Well, howdy, you zany bunch of characters in my topsy-turvy universe! It's your quirky pal, Professor Quirky Spirit, popping back into your dimension for another round of oddities. Ready for a tale that'll give your funny bone a workout? I ventured into my dusty whisky dungeon to pick out a vintage single malt that's older than dirt to whip up an excellent Old Fashioned. After some serious deliberation, we settled on this guitar-labeled Ardmore bottled by the whisky maestro. Legend has it that the distillery is guarded by kilt-wearing, bagpipe-playing highland cows who take their whisky-making duties very seriously. 🤪🤣 Distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2012 after 20 long years, there were only 146 bottles left in the cask, so the angels definitely had their fill. Rumor has it that these angels are expert whiskey connoisseurs and take their share very seriously. This "Peat Fighting Man" is bottled at a whopping 49.9% cask strength, so brace yourselves, my friends, for a wild ride! So, slàinte mhath, my amigos! Whitlaw, the name given to this Highland Park, is a nod to the Viking gods who prefer not to have their prestigious brand used. However, in today’s world, this seems irrelevant and I wish distilleries would realise that. Even if it were called Macallan, it wouldn’t make a difference. What truly matters is the taste, the experience, and the value - something that the modern-day Edrington seems to have difficulty grasping. Bottle info Highland Park (Whitlaw) Distilled June 2013 Bottled February 2024 (10yo) 1st fill PX and 2nd fill Oloroso casks 46% Expect to pay around £50 On the nose: red apples, crispy bacon, basil, strawberry fudge. Glazed cherries, very flat with the wood quashing the character. Water unlocks orange zest, melon and caramel. In the mouth: middling sherry, it’s odd. Figs, tobacco, earthy and wet bark. Water reveals coal, sooty, nutty and the PX coming through strongly. My thoughts Highland Park is usually dependable. I can’t help but question if the name change was necessary due to subpar casks. Signatory, on the other hand, fails again. Maybe the quality of casks has declined over time, affecting the blending process. A bad run of form continues. Score: 3/10

An extremely generous friend shared it with a lucky group of us, and we were all blown away by the dram. Glen Grant 1958-2023 Mr George Legacy 4th Edition: This exceptional dram has matured magnificently, its impressive age a testament to the superior quality of both spirit and cask management. The nose presents a rich tapestry of dark stewed cherries, molasses, and subtle notes of cigar boxes alongside waxed, aged leather. On the palate, it unfolds with a deep, rich cherry, crèame de cassis and chewy dates, complemented by the vibrant essential oils of ripe oranges. As it develops, layers of dark chocolate and coffee emerge, accented by a whisper of cigar ash. The finish is impressively long, marked by bitter chocolate, a touch of oak char, and a persistent dark cherry undertone. Having opened the Bourbon expression yesterday it’s time for a comparison before I pit them both against the OG 8 yr old CS tomorrow. On first contact the nose once again is smoked mackerel but also motor oil, wood spice fudge and faint struck match just at the end. Palate is savoury bbq smoked meat funk, raisins, dark chocolate, wood spice with a medium long finish. Needs some water. Another couple of @benromach single cask bottlings have hit the Canadian market; this time we have a pair of 10 year old ‘sister casks’ matured in Sherry Hogsheads (I don’t need to mention that it’s first fill, do I?). What I enjoy most about exploring the Benromach single casks is that it gives you a peek into the individual ingredients make up the blending/vatting of their core range, cask strength, and ‘contrasts’ releases; this is very helpful in pulling out individual flavors/sensations that might otherwise go unnoticed. A N Y W A Y . . . First up is cask number 305 and has an out-turn of 291 bottles for the Caledonian Whisky Bar in Toronto, Ontario at 61.2% ABV @thecaledonian This is a nutty, leathery, lemon-infused salty dram that leaves a lingering coffee, licorice and minty ash on the back end of this rather long finish. Very lush, viscous and a testament to how well made their distillate is. The other is cask number 306 that spit out 312 70cl beauties for The Whisky Rant Podcast ( hosted by Rob @whiskyinthe6 and Jeremy @sipperssocialclub ) at 61.4% ABV Bursting with sweet liquid ham, nutmeg, tomato, anise, cherry and oak that gives way to a rich dollop of smoked Nutella, there distinct funk weaving its way through which isn’t helping it avoid comparisons to a certain Campbeltown distillery *wink wink* This single cask (306) is the closest-tasting to their regular cask strength releases that I can remember having. It has most of the classic Benromach flavors despite there being no bourbon cask influence; I swear I can taste it sometimes. This has all of the things you want from a Benromach and nothing you don’t. Both (very different) bottles have been priced fairly at around 140 smackers and still available in small quantities.
