1969) y A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974), había recaudado en taquilla o recibido algún tipo de elogio por parte de la crítica. Las breves menciones en los informativos lo recordaron por su faceta como actor, y si mencionaba alguna película o emitían un breve clip, era de DOCE DEL PATÍBULO o LA SEMILLA DEL DIABLO. A lo largo de estas últimas décadas, la obra de John Casavetes ha sido redescubierta y reconocida como fundamental en la evolución del cine americano, ampliamente difundida en distintos soportes y retrospectivas. Una concepción del cine que mantiene implícita su integridad, la férrea determinación por la libertad creativa y el riesgo. Power's biggest problem is that the script seems to aim for some profound insight into the political machine, while feeling a bit superficial in the end (even though the end montage does work tremendously). Lumet's direction is solid, but not his strongest work, similarly to the The Morning After, his next film, it's not as precise as his better work.
