All the feels I had the pleasure of marrying Zoe and Ryan last week at Drum Castle; boy, was it an emotional one? And not because the ceremony was sad. Yes its a serious matter getting married. Bu that doesn't mean that you cant have fun in the ceremony to. There are lots of areas in a wedding ceremony where we can add some fun, and I give your guests permission right at the start to join in if the couple are up for that. So they are allowed to laugh, or clap and whistle, even agree with what I'm saying, and they love that. When we include pets in a ceremony, they can normally bring a laugh as well. No matter how trained they are they often wonder off and do their own thing amongst the guests. We can have readings that are funny, I've even had 2 guests create their own poems/readings for the friends getting married and that's turned out to be so much fun. Symbolic rituals like a sand ceremony with young children involved can often be funny, without them actually trying to be funny. Vows, well I've seen some cracking vows as well, and they are normally kept as a surprise for the day so there are often lots of giggles from the couples. So yes it is a serious business and should never be taken lightheartedly but its never boring either. Whats the best craic you've seen at a wedding ceremony? PLANTING LOVE’S ROOTS The next Ritual that I'd like to share is the Tree-planting ritual. A tree-planting ritual is an ancient symbolic ritual regularly performed during family Ceremonies, much like a Unity Candle or Handfasting ritual. And a ritual that fits well today with couples looking for eco-conscious practices to include in their ceremonies. Now, it doesn't have to be a tree; it could be a plant that you can keep in your garden. But I love this one, and it's very poignant to me right now with all the forests being chopped down around Scotland. A small wedding has as much excitement as a larger wedding, and the same work goes into their script as does a larger wedding. And there are a few benefits of having a smaller wedding. With a small wedding, you don't have to worry about missing any guests out in the chat. The atmosphere is much more intimate. They are easier to plan, and you get to choose a venue that might otherwise be out, depending on the numbers. Say it with flowers. I have had the pleasure of doing 2 ceremonies in the winter gardens in Duthie Park Aberdeen, and they have been very special ceremonies and the couples couldn't have picked a more lovely spot for what they wanted their ceremonies to be like. It turned out they were both on the hottest days of the year in 2021 and 2022, so we were pretty hot, and I had to wear sunglasses on those days it was that bright. But the smells and the birds chirping away in the background was pure magic. Tying the knot Lots of my couples for 2024 are considering tying the knot in their wedding ceremonies. And it's a beautiful ritual for a wedding ceremony, also known as handfasting. And I'm often asked what should they use as the ties. Well, it can be many different things, like you can see in the pictures here, for example. In the first photo by @alisonwhitephotographyuk, Liz and Matthew ordered special hessian ribbons for their ties, which included the name of the book that their daughter Ella was reading in the ceremony, Love You to the Moon and back. They had two ribbons, and we tied their knots to the family values, including their two daughters in the binding as well. And the second picture photo by @jdyerphotography1 is macrame cord which Amanda pleated herself for her and Neils's wedding. Don't they look amazing? I've seen ribbons used, a piece of the bride's mums wedding dress, granny's favourite scarf, in fact, even a football scarf :) So as long as you get the length right for a hand tie, which is approx 2 metres, you can use anything you like, anything that matters to you. Wheres the wedding Where your wedding is being held is a good page to have on your wedding website. Here, you can put lots of information about the venue and links for them to have a look around. I would start with a map of the location, their contact details and any tourist information you can find out about the venue and the surrounding area. If you have guests coming a fair distance, they might make a weekend out of your wedding and see around the area. Have you got some preferred rates with the hotel for your wedding guests? Then add that so they know to ask for that when they book their accommodation. The facilities - does it have a gym or a swimming pool? The more you let your guests know about the venue, the more they can be prepared. Could it be my kids? Another question I often get asked about is how couples can include the kids in the ceremony, and I have the perfect solution. In today’s world, having a blended family is practically the norm, and sometimes, finding a way to include everyone in a wedding ceremony can be as tricky as herding cats. But fear not, I’ve got a solution that might suit you all. Why not have all the kids walk you down the aisle? If you have more than one child between you, why not have them all walk you down the aisle in stages? They could each walk you to different spots along the aisle. You could organise it by age. So, the youngest could start your journey to the top of the aisle. As you progress, the next in line can take over, and so on. Finally, the eldest child can have the honour of handing you over to your new partner, or vice versa. After your wedding is over, I have a little feedback form that I ask my couples to complete for me. It lets me know if I’m doing things right for them, if there is anything I could do better etc. So when Leah and Ben’s wedding was over, I asked them how they found our meetings. Here's what they said. How did you find our meetings? Absolutely AMAZING, so easy to speak to you. Bens's first comment was, “it was like having a family member or best friend round to the house.” Ben and I both felt like we had known you for years; even though we no longer require your services, you are always welcome round for a chat Working with Lean and Ben was a breeze right from the moment I first met them. During our meetings, I don't come armed with a clipboard and a list of questions. Instead, I rely on my experience to ask the right questions and gather the information to craft your perfect ceremony. I don’t take notes during our meetings until our final session, when I make sure I have all the nitty-gritty details correctly documented. I spend an hour after those meetings making detailed notes at home. For me, writing and listening are separate processes. While taking notes, I might miss a meaningful glance or a significant moment between you that could enrich your ceremony. I am catching up on my wedding posts from July. 29th July @barrabarn was for Heather and Richard Copsey. It was my first time out at Barra Barns, and what a stunning wedding location. The sun being out made it all the more beautiful; the views from the barn are stunning. I'd gotten to know Heather and Richard over a few months and couldn't wait for the wedding day. The couple are so chilled and in tune with each other that it was beautiful to watch them together on the big day. My last summer wedding of 2023 was at Meldrum House on August 31st. It was pure magic. I had the absolute pleasure of marrying Anouska and Donny, a beautiful couple inside and out💖 Spending time with them and their adorable son, Ashton, who captured my heart from the get-go, was a true privilege. We worked together to create their dream wedding day, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. 🌞 They envisioned an intimate outdoor wedding, and in true Scottish fashion, we had a backup plan for the unpredictable weather. But the wedding gods were looking down on us that day as we had blue skies and warm temperatures, allowing us to hold their ceremony outdoors. The wedding party and guests were an absolute riot, and Brendan had us in stitches. I even joked about hiring him to accompany me to weddings for guaranteed laughs! 😂 Ashton almost stole the show as he walked down the aisle, holding a precious little sign for his daddy. But nothing could have prepared Donny for the breathtaking sight of Anouska gracefully walking towards him. She was stunning. Getting to know this wonderful family has been such a joy, and I'm over the moon that they got to celebrate their special day exactly the way they envisioned it, surrounded by the people they cherish the most. 🎉💐 I met some lovely new vendors, and I’ll share them later. Let me explain.. This request appeared on a page I'm on this week and i wanted to take a few mins to explain something "Looking for a celebrant for my wedding in 2024. Preferably someone fun who doesn't read from notes!!! " I, like all the other celebrants around the world, work hard with our couples to create a ceremony that is so personal to them it holds lots of information, little secrets that they want to share with their families that there is no way we could remember it all. Our ceremonies last about 25- 30 mins each; we have names of family members in there, important dates to the couple, places they've been and a whole heap more information. And if there are rituals in the ceremony that include family members, that's even harder to memorise. And personally speaking, I write it, change it, write it again, and practice it before the day, so there is a fair bit that I do have in my memory bank, but no way I would ever remember everything that's in there for every single couple I marry. If we used a template, that might work, but I don't do templates, and neither do many of my celebrant colleagues. Every ceremony is written for you personally. What's it all about? I did this little wedding blessing last week for Maggie and Gary at the Winter Gardens in Aberdeen, surrounded by their family and friends, who were all so lovely. What a beautiful couple inside and out; they actually made my wee heart sing; they were that excited about their wedding blessing. You can tell from Gary's wee face how excited he was, and didn't they both look swell? Celebrants come from different backgrounds and may have varying levels of experience, training, and expertise. We all have different personal beliefs, cultural influences, and philosophies that shape how we approach our work. We are not all the same; we all look different, deal with our couples differently and even write differently. So my biggest tip would be to shop for your celebrant like you shop for your wedding dress or your venue. Find a few you like the look-off and have a chat with them all, see which one of us fits you perfectly. Your celebrant enters your lives for a short while so you need to be comfortable with them. Celebrant wedding day routine. I'm sure all us celebrants have a routine on a couples wedding day. Here's mine Get up and walk the dogs. I like to have the morning to myself. So I clean the house from top to bottom. Read through my ceremony. Make sure I have all my kit in the bags. Have something yo eat. Then chill for an hour. That's me in my chill hour now before today's ceremony. I like to be at the venue an hour and half before the ceremony starts so I can check in with the couple, get myself set up and mingle with the guests, get everyone relaxed. From Concept to Celebration Ally and Carol were referred to me by a couple that I'm marrying next year, but they didn't think we could do it in time.....3 months from start to finish. This was my surprise wedding in June this year, a 50th birthday party that was turning into a wedding, but the guests had no idea. But do it we did, and such lovely feedback from Mr and Mrs Parker. Do you or don't you? I've had the pleasure of doing a couple of huddles at my wedding ceremonies for couples that want some fun and to keep their guests on their toes - this ones called a huddle. You've probably seen it on youtube. It's where we ask the groom if he really truly wants to marry his partner; he says "hud on a min" and goes to confer with the people he has chosen for his huddle. It's hilarious and keeps the fun element in the wedding ceremony. So far, the grooms have always done it, and their partner knows it's in the ceremony. But nothing to say the brides can't do it, and keep it a secret between me and them until the day. That would be checking if they have your date free, booking them and then getting their contract back for your booking. So what do you need to check on the contract? They have your date right and the venue. Payment terms and payment schedule – do you pay a deposit now, and when is the final payment due? Cancellation and refund policy – what happens if they cancel, or you have to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances? Their liability and insurance details – do they have adequate coverage in case of any accidents or damage? What happens if they get ill on your date? Wedding Exhibitions Wedding Exhibitions are a fantastic way to meet lots and lots of vendors all in the one place. But you will come home with your head spinning 😊 So take a notebook with you and when you speak to a vendor that you think you might use, take their card, and put some wee notes in your book there and then so you don’t get confused over all the others you might speak to. You might even book them at the event if you’ve done a bit of research first. I think its always good to get a feel for them with a conversation. All of the exhibitions normally post who is attending as a vendor, so check out the list, do your research on those vendors, and then you’ll know who to go speak to. This week is about finding the right vendors for your wedding. Finding the right vendors for your wedding is a subject that many couples worry about, so this week, I’m going to share some tips on finding and choosing the right vendors. Research When I’m looking for someone to purchase or book something with, I always do a bit of research first. (Thank God for Google, cause I cannot for the life of me remember how we found vendors before Google) Normally I start by asking my friends first, do they know anyone or if they have heard about someone they could recommend. Wherever I find those recommendations, be it referral or online, then I go check out their reviews. If I read the reviews and I’ve still got questions about their product, then I’ll email them or call them. I like to use small local vendors rather than the big companies if at all possible, its good to support our local businesses. And once I’ve done the research and decided who I will use, I go ahead and book or order from them. Now you could spend a lot of time going, “Have I booked the right person/company” but I always go with my gut, and it very rarely lets me down.
