NOT ALL AWARENESS IS POSITIVE! This post covers the three types of Autism-related content that I have seen or been recommended on the internet. The most common category of videos that I see are for entertainment purposes. These videos never identify real Autism-related experiences and instead focus on symptoms caused by one of the many other disorders that I listed. These niche symptoms are always phrased to make the reader believe that what they are saying is a fact for every Autistic and if you experience said symptoms, it means you're Autistic. This trend is the root cause of the rise of "self-diagnosed Autistics" and people claiming that everyone with Autism has it equally as severe; so, severe Autism (level 3) isn't real. The misinformation that has been spread through this content has really damaged the Autistic community. Some of the "Autism trends" or "sounds" that promote stereotyping and self-diagnosis are: "I have this thing... it's Autism" "This is what I call Autism dinner" "If you can do this, it means you have Autism" "This is how I know I'm Autistic" "POV: you're autistic/ your partner is Autistic" "My Autism made me do it" "Self-diagnosis is valid because..." "My doctor didn't diagnose me because I'm a girl/POC" "These are Autistic traits only found in girls" "I deserve to be rude/narcissistic because my life is so much harder than nuerotypicals" "I feel bad for nuerotypicals. Autism makes life interesting" "Autism is a superpower" And SO MANY MORE Because I so rarely see content that doesn't do these harmful things, I will share three Autism-centered Instagram accounts that promote helpful Autism awareness: Educational: @bohospeechie Avocational: @theautismcafe For Entertainment: @kaelynnvp Please be cautious when trying to get more educated about Autism; because, there are so many lies going around right now that defeat the purpose of Autism Awareness. I hope that soon these trends stop becoming popular; because, it is so odd for there to be trends about a debilitating disorder at all. #autism #awareness #autismawareness #educational #accessibleeducation #autismmemes #autismtrends #disabilities #advocacy #gracesguidetoeverything
