It's been awhile since I've been on stage in front of a live audience... Should be fun. Topdog/Underdog is a play by American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks which premiered in 2001 off-Broadway in New York City. The next year it opened on Broadway, at the Ambassador Theatre, where it played for several months. In 2002, Parks received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Outer Critics Circle Award for the play; it received other awards for the director and cast. The play chronicles the adult lives of two African-American brothers as they cope with poverty, racism, work, women, and their troubled upbringings. Rowan Sebastian Atkinson CBE (born 6 January 1955) is an English actor, comedian, and writer. He is best known for his work on the sitcoms Blackadder (1983–1989) and Mr. Bean (1990–1995). In my experience, there's no better feeling than finding your teacher. I've had many brilliant editors, mentors, and coaches since I was a child. I've always tried to give credit where it is due because talented teachers make great artists. Over the last few months I have been working with London-based acting coach Jake Harders (pictured here.) I met Jake in London last summer when I studied at The Central School of Speech and Drama from which many of my favorite actors graduated. I've personally been fascinated by the naturalistic style of acting that originated in the UK since spending a summer in London and watching lots of British television. (And watching the Brits get cast repeatedly in the States.) Jake is an excellent teacher and working actor/director who has given me confidence and a feeling of ownership over the material we work with. He has taught me that acting is no different than real life and is in fact, a tool to connect with myself and others in a more meaningful way. During our sessions, I learned how to not judge myself or the character, as Jake does not judge me, and absorb all of the amazing material that is around me by being present and studying nature. I admire the depth of his knowledge as well as his ability to direct in a confident, kind way. I've included a link to an interview I did with Jake last summer in my profile.
