Day 10 - part 1: Lamu I woke up just a few minutes late to watch the sunrise on my rooftop terrace. It was still nice to be above the humid city and have a little breeze which made me feel like a proper human and not like a sweaty something. After my first of 5 showers this day and went to a lovely little cafe in the backyard of the vibrant town. To be completely honest with you: the location was nice but the fruits I ordered for breakfast were already rotted. So I wouldn't recommend that place. After exploring the beauty of the UNESCO world heritage town and trying not to step in donkey poo I tried to escape the unbearable heat by visiting the museum of Lamu, where I learned about the Shwahili culture. During midday it got way to hot for me so I jumped on a boda boda (motorbike taxi) and went off to the beach of Lamu island. Sheala is the place to be for that. Unfortunately there is no shade at the beach, so I got into one of the fancy and more posh hotels, grabbed some lunch to be able to use their facilities and finally to cool off in the ocean. The pepino hotel was the lovely hotel I got delicious cashew hummus and shade. Day 8 - part 2: Milindi and Vasco de Gama In Milindi the driver dropped me near the Vasco da Gama Pillar. He wanted an extra 200 Schilling for that but I said enough is enough and jumped off. There was an entry fee of 500 Schilling to see the pillar which seemed too much for not even a beautifully decorated pillar. So I went to the beach, jumped a few fences and walked in the ocean water for a bit and got to the pillar for free. It's overrated but still cool to see the pillar which was erected in 1498 by Vasco da Gama as a navigational aid. Since Malindi is home to many Italians whom have settled there since the 1970s, Malindi is known for the terrific Italian food. I went to the baby marrow restaurant which was recommended to me as the best restaurant in the entire country. To my disappointment it was closed. Day 7: Kilifi/Distant Relatives After the big day of exploring yesterday I decided to get the best use of my lovely hostel. Since it is just a 5min walk to the creeks beach I had a look there but decided the pool looks much nicer. So I went for a swim or better a quick cool down and tried to fix my tan. On day 8 of my east Africa journey I went to Marafa Depression or hell's kitchen and let me tell you it was toasty in there. Up to 50 degrees and almost no shade 🥵 but it was definitely worth it. Sierra Leone, Tag 7. Heute mit einer total spannenden Begegnung. Ich durfte Hannah kennenlernen, Gründerin und CEO von @_coffee_couriers_ . Angefangen hat alles vor über 10 Jahren mit der Idee, Kaffee in verschiedene Büros in Freetown zu liefern. Dann kam die Ebola-Epidemie dazwischen. Ein neues Geschäftsmodell musste her und Hannah verkauft nun Kaffeebohnen, gemahlenen Kaffee und Kaffee mit Ingwergeschmack an Hotels, Touristen etc. Sogar der Export nach Italien ist schon einmal gelungen und wer weiß, vielleicht klappt es ja bald mit dem Export im größeren Stil. Day 6 - part 1: Gede Ruins I had a slow morning with breakfast overlooking a rainforest. And finally washed my clothes which were smelling quite badly from the rainwater. Packed my stuff for the day, applied lots of sunscreen and hopped on a motorbike to drive to Kilifis matutu station. There I hopped on a matutu to Milindi. It happened to be a very aggressive money collector so I didn't haggle the price down. Karma got that guy when in the middle of the ride the door fell out haha. I got off in Gede where I walked for a couple of minutes to the entrance of Gede ruins. There I got attacked by an angry monkey who jumped on my head. ☺️🐒 The tickets to enter the ruins where sold via empesa only which is a only payment form widely used in Kenya, maybe similar to apple pay. Of course I only had cash or card which was not accepted. So I paid an additional 30cent to a local to do the transaction for me. At the ruins I was the only one and they are located in a junglely setting which made me feel like Indiana Jones. Unlike him I didn't find any hidden treasures. But I did explore and appreciate the old medieval Shwahili town. Direkt nach dem 2 km-Trainingslauf. Wir schwitzen mehr, als man eigentlich trinken kann. Die Veranstalter raten, nicht zu viel Bier am Abend vor dem Lauf zu trinken. Tiwai Island. Verstecktes Idyll im Hinterland. Heimat von Nashornvögeln und von Zwergnilpferden. Letztere haben wir leider nicht erspäht, dafür Schmetterlinge in 17 verschiedenen Farben, weiß, leuchtblau, dunkelblau, zartblau, braun, gesprenkelt..... Überall gibt es Mangos. @eva.spatz hat gleich 7 Kilo gekauft und dazu eine riesige Wassermelone. Es ist unfassbar schwül. Morgen 38 Grad. Die Luftfeuchtigkeit geht bis zu 96 Prozent. Noch 5 Tage bis zum Halbmarathon. Das kann ja was werden, bei dem Wetter.... Day 3: Travel day from Diani to Wasini Island It was not only the first travel day but also the first proper rainy season rain. The rain started at night and was bucketing down. When I ran to the bathroom early morning my clothes got completely soaked. Since it was a travel day I wasn't mad about rain. Packed my stuff, grabbed a rather quick brekkie and hopped on a tuktuk to the matutu (minibus) station. From where I took a matutu to a town called Shimoni. I got lucky cuz I was the last person to fill up the matutu which meant we left immediately after I got on the bus. You should know that matutus don't have a fixed schedule. They leave when full. And full means packed. In Shimoni I hopped on a tuktuk and used my new rainponcho for the very first time. Such a ridiculous looking but very handy thing to have. At the little port my host welcomed me and carried my backpack to a boat called Özil. Since the island of Wasini usually doesn't have tourist as overnight guest, accommodation is limited and VERY basic. The place I stayed at just recently got electricity, which doesn't mean it's actually working. The whole island depends on rain water, which was running at one tap only. So there was no proper shower, just a bucket full of rainwater and the toilet flush was not working either. Well it's an adventure if you stay in super remote places. Also the phone signal was minimal to not existing. Wasini Island is tiny, just 5km long and 3km wide. Everything is in walking distance so there is no need for cars. And honestly no space for them either. After the sky cleared up I went to explore the island. Everyone was super friendly and greeted me with a welcoming 'Jambo', kids were giggling and waving at me as they saw me. The island itself looks partly abounded or forgotten. My host later told me that COVID hit the island badly. The few tourist things got closed for good and furniture etc was just left behind. Since the island isn't used to host tourist the one existing restaurant isn't open after lunch time. So I had dinner at a little food stall with 10 locals watching whatever the only TV in the island gave us. #wasini #wasiniisland #kenya #backpackingafrica

Sierra Leone, Tag 1. Freetown. Independence Day. Zeit für Fußball. Unsere Jungs von den East End Lions, auch The Killers genannt, mussten sich mit einem 1:1 gegen die Port Authority begnügen. Schuld war der Schiedsrichter, der folgerichtig mit Militärschutz vom Platz geführt wurde. Fußball am Strand von Lumley ist dann etwas entspannter. Ebenso abends dort gegrillten Fisch zu essen, der leckere Snapper ist jetzt nicht auf den Bildern zu sehen🐟🐟🐟. Day 2 - part 1: African Pool/Tiwi Beach During breakfast I met an Italian guy (with amazing eyes). Is there anything more to say or do you already know I had an amazing day?! Well, we hopped on a tuktuk and drove an hour or so to Tiwi beach. To be more specific, to African pool. Any guesses why this place is called African pool? Of course because it's naturally shaped like Africa (first pic). To get there it's a short but very steep climb. So better bring water shoes or similar. I went with my havaiana espandrilles (3rd pic). They were also very practical for walking around without cutting my feet on shells or sea urchin (2nd pic). I saw lots of little wildlife, like tiny crabs (4th pic) and colourful fishes. I even dived to Madagascar, which is a smaller and warmer pool. It is such a unique place without any tourists. We spent a couple of hours there and had the pool to ourselves or shared with a few locals. Getting there was uncomfortable due to the rough road conditions (last pic) but definitely worth it. Day 1: Diani Beach, Kenya I arrived early early morning (even before sunrise) in hot and humid Mombasa. Since it was this early and after a very long over night flight (even with 2 seats for myself I didn't sleep well) I decided to tried myself with a taxi drive to my hostel in Diani Beach. We crossed the river on a huge ferry, where I watched the sun rise (1st pic). I slept the rest of the drive. At the hostel I got extra lucky to be able to check into the room already. So I was able to have another nap in a proper bed instead of a daybed. My sleeping pills were still kicking in. Took my first of properly many cold showers, had scrambled eggs for brekkie and head off by tuktuk (2nd pic) to take a local SIM card. Later on I met up at a beach club with my new friends from the hostel. First day at Cape Maclear We were staying in Warm Heart Adventure Lodge, which is right on the shore of Lake Malawi. When we went to take a dip in the lake, we were greeted by the kids who were practicing their swimming skills. Siwa Oasi 📍 🌴 L'Oasi di Siwa è una delle oasi desertiche più isolate dell'Egitto. Si trova vicino al confine con la Libia. Più a sud c'è solo il deserto fino a raggiungere le giungle dell'Africa centrale. 🚙 In un certo senso, Siwa sembra la fine del mondo poiché per arrivarci ti dovrai immergere in un lungo viaggio infernale di circa 9 ore in macchina dal Cairo. Ma ne vale assolutamente la pena. Una esperienza completamente diversa dal Cairo e Luxor. Non ci sono né piramidi e templi, ma c'è un sacco di bellezze naturali da esplorare insieme ad alcuni siti antichi: in zero due, da un mare di sabbia, il paesaggio si trasforma in un mare di palme, tutto ciò nello stesso luogo. Ci sono oltre 300 sorgenti di acqua limpida, sorgenti termali e piscine di sale. Best places to travel to in just over 3 hours from London…nothing can beat Morocco for the difference in culture and being on a separate continent quicker than you can get to most of the Greek islands. Marrakech has been a favourite of mine for some time. It might be a popular destination but you will find yourself in a different vibe to anywhere else in Europe. But the city is also a great base to discover the Sahara desert, the highest mountain range in North Africa, waterfalls and even the Atlantic coast. Despite the high levels of tourism the city still has a tonne of history and authenticity to offer. Walking around the souks, visiting the night markets and having copious amounts of mint tea and local food is a great combo and is why Marrakech is still a great introduction to Morocco and North African culture. I need to get back, but next time to explore the north including Fez and Chefchaouen and the cool rail system that links the region up with the likes of Casablanca. African babies Well, the first thing you notice is that they rarely cry. On 10h bus rides or squeezed in ovepacked car, even I am crying inside secretly, but these babies are silent, sleeping peacefully during most of the ride. You can see how their mamas hold them in the air by one hand, flipping them on their backs and wrapping them to themselves. They are carried throughout the day, wrapped tightly on their mums back while they work. African babies are also used to be held by strangers. They don't complain. Instagram vs reality (🩸warning‼️⛔️) swipe for some funny moments when… A Kenyan hammock tried to murder me I met a grumpy Ugandan cat I learnt that water resistant is different than water proof I went swimming with whalesharks (first swims hand in hand with the guide 😆) I got stuck in a Tanzanian chair, or maybe the chair got stuck with me… I was trying to sleep on the 13th vechile on my 46h long transfer from RWA to TZ (after driving over a cow by an oil truck 🐮🆘) I found the food that I enjoyed the most during my trip (huuge 🥑) My face after a sunny but succesfull last surfing session 🍅 I tried to sleep through one of the many African massages 🚐 + forgot add a picture of me enjoying countless of passion juices and coffee shakes 😆 #backpackingafrica

A little recap from my 5 month long solo backpacking trip 🌍 Here are some memories on top of my mind from each country. 🇾🇪 Pic 2 (by @offtrackroza): starting the trip solid by landing on the most incredible island on this earth, Socotra which unique collection of nature keeps probably amazing me the rest of my life. 🇰🇪 Pic 3: having the best safari of my life and getting the altitude sickness when climbing to Mt Kenya. 🇺🇬 Pic 4: surely the coolest encounter of my life with a gorilla family in breathtaking Uganda. The landscapes in this country are dreamy. 🇷🇼 Pic 5: doing amazing hikes and thinking about the connections between history and today in small but memorable Rwanda. Learnt also that a waterproof is a must when the rain hits rainforest. 🇹🇿 Pic 6: relaxing on Mafia Island and swimming with whale sharks, swimming with dolpins on Zanzibar and got a food poisoning in Tanzania together with @haavistoella. 🇲🇼 Pic 7: switched sunshine to rain again in always so cute Malawi and enjoyed its beautiful nature, new travel buddies and handicraft workshops. 🇲🇿 Pic 8: my dream came true when traveling to stunning Mozambique where I used my time to enjoy the endless empty beaches and surfing. 🇿🇲 Pic 9: i felt almost like home being back in Zambia at the best hosts’ @sara.mtonga & @lemekani_mtonga got witness the beautiful wedding of these two. 🇳🇦 Pic 10: no better way to end my adventure than a proper roadtrip with the best friends @ooonailona @haavistoella @sarakaarin in Namibia. Mushroom Farm 🍄 We didn't realize how famous this place is among the backpackers in Malawi. We thought we found a hidden gem, but it's not so hidden after all. Nevertheless, this iconic place is a MUST VISIT if you are backpacking through Malawi. We were camping there with possibly the best view we ever had #camping, but they also have a bunch of different accommodation options. Our favorite spot was the shower with the view 😍 PS: this place is high in the mountains, the road leading there is quite extreme - 40 minutes uphill on the motorbike, will cost you not only 9000 kw but also a lot of nerves 😅 but I guess you can see it's worth it ! #mushroomfarm #malawi #backpackingafrica #cairotocapetown
