As I Am, Day 3 One Wave At A Time This is one of my eyes. The dream of learning to surf for me began as a kid growing up in landlocked Denver, Colorado, and like most kids I believe wanting to be anywhere other than where I was. I left home in Denver and moved to California at age 17 because I was a feral animal and it was just plain safer being 900 miles away from home. My goal was to be a toy designer, an artist, a writer, an anything…. What I hadn’t calculated into these plans was having to feed myself on the streets of LA. The experience was an eye opener. Also, I wasn’t expecting the emotional explosion of seeing the Pacific Ocean for the first time. Sleeping on the beach near the Santa Monica pier with my new friends from Sunset Strip. Both eyes were now wide open. I lasted six months and scurried back to Colorado with my tail between my legs. Regrouped and returned to California a year later. The ocean had captured me. But I never learned to surf. Life got in the way ~ and truthfully I never believed I could do it… Now at 65 my eyes are still wide open. A little too much actually. With Parkinson’s my eyes stay plastered open and I have to think to blink. My peripheral vision has decreased by 20% and the prescription for my right eye is changing regularly at too fast a pace. Mavericks is about an hour drive north of my hometown Santa Cruz. Kind of the big wave Mecca for local surfers here in the area. Growing up, my alarm clock was the buoy weather radio because my life revolved around surfing. This particular day was the biggest of the winter of 2020. Only three surfers in the water at the time with about 20 suiting up. It was time to catch one, so I flipped and went on a ramp that looked approachable. It’s not often there is a window where no one wants a piece of the Mavs bowl. This wave had a little chip on the top of it, so I flipped and went. The swell was very long period, so the wave was moving fast. It seemed to pass me by like I was standing still even though I paddled as hard as I could into it. I managed a little hover before touching down and riding out of it. I made the wave and headed back out, only it was getting more crowded and the waves started breaking way out in places I’ve never seen; and I’ve been out there for 25 years now. I started to get the feeling of being stalked when I’m there to be a predator so I felt like it was a good time to call it a day. Great time to start towing at that point and there were some great waves ridden. The following year I bought a ski lol! Now that’s Aclassic!
