🍫 JVG Cafe Femenino Highlight: Guatemala! We've reached the last week in March and therefore, our final weekly Cafe Fem highlight. This week, we're getting into the stories behind our Guatemala! You'll find a clean, yet robust profile from this washed & dark roast coffee. With notes of smooth dark chocolate and juicy stone fruit, each element adds a pleasant sweetness. This USDA Organic and Fair Trade coffee is grown on farms owned and operated by women in the Huehuetenango and Sololá regions of Guatemala. These farmers are a part of two co-ops: ASOBAGRI and Nahuala. The Nahuala Cooperative began their Cafe Femenino program in 2005 when the women farmers gathered to receive fair compensation for their vital role in the Guatemalan coffee economy. This program eventually grew to include the ASOBAGRI co-op that started in 1989 and promotes literacy, crop and income diversity, sustainable agriculture, quality control, and healthcare. The women in these co-ops have increased their incomes, started an education initiative to promote leadership in their daughters, instituted coffee quality and production training, and increased decision-making power through leadership roles. The Cafe Femenino Guatemala program also created a successful micro-loan fund to support microenterprises led by women as another way to diversify and increase income! Support these amazing women by taking home a 12oz bag of coffee or by drinking a cup of Guatemala on drip in our cafes. This is the last week we're offering our full Cafe Fem lineup in our cafes! International Women’s Day 2024 Do you know the story behind our coffee? Our special blend, Crow Tree, was chosen by us, not just because its luscious, dark roasted beans taste amazing, but because this blend specifically supports female farmers involved in the @cafefemenino program. The Café Femenino Foundation was founded in 2004 to focus on helping women and their families in coffee communities. The founders of this program, whilst travelling to source coffee, discovered that in these remote coffee communities were women who had no voice or say in any family decisions, had no control of the family resources; essentially had no rights, socially, politically, or economically. They were poor, uneducated, and lived in isolation, all of which contributed to phenomenal rates of abuse. The Foundation helps promote the integration of women coffee farmers into social, political and occupational organisations by providing grants that help support the women’s efforts and enhance their status within the community. In doing so, the foundation is able to help improve the overall quality of life for the entire community and support a sustainable economic system. Café Femenino is a global program committed to empower women coffee farmers globally and to break the cycle of poverty. Since its establishment in 2003 in northern Peru, it has diligently reached out to provide support and resources to empower these women, enabling them to bring about positive change in their communities according to their own terms. The program has expanded its reach by opening a new store in Athens, Greece in the area of Nea Erythraia. Within the store, the women's cultivated coffee varieties are offered both as beverages prepared in a functional coffee area and as roasted beans displayed on the existing shelves. Cafe Femenino aims to convey the compelling stories of the women involved in the program and provide visitors a glimpse into their daily lives, drawing inspiration from the nature, architecture, and culture of their respective countries. The design incorporates natural materials such as wood, wicker, marble, plaster, and terracotta, lending an earthy color palette to most surfaces. The colonial style, inherently connected to the women's background, is embraced with the prominent use of curved elements. Furthermore, the design embraces the vibrancy and multicolored palette reminiscent of coffee-producing regions, which is also emphasized as a symbol of vitality and supports the underlying concept. This is effectively accomplished through decorative patterned flooring and handmade fabric lamps suspended from above. The space features straw baskets, symbolic objects utilized not only in the coffee collection process but also in various daily activities of the female coffee farmers. A few weeks ago we received a phone call from our friends @the_ssu and @ssuhungry saying their coffee order arrived looking like something exploded inside the box 📦 They sent us a quick video and we were so confused 😕 We remade the order and drove it to their Oakville Campus and picked up their old order to bring back to the roastery for inspection. 🧐 None of us could figure out what happened, but the giant hole in the side of the box was probably the culprit… We knew we couldn’t use this coffee for human consumption but we knew someone who could use it for worm consumption! Day two of Organic Week: Organic on The Farm 🌱 As mentioned yesterday, organic certification starts on the coffee farms. Our coffee is shade-grown meaning it promotes healthy biodiversity around it with larger vegetation over the coffee trees and smaller vegetation under them. That being said, the coffee trees don’t see a lot of direct sunlight and that can lead to smaller trees with less yield per year. 🌿 This is where some farmers would turn to growth chemicals and pesticides to keep their remaining trees alive. Our fantastic coffee farmers (pictured are women from @cafefemenino) are incredibly skilled at what they do and keep chemicals and pesticides out of their coffee. ☕️ This leads to delicious, naturally grown coffee that everyone can enjoy.
