The Little Grebe is relatively easy to find in lakes, pools and river backwaters in Andalucia, although the species usually hides well. It was downright amazing how I was able to take a picture of the bird quite close. The southernmost town in Spain, Tarifa is located in the middle of one of the most significant bird migration routes in Europe. It acts as a huge funnel that collects birds on a narrow migration route both in spring and autumn. On one day of our trip in October, we took a short walk to the tip of Tarifa, to Punta de Tarifa and Frontera Mar Mediterráneo. During that time, without our intention to follow the migration this time, a dozen Booted Eagles migrated above us to the sea and across the Strait of Gibaltar to Morocco. In the fields of Doñana, during our trip in October, there were thousands of White Storks in concentrations of different sizes. There they find e.g. frogs as well as small crabs, which are plentiful in the irrigation ditches of the fields. * A few decades ago, Spanish White Storks migrated to Africa for the winter, but nowadays a considerable number of White Storks also spend the winter in the country. Large numbers of White Storks from other parts of Europe also stay in Spain for the winter. In addition to climate change, the background is also the fact that these large birds find suitable food even in winter. They have also learned to utilize human food scraps, which they search for in large flocks in landfills. However, there is a risk that they may swallow plastic and other potentially harmful objects. Had a great walk around Charco de la Boca reserve on the edge of Doñana National Park. Saw over sixty different birds including my first purple heron (slightly blurry 2nd photo) and also managed to capture these two green sandpipers who sat still just long enough! Día mundial del Gorrión Esta pequeña ave que vemos tan a diario está sufriendo un gran declive en los ultimos años. La mala alimentación, los pesticidas, la desaparición de las zonas verdes en las ciudades y la contaminación del aire entre otros factores tienen la culpa. El gorrión nos beneficia controlando plagas de insectos y parasitos , dispersan semillas ayudando a crecer la vegetación y son un claro bioindicador de calidad del aire. It´s a great story how the Glossy Ibis survived in a few decades from being condemned as a breeding species to extinction in Spain in the 1980s and how it became a plentiful first in Andalusia, from where it started to spread to other countries too. * Before a few breeding pairs were found in 1993 in the Valencia the last known breeding took place prior to the 1940s. After severe drought 1991-1995 during 1996 seven couples were breeding was proven in the Doñana. Since then the population has been growing, except for the dry years, to more than one thousand in 2004 and more than ten thousand in 2017. The total number of birds ringed until 2017 was 17,565. Many of 30,000 resightings have proceed from European countries, North Africa, and even a few of them from America. Some fields on the edge of the Guadalquivir had an amazing sight when we estimated that there were at least 6,500 Glossy Ibis in two flocks close to each other. Also in the same view was a huge flock of at least 4,000 Greater Flamingos and hundreds of White Storks. In pictures 2.-4. only a small part of the bird masses is visible. The Black Wheatear is a scarce species in Spain, found here and there in the mountains. They have been encountered many times along mountain roads, but the species is very timid and very easily flies away from a distance. So it is quite difficult to manage to get photos of them. This has often happened to me. * The first picture shows a bird that was on the edge of a cliff by the road in a strong wind. The next picture is the same as the first one, but cropped less, and it gives a better view of the species territory. The same also applies to the last picture, which is also a typical picture, as it has been possible for me to get the species (without specifically trying to approach the bird by leaving the mountain roads, which would probably have been pointless). Time and time again, it is interesting to notice abroad that many familiar domestic bird species have very different appearances. One of these species is the Long-tailed Tit. We in Scandinavia have a subspecies (caudatus) whose head is completely white without dark bands and it is also whiter on the underside with only slightly pink flanks. People often talk about these very cute birds as if they were flying cotton balls. * The Iberian Long-tailed Tits belong to the subspecies group (europaeus), which are generally darker in appearance. The picture shows a male Cirl Bunting. The species is a fairly common and widespread resident in Spain. It resembles the Yellowhammer, especially the females. Instead, the male has a distinctive facial pattern, characteristically black throat and eye-strpe, and broad greenish breastband which, however, are not as clear in fresh autumn plumage as in spring. Although the Barn Owl is fairly common in farmland and pastures in Spain, you rarely manage to see them by chance. On the other hand, during my trips, this species has not been the subject of a special search. Sometimes it has been found by chance in a car window on the side of the road, in the bushes, or in old buildings. However, the owl has always seen us first, and we have only seen it when it has already decided to move and fly elsewhere. In this fast situation, it is very challenging to even try to get a decent picture of the bird flying away. * This is also the case with the owl in the picture, but after flying away, it decided to turn towards a small group of trees nearby. Then I got a few pictures of it just before it disappeared behind the branches. The Common Buzzard is a very common species in Spain. You can often see them by the roadsides sitting in trees and on various fence posts. Often the birds are attractively nearby for photography. In practice, however, as soon as you start opening the car window, the bird flies away without you having time to take any pictures. So when this time, the bird was comfortably close to the road in some structures of a farm yard, I had to take advantage of the situation by taking pictures from inside the car through the window. Because of this, you can see the image is not completely sharp and has considerable blurry areas.
