Change is good 🌼 and scary And often necessary It’s been a little over three years since our first Language Café at @languagecafeaccra . The organization started just with me and my desire to practice Twi in a safe and fun space (mepaakyew, don’t ask me if I’m fluent now), and quickly turned into a serious concept with multiple languages (at some point nine!!!), Cafés in Accra and Kokrobite, our monthly potluck, cooking classes and of course @languagecafeghana_travel (you can book, for now only, our day trips as private day tours as well!) Some of these above went a bit down, but the spirit of @languagecafeaccra is still alive. My enthusiasm and passion is still there, it’s just sharing the position with raising my tiny human 🐯 Back to change… it’s scary because it feels like what you did before was not good. It was wrong And oh oh oh if there’s something I can’t stand it’s doing something wrong (whoever may decide what ‘wrong’ is) It took me some time to get bigger than my ego about this issue. Because I knew the Language Cafés were not functioning well anymore. Not because the idea is bad, but because I can’t put as much energy and effort in it as before I needed to change something to make it easier ⚠️ That’s why this week I announced from May onwards we will do bi-weekly Multi Languages Cafés where you can practice all languages and discuss languages and cultures in general Hopefully much easier for me to coordinate (less volunteers, less venues), and more F U N Is this the right path for my organization? It’s sometimes not easier to give up, sometimes it’s easier to stick to what you’re doing I just hope you won’t lose your joy and your hunger. Whatever you think your path should be leading too, I will be there to hold your hand (or watch you from distance, because your path can be where you think it should be). Friendships… One of the most difficult things in Ghana for me is finding friends. Social contacts. Deep connections. People you share more with then ‘we both live in Ghana’ or ‘we happen to be from the same country’ Lots of the people I know will only be here for weeks, months or, if I am lucky, years. Living here means learning how to get used to the fact that people will always leave. Not many will stay for super long. Sometimes the ones you don’t expect it from, will leave. Foreigners like myself and Ghanaians Opening up to (new) people has never been easy for me. I never had lots of friends in The Netherlands, was never part of a group of friends. Always felt alone in groups, felt like I didn’t belong there Extra factor since 2023: having a baby doesn’t help. Yes for meeting other parents it helps… never knew there were so many people with babies in Accra. But I still like the same things as before giving birth. It’s just that it feels like people think with a baby you never want to leave the house again. Well I do, I am just more flexible when it comes to arriving or leaving. Do invite me to your gatherings and parties, I will bring my cute +1 I hear you thinking: didn’t you start a social network organization and bring lots of people together? My number one advice to make new friends (not: meet new people! I meet lots of people): don’t start a social network organization. As the face of this network, everyone thinks I am super busy and no know so many people that I don’t want more friends. Well, I know many people. I sell a difficult product ❌ Selling an experience is not for the ones with the short breaths. It’s takes a looooong time to figure out what your target group likes, what they need, what they expect, how much they are willing to pay, what you want to offer And then when you have it all together, a partner backs out. Or screws up on you. Or prices increase drastically. Roads become too bad, it’s the wrong season or the place is not maintained like before Every time you put yourself together and start again. Look for the best itinerary, find the most comfortable but affordable hotels, improve on transportation, add little surprise here and there. All to show OTHERS this beautiful country and support people who are doing the work 🚀 Not for the ones with the short breathes. Not for the ones who want a fast way to become a millionaire. It’s trial and error. I sold my first tours (since June 2021) with 50ghs profit per person. Hoping my service was not too expensive Madness if I think about it now. Of course it’s not too expensive. What we offer is valuable and worth paying for. We curate the most exciting places, support grassroots NGOs, do everything for your comfort during the drive and at the destinations, take care of your food (also allergies and food preferences: it’s always possible), bring together a group of diverse and interesting people and make sure you’re safe and fine 💗 Feedback on our tours are so so good. People feel safe with us, we are on time, the food is good and various And we get paid for it. Sounds like the dream. Looks like we made it. Strengthen your energy That’s what I saw on a wall (meant as an advertisement) on our way back to Accra. And it did something to me It’s what traveling around Ghana does to me. There’s days in Accra that I don’t feel motivated to continue what I do. The struggle of finding dedicated people, cost of living going up so do the costs of my tours and events, venues not being clear about their prices, disappointments, issues around the house. There’s many reasons to give up But when I travel I strengthen my energy. I find my motivation again. The motivation to bring people together. To give people a good time in Ghana while also bringing other people an income When I travel through Ghana my reasons to do what I do finally become clear again. I do this to show people this beautiful and raw country. Not only the touristic highlights, it’s mostly the unknown (and difficult to ‘sell’) places people fall in love with It’s time to step up. Day One in Accra was nothing short of amazing! [part one in the previous post] For the first time in forever I am looking for plane tickets to Amsterdam. I am watching videos about my country. I am thinking of how life would be if I left here. Knowing it won’t be any better. Because it will be the same. The anxiety. Feeling I am not doing it right. Or not doing enough. My head is full of thoughts. Can barely get my thoughts clear. I am getting frustrated at people who don’t deserve it. I am making mistakes I normally don’t make. And you know, this shall pass. I have to respond to my mail box full of people who want to help me, so I can grow the organization instead of doing the ground work. I have to book more small vacations now and then. I have to save up money and maybe in a while I can go home for a break. I have to open my meditation app more often. I have to write that gym in my neighborhood, so I can get back to exercising maybe. It's a lot. And maybe you don’t follow me to hear me complain about how it is a lot to live here. Maybe you just want to hear how amazing it is. How I go to the beach all the time, and if not I will go to the mountains. But life is not like that. I choose a free life. I choose to be mainly dependent on myself. I choose a long-term life in Ghana. I had to make decisions for that, and these decisions come with consequences. Sometimes these are cool and make me happy, sometimes they make me insecure about the future. Is it so bad to admit I am not so happy lately? We are probably on this app to see the nice, happy faces and hear the amazing stories. But what if I am telling you I am not so positive and happy mood. Of course you would rather read how settled we are at the new apartment, how we get long term house mates (we do, actually), how joyful it is to live with the dog. And it’s not so far from the truth. Things go well. On paper everything goes well. My organization goes well. The feedback for Language Cafes, tours and other events has been amazing. I took jobs for a few hours a week, so I have a more stable income. Our spare rooms are both booked for at least the coming three months. Not on paper, everything is wrong. I am experiencing anxiety. I feel like at any moment I can lose everything and have to start again. Any small thing that doesn’t go right makes me burst into tears. I spend days in bed crying. Thinking about what I am doing wrong, while nothing shows I am doing something wrong. My head is full of all the questions I get, of all the people in the tourist industry who want me to bring people and of all the expectations I have for myself doing it all right. When I open my Whatsapp, I just hope there’s no message to respond to. It took a while, but I got to a point where I question if I should stay here… or go Is this the “living abroad” burn out, an existential crisis or do I just have to accept I am lower in energy and I will get my passion back At this point I honestly don’t know. It’s either very very soon I have to add people to the LCA team, or I might not be able to handle it anymore Organizing things is exhausting. Keeping the energy high is exhausting. Dealing with everyone’s opinion is exhausting. Dealing with people who just say what they think (without meaning), is exhausting It got in my brain and I haven’t been able to let it out for a while. It keeps piling up. I can’t let it go I am trying to please everyone. Making everyone’s time in Accra/Ghana great, but what do I do for myself?
