Royal Swedish Opera is an opera and ballet company based in Stockholm, Sweden. The building is located in the center of Sweden's capital Stockholm in the borough of Norrmalm, on the eastern side of Gustav Adolfs torg across from the former Arvfurstens Palats, now Ministry for Foreign Affairs. It lies on the north side of the Norrström river and is connected to the Royal Palace through the Norrbro bridge. Further historically as well as architecturally important buildings in the close neighborhood are the Sager House, official residence of the Prime Minister of Sweden, and the Riksdag building. The opera company was founded with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music by King Gustav III and its first performance, Thetis and Phelée with Carl Stenborg and Elisabeth Olin, was given on 18 January 1773; this was the first native speaking opera performed in Sweden. But the first opera house was not opened until 1782 and served for a century before being replaced at the end of the 19th century. Both houses are officially called the "Royal Opera", however the terms "The Gustavian Opera" and "The Oscarian Opera", or the "Old" and "New" Opera are used when distinction is needed. #internationalvagabond #beautifulsweden #beautifulsweden #exploresweden #discoversweden #destinationsweden #travelsweden #beautifuloslo #travelstockholm #destinationstockholm #explorestockholm #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #royalswedishopera #royalswedishoperahouse #gamlastan #gamlastanstockholm

Saint James's Church is a church in central Stockholm, Sweden, dedicated to apostle Saint James the Greater, patron saint of travellers. It is often mistakenly called St Jacob's. The confusion arises because Swedish, like many other languages, uses the same name for both James and Jacob. Arguably the most central church in the Swedish capital, surrounded by the popular park Kungsträdgården, the Royal Opera, the square Gustav Adolfs torg; and near Sergels torg, the Royal Palace, and governmental office Rosenbad, the parish of the church was limited to 150 souls in the late 1980s, and was thus merged into the parish of the Stockholm Cathedral in 1989. A bust of Swedish tenor Jussi Björling (1911-1960) stands outside. The church took a long time to complete. As a consequence it includes a wide range of architectural styles, such as Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The building is based on the design of multiple architects over the centuries: Willem Boy (1580–93), Hans Ferster (1635–43), Göran Joshuae Adelcrantz and Carl Hårleman (1723–35), Carl Möller and Agi Lindegren (1893–94). #internationalvagabond #beautifulsweden #beautifulsweden #exploresweden #discoversweden #destinationsweden #travelsweden #beautifuloslo #travelstockholm #destinationstockholm #explorestockholm #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #saintjameschurch #saintjames #gamlastan #gamlastanstockholm

Frogner Park is a public park in the central West End borough of Frogner in Oslo, Norway. The park is historically part of Frogner Manor and is Oslo's largest park, open to the public at all times. It includes the manor house which is the seat of Oslo Museum, the nearby Henriette Wegner Pavilion, the Vigeland installation of sculptures created by sculptor Gustav Vigeland, Frogner Baths, Frogner stadion, Frognerparken Café, the restaurant Herregårdskroen and the largest collection of roses in the country with 14,000 plants of 150 species. Frogner Manor was historically one of the largest estates in the modern Oslo area. Both the park, the entire borough of Frogner as well as Frognerseteren derive their names from Frogner Manor. The manor house is located in the south of the park, and houses Oslo Museum, which opened there in 1909. The nearby Henriette Wegner Pavilion was moved from Blaafarveværket in the 1830s. Frogner Park was gradually opened as a public park from 1904 and the 1914 Jubilee Exhibition was held there. From 1924, Gustav Vigeland's sculpture installation was built in parts of Frogner Park. It consists of sculptures as well as larger structures such as bridges and fountains. The installation is not a separate park, but the name of the sculptures within the larger Frogner Park. Informally the Vigeland installation is sometimes called "Vigeland Park" or "Vigeland Sculpture Park"; the director of Oslo Museum Lars Roede said "Vigeland Park" "doesn't really exist" and is "the name of the tourists," as opposed to "Oslo natives' more down-to-earth name, Frogner Park." Frogner Park is the largest park in the city and covers 45 hectares; the sculpture installation is the world's largest sculpture park made by a single artist. Frogner Park and the Vigeland installation was protected under the Heritage Act on 13 February 2009 as the first park in Norway. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslofjord #sculpturesofoslo #frognerparken

Cold water baths in the frozen Oslo sea ... I have read before that going from a hot to cold shower — even for a couple of minutes — might protect you from circulating viruses. The shock of cold water can stimulate the blood cells that fight off infection (leukocytes), decrease depression symptoms, improve blood circulation, increase metabolism, reduce inflammation and reduce localized pain... So will you jump into the freezing cold waters of Oslo harbor next time you visit it in February??? #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslofjord #coldshowerchallenge #coldshowers #coldshowerbenefits

The “Sun and Earth” statue by Ørnulf Bast has stood on top a fountain in Christian Frederiks plass since 1986. Historically, this location was the garden of Paléet. The former royal residence was constructed in 1745 and destroyed by fire in 1942. In 1914, the square was named after Christian Frederick. He was the King of Norway for less than five months in 1814 when Norway declared their short-lived independence from Denmark. He then transferred his power to the Storting (Norway’s new parliament). The politicians negotiated a union with Sweden and elected Charles XIII of Sweden as their new king. Christian Frederick returned to Denmark and later became the Danish King Christian VIII from 1839 until 1848. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslofjord #sunandearth #ørnulf #christianfrederiksplass

The Oslo Opera House is the home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and the national opera house in Norway. The building is situated in the Bjørvika neighbourhood of central Oslo, at the head of the Oslofjord. It is operated by Statsbygg, the government agency which manages property for the Norwegian government. The structure contains 1,100 rooms in a total area of 49,000 m2 (530,000 sq ft). The main auditorium seats 1,364 and two other performance spaces can seat 200 and 400. The main stage is 16 m (52 ft) wide and 40 m (130 ft) deep. The angled exterior surfaces of the building are covered with marble from Carrara, Italy and white granite and make it appear to rise from the water. It is the largest cultural building constructed in Norway since Nidarosdomen was completed circa 1300. In 1999, after a long national debate, the Norwegian legislature decided to construct a new opera house in the city. A design competition was held and, of the 350 entries received, the judges chose that of the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta. Construction started in 2003 and was completed in 2007, ahead of schedule. The gala opening on 12 April 2008 was attended by His Majesty King Harald, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and President Tarja Halonen of Finland and other leaders. During the first year of operation, 1.3 million people passed through the building's doors. The Opera House won the culture award at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona in October 2008 and the 2009 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslofjord #oslooperahouse #nationaloperahouse #snøhetta

She Lies is a public sculpture by Monica Bonvicini made of stainless steel and glass panels, measuring approximately 12 metres (39 ft) by 17 metres (56 ft) by 16 metres (52 ft), next to the Oslo Opera House in Norway. It is a permanent installation, floating on the water in the fjord on a concrete platform, rising 12 metres (39 ft) above the water surface. The sculpture turns on its axis in line with the tide and wind, offering changing experiences through reflections from the water and its transparent surfaces. The sculpture was made by Bonvicini as a three-dimensional interpretation of Caspar David Friedrich's painting The Sea of Ice (Das Eismeer) (1823–1824). The massive mound of ice depicted acts as a symbol of power in the region. Bonvicini won an international competition in 2007 for She Lies. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslofjord #shelies #monica bonvicini #caspardavidfriedrich #theseaofice

Akershus Fortress aka Akershus Castle Akershus Fortress/castle is a medieval castle in the Norwegian capital Oslo that was built in 1290 to protect and provide a royal residence for the city. Since the Middle Ages the fortress has been the namesake and centre of the main fief and later main county of Akershus, which was originally one of Norway's four main regions and which included most of Eastern Norway. The fortress itself was located within the Akershus main county until 1919, and also within the smaller Akershus sub county until 1842. The castle has also been used as a military base, a prison and is currently the temporary office of the prime minister of Norway. It is not known exactly when the construction of the castle started but it is believed that it took place around the late 1290s, by King Haakon V, replacing Tønsberg as one of the two most important Norwegian castles of the period (the other being Båhus). It was constructed in response to the Norwegian nobleman, Earl Alv Erlingsson of Sarpsborg's earlier attack on Oslo that occurred in 1287. In the aftermath of the attack, it became clear that the city's existing defences weren't effective and therefore, a stronger defensive centre was needed. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslofjord #akershuscastle #akershuscastleandfortress #haakonV

Statue of Franklin D. Roosevelt at sentrum Oslo.. Toward the end of the second world war, resistance activity crescendoed, a thriving underground industry cranked out a crude arsenal of homemade weapons. Communiques were hidden in loaves of bread, heels of shoes, and tins of spam. A home force of 40,000 troops was outfitted by air drops. Finally, in May of 1945, the heroic soldiers of the Norwegian resistance were greeted by a grateful public. Peter Tordenskjold was a prominent Danish-Norwegian Vice-Admiral at just 29 years old..and won a major battle by destroying the supply fleet to the King of Sweden. This lifesized (or slightly larger) bronze sculpture of Peter Tordenskjold is located in Radhusplassen in Oslo. It depicts a young man (he died at age 29!) standing in military garb next to a cannon. He holds the hilt of a sword in his right hand while holding the sword's tip in his left. He looks into the distance to his left. The work is by Axel Elder and is dated 1901.It is set on an elaborate plinth about 10 feet tall with a crest in bronze on the front..and "Tordenskjold" on a bronze plate below the crest. "Peter Jansen Wessel Tordenskiold (October 28, 1690 – November 12, 1720), commonly referred to as Tordenskjold (lit. Thunder Shield), was a Norwegian nobleman and an eminent naval flag officer in the service of the Royal Dano-Norwegian Navy. He rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral for his services in the Great Northern War. Born in Trondheim, Peter Wessel travelled to Copenhagen in 1704, and was employed in the navy. He won a name for himself through audacity and courage, and was ennobled as Peter Tordenskiold by King Frederick IV in 1716. His greatest exploit came later that year, as he destroyed the supply fleet of Charles XII of Sweden at the Battle of Dynekilen. In 1720, he was killed in a duel. In Denmark and Norway he is among the most famous national naval heroes. He experienced an unusually rapid rise in rank and died when he was only 29 years old." #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslofjord #petertordenskjold

Anchor Blucher Cruise This anchor was once part of the German cruiser Blücher, which was sunk in 1940.Blucher was the second of 5 Admiral Hipper class heavy cruisers. Laid down in 1936, launched 1937, completed in September 1939 and declared operational on 5 April 1940. Three days later, having embarked troops she sailed as the head of a task group in the invasion of Norway. Their task was to seize Oslo and Blucher lead the task group into Oslofjord where they were engaged by Norwegian defences on the fortress Oscarborg. The 11 inch guns in the fortress scored several hits, as did smaller calibre guns in other batteries. She was then hit by two torpedoes from a hidden site on Oscarborg which caused a major fire and the resulting explosions in magazines and fuel bunkers caused her to capsize with major loss of life. The sinking of Blucher caused the Germans to withdraw temporarily and this allowed the Norwegian Royal Family, National Government and the country's Gold Reserves to escape Oslo. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #blücheranchor #2ndworldwar #blücher

Oslo City Hall is a municipal building in Oslo, the capital of Norway. It houses the city council, the city's administration and various other municipal organisations. The building as it stands today was constructed between 1931 and 1950, with an interruption during the Second World War. It was designed by architects Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson. The building is located in the city center, in the northern part of the Pipervika neighbourhood, and it faces Oslofjord. Oslo City Hall is built of red brick and has two towers, one 63 meters tall and other 66 meters tall. The bricks used are larger than what was typical at the time of construction, but are roughly the same size as bricks used in the Middle Ages. The bricks, measuring approximately 27.5 × 13 × 8.5 cm, were produced by Hovin Teglverk in Oslo. The eastern tower has a carillon set of 49 bells. On December 10 (anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death) each year, Oslo City Hall hosts the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in which the annual laureate gives a lecture and is awarded the medal and diploma. A podium for the laureate and the Nobel Committee is erected in the far end of the hall for each ceremony. The Norwegian royal family and prime minister are attendants. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #oslocityhall #arnsteinarneberg #magnuspoulsson #nobelprizeceremony #oslofjord

The National Theatre in Oslo is one of Norway's largest and most prominent venues for performance of dramatic arts. It was designed by architect Henrik Bull (1864–1953). The theatre had its first performance on 1 September 1899 but can trace its origins to Christiania Theatre, which was founded in 1829. There were three official opening performances, on subsequent days in September: first, selected pieces by Ludvig Holberg, then An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen, and on the third day Sigurd Jorsalfar by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. National Theatre was founded as a private institution and weathered several financial crises until 1929, when the Norwegian government started providing modest support. A number of famous Norwegians have served as artistic directors for the theatre, but Vilhelm Krag who took over in 1911, is credited as having brought the theatre into its "golden age". The theatre is often considered the home for Ibsen's plays, and most of his works have been performed here. Notable is also the children's Christmas play Journey to the Christmas Star written by the theatre's finance director Sverre Brandt (1880–1962) and performed for the first time in 1924. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #nationaltheatre #henrikbull #ibsenhuset

The Royal Palace in Oslo was built in the first half of the 19th century as the Norwegian residence of the French-born King Charles III John, who reigned as king of Norway and Sweden. The palace is the official residence of the current Norwegian monarch while the Crown Prince resides at Skaugum in Asker west of Oslo. Charles John chose the site for the permanent royal palace on the western side of Christiania in 1821 and commissioned the officer and inexperienced architect, Danish-born Hans Linstow, to design the building. The Parliament approved the stipulated cost of 150 000 speciedaler to be financed by the sale of government bonds. Work on the site started in 1824, and on 1 October 1825 Charles John laid down the foundation stone beneath the altar of the future palace chapel. Linstow originally planned a building of only two storeys with projecting wings on both sides of the main façade. The costly foundation works caused the budget to be exceeded, and the building stopped in 1827, only to be resumed in 1833. In the meantime, the Storting refused additional grants as a demonstration against the king's unpopular efforts to establish a closer union between his two kingdoms. In 1833, Linstow produced a less costly project without the projecting wings, but with a third storey as compensation. Improved relations with the king made the Storting grant the necessary funds to complete the building. The roof was laid in 1836, and the interiors were finished during the late 1840s. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #royalpalaceoslo #charlesjohn #hanslinstow

This monument to Christian IV sits in Stortorvet in central Oslo, opposite Oslo Cathedral. It’s an impressive life size bronze statue of the king of Norway and Denmark (1588-1648) atop a granite base. Most famously, Christian IV renamed Oslo as Christiania after himself. The Oslo name did not return until 1925. The statue was unveiled in 1880. The surrounding square is not particularly impressive but the statue is worth a quick stroll by for the history it embodies. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #tigerstaden #christianiv #stortorvet #thetigercity #christiania

The tiger in front of Oslo Central Station is one of Oslo's most photographed "inhabitants" and one of the first things that meet a visitor arriving at Oslo Central Station. When Oslo celebrated its 1000-year anniversary in 2000, Eiendomsspar wanted to give the city a gift. Oslo wanted a tiger, and that's what they got: a 4.5-metre bronze tiger made by Elena Engelsen. The reason Oslo wanted a tiger, is the city's nickname Tigerstaden ("The Tiger City"), which most Norwegians are familiar with. The name was probably first used by Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. His poem "Sidste Sang" from 1870 describes a fight between a horse and a tiger; the tiger representing the dangerous city and the horse the safe countryside. Since then Oslo has been known as "The Tiger City", but these days it's not necessarily meant as a negative thing. "The Tiger City" can be an exciting and happening place rather than dangerous. #internationalvagabond #beautifulnorway #beautifuloslo #explorenorway #discovernorway #destinationnorway #travelnorway #beautifuloslo #traveloslo #destinationoslo #exploreoslo #march2024 #arcticcircletour #arcticcircle #tigerstaden #elenaengelsen #bjørnstjernebjørnson #thetigercity
