Buongiorno petrolheads! Iniziamo la settimana con una delle auto che personalmente ritengo tra quelle che mi hanno sorpreso di più già solo per il fatto che esistono - la FIAT 130 (🇮🇹 1969-1977). Una berlina torinese alimentata da un motore V6 (che molti, sbagliando associano al V6 della Ferrari Dino). Auto che nasce per competere sul mercato che non era mai appartenuto alla casa torinese, cioè quello di berline Gran Turismo di lusso. Le intenzioni erano quelle di creare una concorrenza temibile per le rivali tedesche quali le BMW e la Mercedes-Benz. Purtroppo spesso, uscire dal seminato vuol dire farsi del male e così fu anche questa volta. Partendo dai progettisti e finendo sul pubblico il modello non convinse. I primi erano dubbiosi sulla opportunità in se di fare la vettura che non fosse destinata alle masse, la cosa che distingueva da sempre la FIAT, il pubblico invece non si fece convincere ne per la stilistica della vettura, ne tantomeno per la meccanica. Basta dire che consumi erano superiori addirittura a alcuni V8 statunitensi con valori dell'ordine di 3km/litro nel ciclo urbano... La cosa dovuta principalmente al peso della auto e agli errori progettuali del motore V6 che la alimentava. In più, il colpo di grazia in questa situazione fu la crisi petrolifera che ebbe inizio nel '73 e non ci stupisce che delle FIAT 130, considerando tutte le versioni e motorizzazioni furono prodotte meno di venti mila esemplari. So I decided to fit my mount inserts yesterday and also fit my nice shiny centre section… didn’t actually get either job done my back box is sleeved and clamped and the new b pipe has a flange (😂😂😂 flange) so no go till I sort that. Then on to the mounts, as you can see from the photo the inserts won’t fit as the mount looks to be aftermarket 😵💫. So onto FB and eBay to find an oem mount. That’ll be here next week. Next we have this charming 1987 Plymouth Gran Fury sedan. Throughout the 1980’s, the Gran Fury and Dodge Diplomat found their greatest success as use in various police and taxi fleets. However, civilian models were offered all along. This particular car has the luxurious SE interior. It’s kind of funny to look back and realize that these started life in late 1975 as the compact Aspen and Volare, and would soon also become the midsize LeBaron and Diplomat, before suddenly becoming the full size Fifth Avenue/Diplomat/Gran Fury! Here we have a 1992 Buick Regal Custom sedan. This car has the much rarer early front end treatment, which I personally love. The car may seem underwhelming now, but the midsize sedan market was red hot in the early 90’s, and Buick was not going to sit by the side, this was a solid entry in the category, and sold reasonably well. Here we have a first generation Oldsmobile Bravada, wearing a set of Corvette wheels. The Bravada was one of the first midsize luxury SUVs on the market, way back in 1991. While obviously based on the Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Jimmy, the Bravada differed by offering unique lower body cladding, a unique grille, and little Oldsmobile emblems on the tail lights. Inside one was treated to unique seating, in a choice of cloth or leather. Power features were everywhere, along with digital instrumentation, and a special center console with floor shift. The most noteworthy feature for the e Bravada was the standard all wheel drive, known as SmartTrack. I figure if grownups can still play video games, then there is no reason why I can’t still build things with legos! I’ve always loved to design and build buildings and houses, and I’ve always collected toy cars. So naturally I’ve always enjoyed designing and building miniature car dealerships! I’ve been working on this one for a few weeks, and I finally got it finished! It’s my largest build by far. It features two stories of glass walls, with a brick section, slightly offset from center, to add visual interest, and provide a spot for the Cadillac crest sign to be prominently displayed. Inside there is a large showroom, with a glass tile floor, that gives the impression of not only elegance, but that the cars are floating! To the rear is an actual stage, complete with turntable and it’s own stage lighting. To the right is a spiral staircase that leads up to the promenade that gives a commanding view of the showroom below. Off to the right is the service reception, which features a spot for an additional car to be displayed in front of a large window. Finally in the rear is the service department, where all the magic happens, that keeps the cars running and looking their best! These photos aren’t exactly my best work, but I’m placing them here for safe keeping. Five years ago I spotted this 1994 Mercury Cougar XR-7 MX Brougham sitting behind the Toyota store in Ann Arbor. Despite it being rusty, it held significance for me. Back when I worked for Mr. Sesi, we saw quite a few of these come through, and for whatever reason, I always liked this particular Landau roof treatment. My best friend James had a 1992 model with this same roof, and I loved it! I tried to buy a 1993 model with it, but I just wasn’t able to make it happen. One thing is for certain about these Cougars, and their Thunderbird platform mates, the chassis engineers at Ford really did their homework, and created one of the best driving and handling of the 1990’s with these. I haven’t shared it here yet, but a little over a week ago, I acquired for myself, a second automobile. This 2006 Chevrolet HHR belonged to an older lady that placed into a home, so the family was selling off stuff, and long story short, I got the car! It’s currently a work in progress, as I’m still working on making it look and feel more like “my car”.
