A little while back I went to the USA to graduate as a Facilitator of David Bayer’s Phenomenal Coaching System (and it is phenomenal). One of the requirements to graduate was attending a 2-day conference/graduation event in Orlando, Florida. It meant I have to fly over 20 hours for a 2-day event and fly back again, not to mention the cost involved in travel and accommodation. Here’s the point. The phrase in and of itself can be confronting. “Confront the brutal facts.” What are “the brutal facts”? Brutal facts are things we may or may not know that are getting in the way of us achieving what we want to achieve. We love the beach so thought we would head down the coast and have breakfast. It was a beautiful morning until we arrived at the destination to find that the café appeared to be closed. A lady was walking her dog as we got off the bike. “Excuse me, do you know if the café is open?” I asked. “I don’t”, she replied. “Even though the lights look they are on and I’m a local, I don’t know.” “Oh well, not to worry”, I said. She thought for a minute, then said, “Actually, the surf house around the corner has just opened up a little café and a lot of the locals go there. The food is pretty good.” “Great! Thank you” and we hopped back on the bike and rode around to the surf club. It was amazing. We had a table with a view straight out to the beach and the ocean. We were in the shade and a gentle breeze was blowing. We could people watch, water watch and dog watch. The food was basic but good and the service quick (which I would have preferred to be slower so I could have stayed longer). As I sipped my coffee, feeling very relaxed, I was grateful. It was the last 90 minutes for the Leading Yourself and Leading Others Experience. We celebrate with a graduation party. I ordered some beverages and a cheese platter and asked them to be served in the room because last time they were left outside the room and someone out of our group helped themselves to a couple of beers. I finished reading Bruce Lipton’s book, “The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles”. It was first published in 2005 and then updated ten years later in 2015. It was a fascinating book, written by a scientist who explains how our beliefs or perceptions are “programmed” before the age of 6 and “which control our biology for the rest of our lives … or at least until we make the effort to reprogram them.” (Lipton, p173) Lipton states that our subconscious mind controls about 95 percent of our behaviour. This explains the disconnect we have between our conscious mind where we set goals and desires and our sub-conscious mind which will either be in alignment with our goals or not. Alignment equals achievement, non-alignment means lack of achievement or self-sabotage. It also explains why will power alone doesn’t last. Have you ever “gone on a diet”? Have you ever taken action to change a habit? This week I started back on “The Fast 800”. Eight hundred refers to the number of calories you can eat in a day. I followed it a year or two ago and released about 8 kilos. (I can’t say lost, or I might find it again, which I did.) I found it challenging and I know what I am in for again. I’m having to use my mindset training not to allow my limiting beliefs to dominate and create the exact experience I don’t want, e.g. “It’s going to be hard”. Well, that may not be true. Have you ever noticed that the words we choose and how we say things can have a remarkable effect on others? I was just typing an email to a client and I started to type, “I called you yesterday and left a message”. As soon as I typed it, I realised, I don’t need to say that. The effect of saying that could make the receiver feel bad. She might feel guilty because she didn’t call me back. She might feel annoyed and frustrated because I reminded her that she didn’t do something. She might be angry with me for being passive aggressive and making her wrong. By typing that, I ran the risk of harming the relationship. The other thing to note is that including those words and especially starting with them, was not necessary. Start with something positive. I had a really interesting conversation with a participant in the next Leading Yourself and Leading Others experience. Participants complete a profile and we spend 2 hours together understanding the report and identifying what works and what gets in the way of achieving what they want. Participants share their life stories and I feel very privileged to hear what people have done and experienced in their lives. In our meeting this week, I commented about the poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis, that is often read at funerals and which is about the metaphor of the hyphen that separates the birth date and death date on a tombstone. It represents what we do between the two dates and I commented that this participant has a big dash, not that she is old, rather that she has done a lot in her lifetime. I’ve mentioned a few times about the REACH profile. What's been interesting to see when working with companies is that some have at least one of each profile (Counselor, Coach, Advisor and Driver), whilst others are missing a Driver. You need a Driver. A Driver is focussed on the “what”. They are results and outcome focussed and they will push us to get things done. Without a Driver, we can tend to take it a bit easy and may not accomplish as much as we are capable of. Here are the key words for the profiles and how they fit together. ⭐ Counselor – “who”. They focus on the people and are great at creating team and welcoming and inducting new team members. ⭐ Coach – “why”. They’re great at inspiring and rallying others around a cause once they understand why the cause is important. ⭐ Advisor – “how”. They want to know the details and will push you to share how you plan on achieving your goals. Interestingly, one of my clients recently demonstrated this perfectly in a management meeting when he pushed the Chair (a Counselor) for “How? How are we going to achieve this? Catching up and celebrating with Kip McGrath franchise family in Salisbury SA for Mike's 80th! If you've read my book The Loyal Lieutenant: How The Second-In-Command Brings The CEO’s Vision To Life, you'll know how much of an important role the Kip McGrath "family" played in my business and career journey. The book is a blend of my 21+ years working with small business clients and also having been a 2IC at Kip McGrath Education Centres in Newcastle many years ago. I was thrust into my first 2IC role by owner Kip McGrath after originally moving to Newcastle to be his national franchise manager. I created systems and processes to enable the company to expand from 200 clients Australia wide to over 550 worldwide and list on the Australia stock exchange - with just 17 employees. I love it when my peeps embody what they have learned. By embody, I mean they live it; they act it as opposed to having what we call “propositional” knowledge, where we think we “know” something but aren’t yet doing it. They actually do something with the knowledge. For the sake of privacy, we’ll use the names Jim and Jane. Jim and Jane work together. Both are leaders and managers. Jim is an Advisor personality. Jim is a great risk mitigator because he considers all the information and ramifications of different scenarios. He needs to research and think about things before making a decision. The root meaning of decide is to “cut off all options”. It’s not until we move or take action that we have actually decided, so Jim can be a little slow to act. Jane on the other hand is right on the line between Driver and Coach personality. In the REACH profiling system, Drivers and Coaches are on the action side of the matrix. Jane wants action. “Come on, let’s go. What’s the hold up?” Their basic differences in personality, which remember, is simply a habit of how we think, feel and act, can cause frustration between them. One pushes, one pushes back. When we talk about manifesting, what thoughts come to mind for you? For many of us, it’s the attainment of something we have been wanting. Whether we’ve consciously worked to create our desire, as in visualising, reciting affirmations, journaling etc. or unconsciously, where we’ve simply decided we want something and then seemingly magically it appears, according to Abraham Hicks, “Manifestation represents what you’re doing vibrationally”. In other words, you attract what is a match for your current vibration. Abraham says, “Manifestations are ideas. Thoughts are manifestations. When you’re thinking of something, it’s a thought that’s manifested. One of my favourite profiling tools is called the Reach Quotient. It's similar to D.I.S.C. and other profiling tools in that it measures our basic trait or personality. However, it goes further than the others in that we can also measure the degree to which you are speaking another’s language, i.e. we can measure the size of your REACH. This is exceptional because it shows exactly where you are and the impact you have on the four styles as well as identifies areas for improvement. The higher the “REACH”, the better the leader and communicator. The better the leader, the more respect the team has, the greater retention, higher productivity and sales. Most mornings, when Ross and I have breakfast, we play Wordle on the iPhone. It’s amazing how much of our school English grammar and spelling lessons come back as we attempt to work out the word for the day. We often start with a word that has at least two different vowels so we either eliminate them or find that they are in the word. We look at the possible endings for the word. Sometimes it could be “ed”, “er”, “ey”, “et” etc. And sometimes, we have to sacrifice a letter that we know is not in the word but could help us work out some more letters. We acknowledge that we are sacrificing an attempt when we enter a word which has letters that we know are not included. We seek permission from the other, “I’m going to sacrifice the “s” to see where the letters go, is that ok?” Once we’ve sacrificed the letter, we often find that the other letters end up in the right place and we can work out what the word is. Sacrificing the letters makes it quicker and more accurate. And that’s the point for today. Sometimes you have to sacrifice in order to get where you want to go, quicker and easier. I was coaching with a client (we’ll call her Stacey). Stacey had some homework to submit from our previous session. She was to create a 5 minute training video using Loom. We’d talked about different ways to train people in previous sessions and Stacey had resisted using Loom. “I don’t like my voice. I don’t want to be seen on camera. I say ‘um’ a lot.” “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I only know one person who admits to liking their voice. When it comes to being seen, turn the camera off or even better, remember what Frank Kern taught me: “People are looking at you every day. Get over it.” So Stacey did. She submitted the video and we watched it together on Zoom. It was a fabulous video. It was natural. It was authentic; just as if Stacey was sitting next to you, showing you how to do it. Stacey had even made a mistake in the procedure and corrected it in real time. This was perfect because it showed how easy mistakes can be made and more importantly how they can be easily fixed. I wanted to share a paragraph or two from my book "The Loyal Lieutenant: How The Second In Command Brings The CEO’s Vision To Life". To set the scene, my relatively new boss had challenged me to undertake three years of management training with him and reach set milestones over that time. "Every six months, we would have a series of milestones. At the end of that six months, I'd have mastered a new skill. Ross looked at me one day. “It’s like you put on a new jacket at the beginning of the six months. It's as uncomfortable as hell. And then after a couple of months, you get it and loosen up in the jacket. It starts to feel good. And then, guess what? That jacket comes off and the process starts again with a new uncomfortable jacket. After wearing so many jackets, I reached a point where I was basically running the place... We once had the opportunity to “dog sit”. The dog didn’t understand where his owners were and who these two new people were, so he did his best to assert himself as the leader of the pack. The next morning, Ross and I decided one of us had to assume the leadership role. Here’s some leadership principles the dog taught us: 👉 There can only be one leader. 👉 Consistency is key, especially if you make new rules. 👉 Praise and reward go a long way. 👉 You must be present and give people (and dogs) attention, lest they start looking for it in ways you would prefer they didn’t. 👉 Adaptability and flexibility are also key skills for success (survival). 👉 Gestures work better than yelling. 👉 Teaching new skills requires patience and good communication skills. Not everyone speaks your language. 👉 If somebody does something wrong, it’s best to discipline them straight away, in a firm and caring way. 👉 You must plan for and allow time for fun. 👉 Systems and routines help to maintain order and increase efficiency. 👉 Clean up your mess as you go. 👉 It’s ok for the leader to learn new skills as well. 👉 Sometimes you have to change the environment to change behaviour. 👉 How you structure your teams and choose your personnel can have a huge impact on the results. (The dog next door influenced our dog to dig holes so they could socialise together, and get up to all sorts of mischief, not to mention the possibility of truanting.) 👉 Your team know when you’re out of sorts. (I was sick with a cold and he sat by my side the entire time, giving me great comfort and support.) A mentor of mine, Lisa Sasevich used to nag us, “You gotta name the baby”. What Lisa was referring to was our products and services and this week I found myself encouraging one of my clients to “Name the Baby”. In his case it was a project rather than a product or service. When you name something, it makes it easy for everyone to be on the same page. It makes it easy for your team or customers to know what you are talking about. It makes it easy for people to be able to refer to it and refer it on. When Ross was a Site Supervisor, one of his team members used to joke that it was a “Set Up”, when things didn’t go according to plan. This always amused and impressed me because he was able to make light of the situation. In my studies to become a certified coach of David Bayer’s Phenomenal Coaching Methodology, he too referred to the concept of being set up. David says it's part of The 4 Blessings of Failure: ⭐ Education (we learn something from the experience) ⭐ Redirect (life’s infinite intelligence is pointing out that we are off course) ⭐ Reflection (time to look more deeply into ourselves and understand more about who we are) ⭐ The Set Up (all of the above). Steve Jobs is often quoted as saying, “You can’t join the dots going forward” but if you look backwards you can always see how perfectly life has worked out. You know my purpose in life is to inspire, educate and support you to be, do, have and feel what you want. I couldn’t live into that if I was like everyone else. In order to fulfil on my mission, I’d have to have certain experiences. Whilst I’m here living the experience, I don’t necessarily have the insight and certainly don’t enjoy all of them. However, if we join the dots, we can see how life is always working for us and it is one big giant set up. So, reflect on your life. Join the dots. Look back and see how things have always worked out for you, even when you might not have enjoyed the experience. Ross was busy working with the referendum so I had the weekend to myself. I planned big things. There was sooooo much I was going to get done. I had a list of jobs I wanted to complete and the weekend came and went and I didn’t tick any off the list. Rather than being disappointed with myself or beating myself up, I was energised and excited. I sat down to read a few chapters of “The Divine Matrix” by Gregg Braden before starting my tasks and well …… Sunday night came and I picked Ross up and raced back inside to read the final 10 pages. “So what?”, you may think. “You read a book. Two people go for a promotion at work. Neither of them succeed. Max gets depressed and angry and full of negative self talk such as “I don’t know what I have to do to get ahead in this company. Why does this always happen to me? How come I never seem to get the promotion?” On the other hand, Wendy feels disappointed, however quickly shrugs it off and asks her supervisor, “What can I do to be promoted? What do you need to see in order for me to be recognised and promoted?” Which of the two do you think has the best chance of being promoted in the future, Max or Wendy? I trust you answered Wendy. Why? It’s because Wendy kept her head clean. She stayed open to possibility and she asked empowering questions. Our brain is like a Google search engine. Its job is to find the answer to your questions, so it’s imperative that you ask empowering questions. If you look at the questions Max asked, “Why does this always happen to me? How come I never seem to get a promotion?” It’s easy to see how his brain will come up with all sorts of reasons why it’s most likely not his fault. When you understand how the brain works and you understand that it is just another organ in the body, you can put it to work to find you the answers you need, to help you get what you want. We were stopped at the traffic lights on a hot and humid Friday afternoon in Darwin. “OMG! Years ago, like nearly 30, I was employed in various government departments. At the time, one of the buzz words was “community”. I confess, I really didn’t understand what it meant. In fact, it wasn’t until years later that I understood it to mean people knowing each other and looking after and supporting each other (my definition). Recently I happened to be walking along the street with a new friend when I bumped into an old friend. Immediately we hugged and had a chat. It was so nice to see someone familiar; someone with whom I had history. We had both been members of The Newcastle Speakers Club for years, during which we got to know each other and support each other as well as our fellow members and families. I’m so blessed. I have such great people in my life and community. This week I was working with my accountant. I was sharing my desire to travel to South Africa next year to complete the Silva Method Mind Control course again. The training is being held in a game park and it has always been my goal to visit a game park. This would be an amazing experience, combining the two. We hear people talk of time management and self management. There are any number of consultants and trainers that teach strategies for getting the most out of your day. One of my mentors, David Bayer explains that, “Time is irrelevant but timing is everything”. What he means by this, is that there is no advantage in becoming overwhelmed with our To Do Lists. From a spiritual point of view, life corresponds with us. If there is something you earnestly desire and have a vision and belief that it will manifest, then all you need to do is what you can do in a day, moving toward your vision and then surrender the rest. What you will mostly find is that many of the things you think you need to get done in a day, don’t have to get done, otherwise you would have done them. For the things that you didn’t get done, the universe will meet you half way and often help out with either new information that gives you an easier way to do it or you find it didn’t need to get done at all or someone shows up to help. As an example, I was freaking out about all the things on my To Do List and worrying about how and when I was going to get my accounts in order for the end of the quarter to be able to submit my BAS (an Australian requirement to submit tax collected on behalf of the government). Out of the blue my bookkeeper emailed me and asked how I was going with the accounts. Did I need any help? Yes please. She was able to get me an extension of time as well as help to complete a few of the tasks. Next time you’re freaking out and feeling overwhelmed, remember, simply get done what you can get done in the day and surrender the rest. Here's a story from my book The Loyal Lieutenant on how using my process from the book can create a customised solution for your organisation: "Psychologists Room Booking Procedure Prior to working with the team, the admin staff used a complicated spreadsheet system to assign consulting rooms to their team of psychologists. Some psychologists preferred the rooms upstairs. Some preferred the furniture in some rooms. The admin team were totally frustrated, doing their best to accommodate all team members’ preferences and ensure the rooms were fully booked. Listening to the needs of the admin team and the psychologists, I was able to customise a simple solution. We used a whiteboard. We drew a sketch, or mud map as we call it, of the rooms in the building. We asked the psychologists to choose a magnet they wanted to represent themselves. We asked them to place their magnet on the whiteboard in the area that represented the room they intended to use for the day. The new process was an instant success. The admin team no longer had to worry about scheduling rooms or upsetting psychologists. The psychologists could choose the rooms they wanted to use, and everyone could see whether the rooms were at capacity or not. In fact, I chuckled to myself when I had a review meeting with one of the directors about four weeks after we completed the project. He immediately went to the whiteboard to find a vacant room, stuck his magnet on the room and off we went for the meeting. Easy! Customised!"
