FUN FACT: my formal education isn’t in photography but in environmental science and biology (with a lil sprinkle of entomology in there)! It’s not something I’ve talked about here in a long while, and in all honesty, it feels like I’ve lived a lifetime since science Tori shined in all her buggy glory. My photography journey didn’t start out with pictures of people, but instead with plants and insects. Post college graduation I imagined myself working in the field for National Geographic taking macro pictures of newly discovered critters, or environments impacted by whatever climate horror hit next. Through a lot of self-discovery (and serendipity), I ended up on my current photography path. While I still hold my environmental science past close to my heart and try to incorporate my love for the natural world into my work and business practices, building community and preserving memories through portraiture holds value for our Earth too. So I've talked planners, but let's talk about vendors that HEAVILY effect photos- your glam squad. A good hair and makeup team can make or break photos- personally this was a huge thing for my own wedding! I don't wear makeup EVER and needed someone who wasn't going to make me feel too over the top, like someone else. But for my clients who want heavier makeup, or a specific hair style, I like to have a good amount of recommendations on hand to make sure they can find the dream team for the morning of the wedding! 3:54am. I woke up the other day and found a video I recorded at 3:54 am with an idea for a caption (I had spent most of the day batch creating captions so the ideas were flowing all night 😂) I was at a session with another photographer, we made tea, and we were talking about how hot the tea was, but in a few minutes if we leave it to cool down it will be cold in an instant (everyone experiences this right?!) So in an attempt to turn this into an illustration for business, It reminded me of a few projects I was working on. When I first start a project, I am on FIRE. So many ideas, working at it every day, all the things. But then life gets in the way or I procrastinate, or whatever excuse you want to give, you slowly stop working on the project, and eventually it becomes just another unfinished folder on your computer. This is why consistency is KEY. In business, in life, in whatever hobby you have. You don’t have to be on FIRE every single day, but don’t let days go by without working on it. A little bit each day can go a long way, and you’ll be glad you didn’t give up on what you’re working on. Thank you for coming to my ted talk aka. 4 am thoughts with Hannah 🤣

Scared to go all-in with color for your wedding but love the idea of not going all white or neutral? Go for more subtle color and add a few pops of something a little funky. I LOVE how @reverieeventsandweddings added a pop of chartreuse to this color palette and how well it worked with the creams, mauves, taupes, and other softer colors. This palette looked amazing in the white, bright space but could also pop in a darker/moodier venue. The brighter pops of yellows and chartreuse worked beautifully with the warm neutrals and romantic florals from @emmaharrisfloral . This whole vibe is great if you want something a little more funky but still want to keep it bright, soft, and a little more neutral leaning!

It might seem a little out of the box, but I LOVE seeing color added to weddings with fruit! This shoot had figs, peaches, pomegranates and blackberries, all accenting the color palette. Against an outdoor backdrop, the rich colors in this palette looked SO AMAZING. Don't be afraid to go out of the box not just with your color palette, but with the actual floral design. I've seen figs, apples, berries, even kale used in floral design to compliment the color palette of the day and it always looks STUNNING.
One of my favorite seasons for BOLD wedding color palettes is the winter! These days we don't always luck out with snow at winter weddings, and bold colors can really look great on a snowy day, or if it's just Pittsburgh winter brown outside. And colorful doesn't have to be BRIGHT- I loved how at this shoot, @sapphireandlace mixed rich jewel tones and bright corals with more neutral taupes and greenery. Also- fruit mixed with florals? My fave! Color doesn't have to be crazy, so don't shy away for fear of it being too bright or not seasonally appropriate!

One of my favorite parts of a wedding day is the reception. To me, it’s mostly the people that make each wedding different and unique. I love capturing all the fun and different ways each reception leaves its own mark (example: the incredible makeshift limbo on slide 2, or the dance-off from slide 4🙌🏻). The award for the shortest and most challenging wedding ceremony goes to… Shelby and Joe’s Pagan Halloween wedding! Two things made this a challenge: the location, the duration. According to my camera’s timestamp, their entire ceremony lasted 4 minutes and 8 seconds. Do you understand how short that is? Now, combine that with the obstacle of showcasing the couples’ bold choice of having their ceremony on a balcony. Picture this—me discreetly sprinting around the balcony, to practically rubbing elbows with the officiant—because I wanted to tell the full story of the ceremony. For me, that meant taking a gamble on making a really wide photo that showed the couple with guests seated below, as well as getting very close to the couple so that I could show the grand hall with purple uplighting flowing in the background. As a former photojournalist, I am used to seeking out variety in a scene. I covered it all without missing the hand fasting and ring exchanges. And within 4 minutes and 8 seconds? Phew.

April showers bring May flowers is kind of a lie when it comes to Pittsburgh. If you're hoping for some of those spring florals for your session, they bloom as early as mid-March and as late as the end of April. While the blooming trees seem to be the first to pop up, they're often the first to go. Thankfully, there are some amazing spots in the Burgh for a little floral backdrop for photos. Early spring weddings are awesome and I'm not just saying that because I've got a March anniversary! 🌸💐💍Once we hit mid-March, the weather can be a little unpredictable in the Burgh, but I also love it.
