Back in Baja briefly!! Since I last posted I went back up North again to a tiny town called Behcheko. It was way too soon after the evacuation so it was quite hard going back into the fire zone. Got back to my little piece of Paradise on Monday and promptly came down with some flu-like illness! It’s been a long time since I got sick but I’m not surprised- too much traveling, too much work stress, not eating well, not enough exercise,too little sleep and then crowded plane flights! Our second year into nomadic life is looking a bit different than the first. During our first 12 months, we did 3 major routes on mostly dirt roads crossing the US from east to west, north to south and then down and up the Baja peninsula. It was a rollercoaster of mountains, plains and dunes, with constantly evolving landscape out our dusty Jeep windows. We had those first 12 months roughly planned out in our minds ahead of leaving. Beyond that, who knew. When we arrived in Baja, it was instantly clear that this was a place we wanted get to know more than just for a week or month. But we were also feeling ready for a reset. And it was time to focus on work again which for us meant learning how to be owners of a small business we had purchased along our travels. We needed a basecamp for a while and though we weren’t expecting it, all signs indicated Baja was our place. Our Baja basecamp is on the private property of a dear friend and we are so grateful for the opportunity we’ve been given to be here. The location is one of the last stops beyond town that is still somewhat close but feels very remote. As you can see in the photos, this is a work in progress but we have built the deck and structure ourselves with our limited to no construction experience. The setup we currently have consists of a 20’ Lotus Belle tent and an outdoor kitchen with a sleeping loft above. We plan to build out countertops in the kitchen, we set up our additional 16’ Lotus Belle, and build a bathroom and storage shed using the same type of materials we used for the kitchen. When the Jeep and trailer are parked and used here, it feels like the basecamp is their docking station.
