Day 2 - why do I compete? 🩵 So this little girl can continue to play dress up and believe she is the princess she always dreamed of being. Why do I compete? Originally, I entered a pageant for a very simple reason. I wanted to wear a beautiful dress on stage. I wanted to walk on a national stage, less than two years after I had been unable to walk. And then I fell in love with pageants, and I realised, I didn’t enter pageantry just for myself. I entered it for all the autistic children who thought that autism looks like a white cis boy interested in space. I want people to look at me and say ‘she’s autistic’. Not, ‘she’s mildly autistic’, ‘she doesn’t look it’. Because I’m not ashamed of who I am. Fifty years ago, there weren’t many queer autistic girls an a pageant stage. And now, I want that to be the norm. I’ve never been normal in my life, and i hope that I can show all the other autistic children, who never saw themselves reflected in the media, that they don’t have to fit in and be normal. ✨My 17TH lap around the sun✨ It’s my birthday! Ten years ago I was a terrified autistic child who couldn’t see a way out. Even three years ago I was desperately unwell, and unsure if I’d be able to make it to my seventeenth year. And now I have done it. I’ve had one of the most life changing years of my life, from competing in two national pageants, reaching the end of my my college course, taking part in activism events, and raising money for charity. None of this would have been possible for the girl I was five years ago. In the last year, I’ve •achieved my major goal of placing in a pageant •spent a year being out-and-proud queer •educated many people on the reality of being autistic •made more friends through beauty events than I could have imagined And those are the big things. The little things, to me, are just as important. I can wear heels all day without worrying my mobility will suddenly disappear. I wear a bikini on the beach without worrying about my body. I write a post for social media, and share it with my 700 followers. I’m starting to be the girl I wanted to be, and the girl I want others to be able to look up to. Swimwear was without a doubt the thing I was most “in my head” about when it came to competing in Galaxy again. Last time I competed in swimwear was ten years and three kids ago, but I knew I wanted to push myself way out of my comfort zone as that’s when we grow the most. Although I had a little stumble, I felt so good in my swimwear round, and was delighted to take away best in swimwear as well as other awards. For me it was also a massive achievement as I set out to show other women, wether they’re a mother or not, that our value in pageants isn’t limited by marital and parental status or having the best body. We all know that, especially in the UK pageantry industry, that it’s not always all about looks and body shape, but I still feel it’s different when you see someone else achieve their goals that you can see yourself in.
