Happy Family Day long weekend! Or if you are in the US- presidents day! This weekend I was hoping to be swatching for a tester project, but my yarn has yet to come in due to this long weekend. 😭 Instead I kept my hands busy by knitting two head bands. I’ve never actually made the bottom pattern. I remember seeing my one friend in the Netherlands make it long to and thought how neat it was and whether I could ever make it. Then, I decided to do a cable stitch headband and to practice my cabling! I am terrible at wearing headbands, but I hope someone can enjoy these. Y’all, trying to take photos on your own without a tripod is HARD! And as much as I love my husband, taking photos of people is not one of his strong points. Oh well! So, I’ve perfected the selfie. Which I am fine with. Today I tried to take photos of this #cozyceltickerchief by @knitatude. I wanted to show the backside too which keeps the neck super cozy. I made this initially for myself, but, I think it would look fantastic on my mother with a black denim jacket that I gave her last summer. She is moving to Canada at the end of January (this month) and well, I am certain that she and my father will freeze. I’ve already made a Dickie and wool toque for my father, but this Dickie would be great for her! I love that the collar isn’t snug against the neck which is why I know that my mom will like it. She isn’t too fond of wool against her neck. So, about the pattern. Half way through it I noticed that I wasn’t reading the first row correctly. I was knitting and wondering why I wasn’t using the first cable knitting pattern and really read the pattern and realized I was in the wrong. Well, I decided to end it with the correct pattern versus frogging it all. Especially as I was using 3 skeins of yarn! I started with using @patonsyarn #highlandbulky yarn and ran out. So, I used #instantcart to get more #patonshighlandbulky yarn but the store was out! So, I got some #patonsinspiredyarn instead. Well, patons #inspiredyarn is not as bulky as #highlandyarn. This meant that I had to double up on the second yarn. Sheesh! Extra work to finish this project. It turned out well though. Also, what do y’all think of my lipstick? I tried something different. I got this lipstick from @maccosmeticscanada during the centennial and it’s called #macproudtobecanadian. It is a super red lippie. I think it’s more orange than true Canadian red. But that is just my take on the color. I’ve been making my #handmade #cableneedles (including the #gullwing and my #patented #fishhook styles), so I’ve been thinking a lot about #customerpreferences. “What do you do with your cable needles when you aren’t working with them?” was a question that recently popped up on a #knitting Facebook page. This question always cracks me up, because as a vendor I’ve discovered that folk who use cable needles have very strong opinions about this, not to mention the size, shape and weight of the needles they use. Which is why, btw, I make 3 different styles of cable needles in various sizes and metals. Anyway, I’ve had customers report that when they aren’t using my needles they use them as shawl pins or hair pins; they stick them behind their ears; they hang them from earrings or necklaces. Me, I tend to hook the Fish Hook style over my thumb or through the rings on my fingers. My most memorable customer was a person with many piercings about her body. She preferred to wear her cable needle as an earring or to stick it in another convenient piercing - but only if the needles are made of surgical steel. I haven’t gotten around to making cable needles out of surgical steel, but I’ve tucked this idea away, realizing that I need to learn more about the world of piercing. Anyway, in response to customers’ input, I’ve made a couple of modifications in this latest batch of cable needles. The ends are now sharper, to make it easier to pick up fine yarn. #cableneedles I’ve been in search of “the” perfect cable needle as long as I can remember. These are what I have right now (I’ve thrown away quite a few useless ones), and each has pros and cons. That said, the clover ones, the top right, remain my favorite overall. I’ve had them for a few decades now. The ones in the second photo seemed to have a good concept bc the lines make the needles non slippery but this means your yarn gets caught and doesn’t slide smoothly when you want it to. The one in the third photo is in the shape of pentagon. They might’ve been my favorites if the tips were a tad less pointy. Knitting is so deep😆 何だかんだ言ってクロバーに戻ってきます。なわ編み針に限らず、マーカーや、洋裁用具も優秀だな、と思います。

Call this a mini 2023 #retrospective. I’m working on my 2024 #todolist so I’m reviewing my 2023 sales. But there’s been a growing groundswell of interest in my forged and #foldformed brass and copper #vessels and #bowls, which is is thrilling. #customersatisfaction, #customerservice, Part 2. Today has been all about making sure my customers have the best experience possible. I had a customer who purchased a pair of my earrings and then discovered that she was having an allergic reaction to the silver ear wires on the earrings. The design precluded me from soldering on gold or platinum ear wires, but I drilled holes and attached #titaniumearwires. And just in case she needs to retrofit other earrings, I sent her a few pairs of different styles of stainless steel ear wires. Another customer had a problem with a order not being delivered because she’d initially given me an incorrect address. UPS wouldn’t accept a corrected address, so once the package made its way back to me, I bought a new mailing label and sent it on its way again. A repeat customer ordered a number of my #patented #cableneedles as gifts, so I made gift packages for each needle. Finally, a customer in Germany got to choose between different styles of my cable needles, because if she is going to spent so much on postage, I want to make sure she’s happy with her purchase. C A B L E S I met my boss enemy 😅 I’ve been very vocal, about not liking to knit with cable needles and here I am working on the Moby Sweater Men for my hubs - using a cable needle 🫣🤣 Seems like cabling over 10 stitches is not manageable without one - at least not for me 🤷🏼♀️ But we got used to each other, my cable needle and I and so I’m making good progress. I couldn’t resist taking a project picture, wearing this giant wip. A Tale of Two Cable Holders On the top, my handmade cable holder, made from 100% brass wire, shaped and textured by me. The bottom one is a $1.49 metal (possibly aluminium) cable holder from China that I bought on eBay. I wanted to look at the difference between the two, because I'd seen the manufactured 'swirl' cable holders about for $2-$10 in yarn shops and I was kind of curious how they compared to what I offered and I thought you might be too, if you were considering your options. 🤔 This isn't a judgement post, though. I'd like to be clear about that. I have bought my share of 'cheap' tools because the budget isn't there for more expensive items or the cheap option does the trick. And really, there's nothing wrong with the $1.49 cable holder. It will totally do the job. And the bonus is, if you lose it, you won't worry! 😂 Why then buy the handmade one? Well, let's put aside the 'feel-good' factor before we start. Supporting local makers is all well and good, but sometimes you do have to pick and choose what you'll spend your money on. Local makers get that too. 😃 I began making cable holders because I lost one of my precious brass cable holders and realised, hey, I could make my own! I'd bought the original one because I wanted to have a lifelong tool that had been made by hand (I will find it one day!). Aesthetically, it was also very pretty and therefore made knitting more pleasurable to me. Yes, I had the extra income at that point in my life and as a knitter, I did value an item made by hand. Also, that little extra weight in the metal felt good, while not interfering with my stitches. For me, that made it worth the investment. This is where there is a difference between something that is mass-produced and the item that is, in this case, forged by hand... it takes a lot of heat to make that swirl! The difference is in how we perceive the value. If it's simply to do the job - that $1.49 cable holder is just right. What’s in Alise’s Toolbox - Part 4 In today’s toolbox installment are small necessities that make a huge difference for knitters, crocheters, and those who sew. The first is safety pins. I use all different sizes. The smallest one I use the most to mark the first stitch when working in the round when crocheting. This way, you’ll always know where to start and end a round! I use the largest ones to mark the sizes when I’m churning out lots of kid’s hats at the same time and because they come in multiple sizes. Below the safety pins are two sizes of cable needles. A cable is a twisted stitch that looks like either a forward or backward “s.” These weird-looking needles are used in knitting to move stitches back and forth to create the cables for your project. The white one is for lightweight yarns and is small; the pink one is for medium-weight yarns and is the one I use the most. I know they look really weird, but they are essential for knitters. Last but not least, a tape measure! This is used to measure your work to ensure you have the correct gauge.
