Check out these surfboards of the ‘Inshalla’ series crafted by artist @phillipgeorge1981 . These boards were inspired by geometric art from mosques around the world in an attempt to foster cross-cultural discussions and peace following the 2005 Australian Cronulla Race Riots. The Cronulla race riots started when a gathering of Anglo-Australians attempted to ‘reclaim the beach from outsiders’. They targeted people who looked of Middle Eastern descent. One of the slogans chanted during the gathering was ‘We grew here, you flew here.’ Violence and two days of rioting ensued. Surf and beach culture has grown throughout the world, now with Islamic countries from Indonesia to Morocco to Senegal evolving their own beach cultures, attracting people from around the world. Time for a little Redondo Beach History! Ever wonder about the sculpture that greets you as you enter the pier? The bust commemorates George Freeth who is credited with bringing surfing from Hawaii to Redondo Beach in 1907. Freeth was one of the first to establish lifeguarding and won a Congressional Gold Medal for saving seven fishermen after a boat wreck in 1908.
