Cadillac Northstar LMP02 Ce soir un petit post sur la deuxième voiture engagée par Cadillac en 2002. La nouvelle voiture est développée par cadillac, et non dérivée de la Riley comme la 01. Le moteur subit une évolution au niveau du turbo et le reste du châssis et de la carrosserie est fortement inspirée de la reine de l'époque, la Audi R8. L'équipe s'engage seule et ne s'appuies plus sur le team Dams. Comme tout engagement pour le mans, le test ultime est d'aller aux 12h de Sebring. Et ça se passe mal. La numéro 8 sera 31ème et dernière classée, la numéro 7 ira abandonner... et la 3eme place de la course reviendra à la Riley MKIIIc, cousine éloignée de cette auto. Les 2 équipages sont composés de pilotes importants de l'époque. Wayne Taylor, Max Angelelli, et Christophe Tinseau s'occupent de la voiture 6 au Mans, pendant que @emmanuel.collard JJ Lehto, et Éric Bernard composent l'équipage de la 7. Les 24h du mans se passeront mieux avec d'honorables 9eme et 12eme places au genéral, néanmoins loin au chrono et derrière des engagements privés. Ceci est assez pour Général Motors qui n'ira pas au delà de cet engagement de 3 ans. Hang on, Cadillac made a race car before the DPi-V.R? Yes, they did, and I'll tell you more after the jump. This is the Cadillac Northstar LMP, Cadillac's entry into the LMP900 class (today LMP1) for the American Le Mans Series and for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car was designed by Riley & Scott, who developed this LMP car from scratch around a carbon fiber monocoque. This new design featured elements of Cadillac's new Art & Science design theme and large side scoops to feed the turbochargers. The cars used a 4.0L Northstar L37 V8, but with twin IHI turbochargers being fed through a 6-speed Xtrac sequential transmission. The new engine was developed in part by McLaren. A total of seven chassis were produced; two went to Riley & Scott, three to DAMS, one a show car and one spare tub. The cars were named after the Northstar engines that powered them. The car would be run by two teams; Riley & Scott under the guise of Team Cadillac in the ALMS and DAMS in the FIA Sportscar Championship. The car however was not as successful as General Motors and Cadillac had hoped, with the cars failing to win any of the races it entered. The car would be redeveloped in 2001 and substantially in 2002, replacing the IHI turbochargers with Garrett units and a new monocoque designed by Nigel Stroud, designer of the Mazda 787B. The car was somewhat more successful, claiming a second-place finish in Miami. After 2002 though, Cadillac pulled the plug on the Cadillac Northstar LMP project, as General Motors had felt that the project had achieved what it had meant to, with GM concentrating on the Corvette Racing project. Ten were built in total; 7 LMPs, 3 LMP02s. Now, about the casting. Designed by Mark Jones, this thing is surprisingly heavy. It also has a separate metal wing, which is a bit of a rarity.
