When I was in college back in 2014, my roommates and I stumbled across Miss USA on NBC. I had never actually watched a pageant before that time. I was so moved by the women on TV. In my eyes, they were the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. They were so confidence and courageous. My heart filled with admiration for the pageant world. Not for one moment during the show did I think I could be one of those women walking across that big stage. It felt too unachievable, too unrealistic, for me. I didn't realize that that night in 2014 set in motion a dream to achieve the unachievable. It took me two years to muster up just enough courage to deem myself "good enough" for a competition. With A LOT of hard work and patience, I finally had my moment. I became one of “those women” that I never thought I could be. I walked the Miss USA stage. When I was in college back in 2014, my roommates and I stumbled across Miss USA on NBC. I had never actually watched a pageant before that time. I was so moved by the women on TV. In my eyes, they were the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. They were so confidence and courageous. My heart filled with admiration for the pageant world. Not for one moment during the show did I think I could be one of those women walking across that big stage. It felt too unachievable, too unrealistic, for me. I didn't realize that that night in 2014 set in motion a dream to achieve the unachievable. It took me two years to muster up just enough courage to deem myself "good enough" for a competition. With A LOT of hard work and patience, I finally had my moment. I became one of “those women” that I never thought I could be. I walked the Miss USA stage. Move over Miss Universe. Artificial intelligence has come for our... beauty pageants?! A company called Fanvue has teamed up with the World AI Creator Awards (WAICA) to launch the world's first beauty contest for computer-generated models. A team of judges – comprising two humans and two virtual models – will choose "Miss AI." A press release from WAICA notes that the competition "signifies a monumental leap forward – launching almost 200 years after the world’s first ever real life beauty pageant took place in the 1880s." Contestants will be judged on "some of the classic aspects of pageantry" and the "the skill and implementation of AI tools used to create" the contestants. Miss AI (well, the creator behind Miss AI) will win a $5,000 cash prize, promotion on the Fanvue platform and PR support worth more than $5,000. The idea is being met with the same criticism often directed at real beauty pageants. "Rather than being a leap forward... it feels like a monumental step backwards," wrote Arwa Mahdawi in the Guardian. "AI models don’t disrupt traditional beauty standards, they exaggerate them. They take every toxic gendered beauty norm and bundle them up into completely unrealistic package." Britain's pageant historian Sally-Ann Fawcett is one of the two human judges on the panel that includes AI models Emily Pelligrini and Aitana Lopez.
