Was able to connect on a nice meat pig while hunting on a Wilderness Unlimited property. Working my way down through a little valley that opened up into a big field. As I came to the edge of the field I could just make out something moving through the long grass, pulling up my binos I could make out those distinct pig ears in the grass. Gettin into position with my shooting sticks, the long grass was making if very difficult to make out the pigs through the scope. So I cranked up the magnification & just followed two good size pigs as they were milling around until they came to an opening. Waiting till they weren’t lined behind each other & 💥 PIG DOWN!!! After the shot the field erupted in chaos with pigs & piglets running all over. When the sun finally pokes through from the rain clouds, we start seeing more and more pigs coming out to investigate what food has made itself available from the last rain. When you get the phone call that pigs are hitting your buddy’s property, you better show up. I was working my way up a draw on a game trail looking up into a oak covered hillside with the sun at my back when I saw him. He was zig zagging through the trees coming down a game trail, so I started moving myself into position with my shooting sticks. It was my lucky morning to be able to take this pig off a Wilderness Unlimited property!!! I decided to go into a different part of the property than my normal area’s to check things out. Walking up a ridge line looking to either side easing my way towards the top of the hill. Nearly reaching the top, but stopping before because I have learned my lesson to be ready as you crest any hilltop never knowing what’s on the other side. I peak my head up & over to see a group of hogs working their way towards the property boundary fence line. Was able to harvest a real nice 🐗 on a Wilderness Unlimited property. It was a really foggy morning & I had seen some fresh sign the day before in an area. As I got into place up on a grassy knoll over looking a oak covered hillside trying to catch anything moving through the trees. When the sun finally burned off the fog, I caught some pigs in an open field through my binoculars. So took off running along the tree line & under two fences to close the distance. As I can upon a creek crossing that the pigs were on the opposite side last time I had caught a glimpse of them. Taking a few deep breaths to calm down my heart rate, I snuck up the embankment and to my dismay the field was empty. Discouraged I stand straight up & talking out loud “Where Did They GO???” taking a few steps forward. All of the sudden I see the backs of some pigs as they were down in a depression and out of sight. I dropped down to a knee taking my rifle off my shoulder & getting the shooting sticks ready. Stood up to see the pigs working their way back towards the tree line & 💥 PIG DOWN!!! Gonna call this guy the Morgan Hill Monster!!! My buddy had leased a spot in Morgan Hill, CA for his goats. I came out to look at the property, while walking around I noticed some pig tracks on some game trails. So I decided to set up some game cameras to see what we could catch on film. When out checking the cameras in the middle of the day with a buddy we saw what we thought was a cow walking on the ranch road. It ended up being this a GIANT HOG that saw us and was side hilling away, but not quick enough. Was on the second morning of my hunt after spotting pigs on the ranch the day before. So I went out to the spot I had seen them, but the wind wasn’t in my favor. Met another member of the #NockOnNation at the CA Fish and Wildlife Pig Hunting and Game Processing clinics this weekend. These advanced hunters ed (not necessarily for advanced hunters, just beyond the basic hunters safety course) classes are a treat. You meet some good folk, you hear from the game wardens themselves where and how to find critters, as well as some funny stories about catching poachers and some of the stuff you can do to easily avoid trouble with them in the field. Sunday’s clinic on game processing was great, three different pigs, three different hunter chefs gettin’ at it, sharing how they break it down and prepare the various cuts for their own families. As always, really appreciate the Compton Hunting and Fishing Club for hosting the educational sessions.
