Thinking back to this brilliant showstopper! This was one of those occasions where the wedding had around 100 guests, but the bride and groom wanted a really tall, head-turning cake display with lots of flowers spilling down it. So we made the two taller bottom tiers real cake and everything above that was faux. All in a smooth buttercream! When I was asked by @tying_the_knot_raleigh to make a cake for a moody emerald green themed styled shoot at @oxbowestate , I knew it was time to create something spectacular. It was time to try some new techniques, build some new skills and create something fresh that my portfolio was thirsting for. It was time to have fun and make art! I thought I'd share the mind behind this creation and the sources of my inspiration. Starting with the hardest part - mixing fondant into a deep, rich emerald tone. Green is such a difficult color to achieve, especially when you need a dark shade. But starting with green fondant by @satin.ice made the task a lot easier....and my hands less stained 😁 I decided to go with a monochrome floral bas relief design which was inspired by the amazing @lima.cakes - her shoes are too big for me to fill, however it didn't stop me from making her my muse this time. 😊 I just love her work! She's sensational! The bottom tier didn't turn out as originally planned. I planned for a more flowy ruffled look, but because the crackles caused my ruffles to break I was forced to improvise and piece the broken panels on resulting in the end product you see here. I learned this crackle technique from @sugargeekshow. It starts with rolling out black fondant, then scorching the surface with a blow torch, painting it with gold dust highlighter from @evilcakegenius mixed with alcohol, then rolling it out again, causing all those beautiful crackles. To attach the ruffle panels, I prepared melting chocolate from @wiltoncakes and added black oil-based food coloring by @colour.mill and spread it on the back of each fondant panel before setting in place - this technique I learned from @kcakedessert - a game changer in gravity defying fondant! Thank you! Add a separator tier and a backsplash of 24k gold leaf by @slofoodgroup, and there you have it! A lovely and dramatic masterpiece. Photos by @casscophoto
