THE RISE AND FALL OF FALCON/COBRA BUILD NO.222 “After deciding to sell my Apollo blue XBGT sedan which had 351 4V heads, large cam, extractors, Holley and 4 speed I saw an ad for a Cobra with 6,000 kms for sale for $8,990 in The Sun newspaper. It was a 1 owner vehicle. I decided to trade the XB in on the Cobra at Kenros Motors in Heidelberg, Vic. The deal was done in early May 1979. It looked better than it went, a stock, chocked 4.9 litre V8 and 4 speed. I ended up putting in a cam and lifters, and it went a little better. It was no comparison really to the XBGT, but it looked the part. I decided to sell the Cobra, after seeing the new XE ESP Fairmont Ghia’s arriving in the dealerships and the last falcon V8 looming I wanted one of those. I tried to sell the Cobra to a few dealers, with no success. Seemed like no one wanted these two door Falcons. I actually put it in a local car yard and they sold it for me on consignment, and their commission of course from the $9,000 sale, and I received $8,000. It was the best we could do. Then the Cobra was resold in about late 1982/83 with approximately 45,000kms to Frank Sola. I did contact him in 2023 as I always wondered what ever happen to Cobra No.222 as I never saw it again. He told me he sold it back in 1988 to a Chinese student from Sydney and within three months he wrapped it around a tree and totalled it. I have no idea what happened to the car apart from, it was stripped of all its parts, the rear window went into Cobra No.320 that he rebuilt. So sad, but true, unfortunately. Also installed a big harness plug on the firewall to make engine swap outs quick and easy. Have you ever been bitten by a Cobra? “I purchased Cobra Build No.386 (SA Reg SDD-812) from B S Stilwell Ford (the salesman was King Hoff) in September 1978. She was a 302 (4.9) with automatic transmission, air-conditioned, power steering and electric windows. Drove it home to Renmark from their Medindie showroom. The original motor was slightly work with a warm cam, extractors, inlet manifold and Holley carb. Transmission receives a 3,500 stall torque converter, trick kit and a B&M Star shifter neatly fitted the console. Extras that were also added was the electronic boot release and hinged rear external louvres, the latter fitted by Gower Ford in Renmark. A 2-into-1 electric CB/radio aerial replaced the original lock down car radio aerial at its first service. She was fitted with 8”Aunger hotwires and Bridgestones while I owned her, which did improved the handling, but she was traded back with the original Bathurst Globes and Dunlop Aquajets she came with. I was lucky enough to find an Allan Moffat factory signed MOMO Prototipo steering wheel in 1979 at Aungers in Adelaide, which is all I still have to remind me of Cobra # 386. It would be nice to know how many of those steering wheels were made, I’m sure it was to commemorate the ’77 Bathurst win. Either way it suited the Cobra well. I traded the Cobra back in at Stilwell Ford on a XE GL Falcon Ute in 1986. It will great to know how 386 is going, like most previous owners of these cars they were (and still are) a part of the family. Would love to know if she’s still around.
