You don't see too many XD Falcons around anymore, and this is a very interesting spec. It's the base GL sedan, but with the largest of the optional V8s: a 5.8-litre (351 cubic-inch) V8, mated with a four-speed manual transmission. DIN outputs were 149kW and 415Nm (200 hp and 306 lb-ft). This V8 slotted in above 3.3 and 4.1 sixes plus a 4.9 (302 cubic-inch V8) Look inside and you'll see the period umbrella handle handbrake and the stalk-mounted horn. The XD entered production in 1979, and though it had crisp, thoroughly modern styling reminiscent of the European Granada, it not only was completely unrelated to that model, but it also shared a lot with the XC Falcon it replaced, though it was slightly smaller and lighter. Wheels withheld its Car of the Year award that year, as it considered neither the XD Falcon nor any other new model that year to be a sufficient advancement to get the award. The XD lasted until 1982 when the updated XE launched, finally ditching rear leaf springs – at least in the sedan. The wagon and ute stuck with them. By the way, to give my North American followers some perspective, this was considered a large family car here – it was larger than the new Holden Commodore, something that endeared it to fleets. Nevertheless, it was around 300mm (11.8 inches) shorter than a North American first-generation "compact" Granada (which could also trace itself back to the original Falcon). The Falcon and its better-equipped Fairmont derivative were even around 200mm shorter than the "compact" US Fairmont.
