This place, imma keep quite. Was one of the best free camps I've experienced. So much space, so few campers. Takes a little bit of dirt road driving to get to but once you're there it's an absolutely amazing hideaway. Can swim, can fish, can kayak, can boat. Somewhere between Biloela and Rockhampton. Junction Park in Theodore is a fantastic spot to stop if you love fishing. Have a swim if you want but the stories I've heard it's far enough north to encounter the occasional croc. Didn't stop me though. Our unexpected, enforced stay in Darlington Point gave us a chance to really look around this little town (?), hamlet(?), blip on the map(?). The entire town comprises a pub, post office, council chambers, chemist, cultural centre, butcher, and Cafe- oh and a caravan park - which is pumping!! It has to be because of the fishing on the Murrumbidgee River - which winds through and around the town. Our walks along the river were magic. We did wonder why so many people were crowded into the caravan park and so few were camping in the shade of the magnificent River Red Gums, surrounded by birdsong, on one of the many, many bends of this beautiful, tranquil river. Photos in order: 1. Breakfast in Doris - coz we can 🙂 2. Patterson's curse - looking like an Australian version of bluebells in the forest. It's called Patterson's curse because, allegedly, Mrs Patterson introduced the plant in the 1880's because she wanted it for her garden. It quickly naturalised and is now considered a noxious weed. It is toxic to stock and suppresses native vegetation. 3. Aboriginal Scar Tree. Aboriginal Scar trees mark sites of significance to Aboriginal people such as initiation or burial sites. Tree carvings can be found dotted throughout Australia, but are mainly of NSW origin--specifically the work of Gamilaroi and Wiradjuri people. The scars, which vary in size, expose the sapwood on the trunk or branch of a tree. The bark removed was traditionally used to build canoes, coolamons, shields and shelter. 4. Beautiful bark on a River Red Gum. 5. "She'll be right..... oops" 6. The free camps are even signposted 7. A Bunyip track?? 8. A bend in the river 9. The old drawbridge mechanism. Back in the day, the bridge had to be raised to allow punts to cross the river. 10. Punt Hotel, Darlington Point
