Occurring every May, Skin Cancer Awareness Month is devoted to shining the spotlight on the most common cancer in the United States — skin cancer. It’s estimated that every day about 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with this cancer. Thats 1 in 5 people! ☀️ There are multiple forms of skin cancer and some of the most important facts are that 90% of all skin cancers are preventable and if detected, diagnosed and treated early, almost all cases are curable! One form, Melanoma, occurs in melanocytes, which are skin cells that create pigment. It’s caused by gene changes inside melanocytes that cause the cells to become cancerous. Exposure to UV light and genetic factors play a role in its development. ☀️ While overall less common than basal and squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma is by far the most dangerous. It makes up about 1 % of skin cancers but is responsible for most skin cancer deaths. ☀️ Melanoma can start anywhere on your body, such as the chest, neck, legs, and face. It can also occur in areas that don’t typically receive exposure to the sun, such as fingernail beds, the palms of the hands, and the soles of the feet. Mucosal melanoma can also develop in mucus membranes lining the nose, mouth, and the digestive and urinary tracts. ☀️ Melanoma may first appear as changes to an existing mole or as a new mole. Melanoma can be suspected if a mole has any of the “ABCDE” characteristics: •Asymmetrical shape •Border irregularities •Color that isn’t consistent •Diameter larger than 6 millimeters •Evolving size or shape ☀️ While the sun is important to boost the body’s supply of Vitamin D, it’s also is optimal to only have sun exposure for 5 to 30 minutes a day, most days a week, without sunscreen. Much of the science in the longevity research space has been in animal models which, as we have seen, are challenging to translate to human outcomes. I think we can accelerate our learning by using human trials, and it’s much easier to do that with smart, tailored dietary and lifestyle interventions that are built on components that are time-tested for safety – foods, exercise, sleep, etc. Make no mistake, I am very excited about some of the more radical interventions being readied for human trials (Yamanaka factors, Sebastiano and others) but diet and lifestyle inputs are these unavoidable first steps. This patient presented to me on crutches 🩼 and unable to weight bear on the involved limb with an acute knee injury. I performed diagnostic testing that indicated a medial meniscus tear, MCL sprain and popliteus, hamstring and quadriceps strain. After three sessions of dry needling, cupping and manual therapy - THAT WEEK - the client was able to walk WITHOUT their crutches and with significantly less pain 🤯 . It has been amazing to witness the quick progress - she is now 1 month post injury & climbing stairs, strengthening and riding the bike and feeling good.
