"During my first year of dental school, I was the treasurer of our chapter at Midwestern! Getting more involved on the chapter level and connecting with people across our district has allowed me to find a community - a place where I felt like I could lean on to people and find genuine connections! I recognized early on that ASDA isn’t just an organization, it is a place where everyone belongs. The people I got to connect to within our district got me excited to learn more about how we can support one another! I truly enjoyed working with a team of like-minded individuals and collaborating with dental students from other schools. Building new friendships was an incredible aspect of the experience. Additionally, I am excited to take on the role of one of the Pre-Dental Co-Chairs this year 🦷. "I am so excited to get involved with the D10 board because it is an amazing opportunity to get involved and meet new people also interested in dentistry. There are so many wonderful and impressive students within our district of ASDA. I hope to have even the smallest of impacts on the lives of these people and make some life long friends!" Member Mondays are back, and it is with great enthusiasm that we kick things off with one of our Chiefs of Staff, Summer Furrer! Summer is a D2 at the University of Utah. A fun fact about her is that she has been a vegetarian her whole life and has never eaten meat. Summer, what inspired you to get involved with ASDA District 10? "I believe in giving everything a shot, and deciding after what suits me best. When I first started school, I was struggling to find a club that gave me that spark of excitement. On a last minute whim, I asked our ASDA chapter president two days before Annual Session 2023 if there were any spots left for me to head over to Seattle with them. Pure luck, there was and I have been hooked on ASDA ever since. I encountered dental students from across the nation who were united by their passion for effecting change. The sense of purpose and community I experienced was palpable, and I knew I had found my place. ASDA opened my eyes to the broader scope of dentistry and through it, I’ve discovered my newfound passion for advocacy. This realization fueled my drive to take on higher leadership roles within ASDA, as I strive to contribute to its continuous improvement and empower future generations of dental students." ✨ASDA NLC 2023 ✨ Members from all seven of our chapters had the opportunity to attend ASDA’s Annual National Leadership Conference this past weekend. This conference featured amazing workshops ranging from topics of financial aspects of dentistry 💰, technology 💻, building your brand 📍, unconscious bias 👏, to advocacy 🧑⚖️ . On top of that, we had the privilege to meet and network with fantastic leaders of our community. We made connections across all of the nation’s dental schools that we know we’ll never forget. Tomorrow marks the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, so we’re showcasing one more dental student. ✨ Meet Sonia Ramirez!✨ Sonia is a second year dental student at Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health “While I was in high school, I enrolled in a dental assisting program that introduced me to the world of dentistry and gave me a firsthand look at what dentists do. It was during my internship for this program that I felt a strong calling to pursue a career in dentistry. I had always known I wanted to work in healthcare, utilize my artistic side, and apply scientific research to enhance the health of the population. Dentistry checked off all these boxes and more, making it the perfect fit for my future. When I was applying to dental school, I researched numerous institutions, but ASDOH stood out to me the most. The school's mission to produce dental professionals well-versed in comprehensive human healthcare, rather than just focusing on teeth, resonated deeply with me. As a D2 today, I am so happy with my decision to attend ASDOH. 🎉 In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month🎉, we’d like to introduce you to Joselene Piedra-Rodriguez! Jossy is one of our third year dental student at Oregon Health and Science University. “Hi I’m Jossy! On my first day of high school my English teacher asked us to write about our goals. She explained that these goals would help us find, but not define, our success in our future careers. An example she gave was about her older brother who had studied to become a dentist but would chronically faint at the sight of blood. She emphasized that although he was not able to meet his goal of becoming a dentist, he still experienced success by learning about his own strengths and weaknesses. Not only did I leave my english class with new goals that day- I left with a desire to explore dentistry. Along with the ironic introduction to pursuing a career in dentistry, I had experienced what it was like to grow up in a financially unstable household. As a child I saw how difficult it was for my parents to make a living for us. My parents had immigranted from Mexico before I was born. For many years I saw them experience financial hardship with such grace. My parents tried to hide the burden they felt from their jobs, but I always knew that they were working their hardest for the least compensation in return. Taking advantage of my educational opportunities was my first step in breaking that generational curse. Dentistry is what I set my heart on because it has the qualities that I look for in a job- attention to detail, personal interaction with others, care giving, art, science. It is a no brainer! I enjoy doing all of those things. I am now a third year student at OHSU and I couldn’t be happier! Studying in Oregon has allowed me to stay close to my friends and family who have been my biggest motivation. As a DMD candidate I have the potential to give back to my wonderful parents, who tried their best for me. Why dentistry? “During high school, my involvement with the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) organization allowed me to shadow and explore various healthcare professions. It was during this period that my interest in dentistry emerged, leading me to participate in the Dental Science competition at both the Regional and National HOSA conferences. This experience ultimately made me realize that a career in dentistry promised a path of lifelong learning and the chance to build meaningful connections within the community all while enhancing the overall health of individuals.” Why your program? “During my undergraduate career, I had the privilege of working at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, where I was part of a federally funded program dedicated to offering free medical care to economically disadvantaged older adults. Many of these seniors were reliant on Medicaid, Medicare, or had no access to any medical insurance. My four-year experience working closely with this underserved population ignited a passion within me for serving underserved communities. This sense of purpose significantly influenced my decision to pursue my dental education at the University of Utah School of Dentistry. The University of Utah School of Dentistry is the primary provider for Adult Medicaid Dental Benefit patients in the state of Utah, allowing dental students to provide treatment to three distinct groups: individuals who are blind and disabled, those covered under Targeted Adult Medicaid, and the elderly. Furthermore, the program trains dental students to begin providing patient care as early as their second year of dental school. 🎉In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month🎉, we are excited to introduce you to another one of our dental students! Meet Carlos Moya, a second year dental student at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH). “I am originally from Sacramento, California, and I am of Cuban and Mexican descent. I went to undergrad at UC Davis (go aggies!) where I majored in Cognitive Science, and followed that up by completing a 1-year post baccalaureate program at CSU East Bay. When not cramming for exams, I enjoy spending my free time hanging out with friends, hiking, photography, and exercising! I also have one older sister who is currently a surgery resident in Oakland, California. My sister and I were the first members of our family to enter the healthcare field, which was daunting at first, however I feel grateful everyday that I get to improve the health of others! My interest in dentistry didn’t begin until later in my academic career, but it was solidified when I began volunteering in public health settings such as community health clinics and underserved areas. Witnessing firsthand the obstacles that these individuals have to endure to access care really opened my eyes and this is the reason that I chose to come to ASDOH for the tremendous amount of dedication they provide for the community. In addition, I love the diverse student body and faculty that we have and the family orientated mindset at ASDOH. As a son of immigrant parents, diversity and inclusion were huge factors in my life and one of the many reasons why I chose ASDOH. Growing up in a Latino household, many values were instilled in me from a young age, such as dedication and hard work. I grew up following in my sister’s footsteps in the healthcare field, and I quickly learned that these values are the cornerstone of achieving anything in life, especially doctorate degrees. 🎉 In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month🎉, we are excited to introduce you to some of our dental students! Meet Maria Duval, a third year dental student at Oregon Health and Science University. Why dentistry? Being from rural Oregon, my heart lies with the ambition to serve those smaller communities where oral health care isn’t accessible. I look forward to serving where there is a need and fighting oral health care disparities in these communities and underrepresented populations. Why your program? I want to practice in Oregon after completing my dental education so OHSU naturally had my attention. I value that the program provides clinical experiences as early as our first year. Having a smaller class sizes was also important to create a solid support system throughout the program. How does culture play a role in your life and career? I am a first-generation Mexican-American. I live with constant imposter syndrome and fear of what others would think if I failed. Especially knowing the sacrifices that my parents made to give me the opportunities I have today. Hispanics make up a substantial portion of our country, yet only ~5% of dentists are Hispanic. I have heard many stories of patients being mistreated because of language barriers. Now having my own patients, I see the light in their faces when they realize they don't have to fight to understand their doctor. Knowing I am a professional that speaks their language gives me great pride and I love knowing that I can make an impact in someone's life. I hope to continue to be able to improve representation in the dental profession. If you could go back 10 years and give yourself advice, what would you say? I would tell myself that our successes are not mere accidents, don’t let anyone diminish that, and celebrate the accomplishments often. It is amazing the amount of information that we have learned, how much we have grown, and the experiences we have endured. Being in dental school has felt like a balancing act but I am so thankful for the people I have in my life who have given me patience, grace, love, and support through it all. #asda #asdadistrict10 #hispanicheritagemonth

Join us for an empowering Indigenous People’s Day webinar with Kerri Smith Slingerland and Darin Smith! Mark your calendars for October 9th, 2023 from 5-6pm PST, as we celebrate and learn more about this event and the skills to work with American Indian/American Native patients. Kerri Smith Slingerland (she/her) is a citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians (Anishinabek), a mother of 2 soccer-playing sons, and a relative to many. Her formal education resulted in a Master’s degree in both Social Work as well as Healthcare Management. She has worked in healthcare, mental health and substance use treatment with people experiencing houselessness and housing insecurity for 22 years in Portland, currently as a Clinical Outreach Social Worker at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Kerri is very grateful to all of the patients who have trusted her with the gift of sharing their stories and she has learned important lessons from each of them. She spends time relaxing near water, in a hammock, or with her siblings and family. Darin Smith (they/them) is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. They currently serve as the Affiliate Relationship Manager of the Office of Community and Support at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Darin was inspired to enter the field of health and human services after seeing their older siblings making an impact in the lives of others through interpersonal and systemic methods. Darin holds a Masters of Public Health and Masters of Social Work from the University of Michigan with particular focus in health behaviors and education in working with Elders. They are dually focused in their career on honing their skills in healthcare administration while pursuing their Licensure of Clinical Social Work to serve as a counselor for individuals experiencing death, loss and grief. She received a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Utah in 2018. For over a decade, Ariel's passion and expertise has been working with LGBTQ+ communities through advocacy, education, and research. She currently serves as Outreach Network and Development Specialist for the University of Utah Transgender Health Program and provides education and training on LGBTQ+ health equity topics. She is a 2021 Utah Business Living Color award honoree and has been featured on a variety of podcasts, panel events, and radio shows on the future of transgender health and LGBTQ+ advocacy. Seeing all the hard work and time the social chairs put into making cuspid cup so successful is one of the gems I put into my jar of why I do what I do! I love seeing my colleagues enjoy the events we put on as well as joining my friends in our growth as leaders. This was one of our first events as ASDA board and seeing the smiles on the faces of our ASDA leadership and all the attendees was well worth blowing up hundreds of balloons for the colorful balloon arch. Although cuspid cup 2022 concluded in the dark, we had not only our ASDA leadership but plenty of friends in our cleanup crew who made sure not one person is left behind.
