To @charlestontrust in Lewes today to see the Dorothy Hepworth and Patricia Preece exhibition. Dorothy was an excellent artist, and Patricia, her life partner, was good at promotion. Dorothy signed her work ‘Patricia Preece’ and Patricia promoted her work - a pretence that went on till the end of Dorothy’s life, even after Patricia’s death. She was an amazing portraitist particularly and here is a example of her work, with such likeness and character of the sitter. A most peculiar saga, especially if you add PP’s relationship with Stanley Spencer into the mix. Good morning I had a really wonderful afternoon @charlestontrust in Lewes yesterday facilitating a family collaborative zine workshop. Using the ‘Duos: The Art of Collaboration’ exhibition as a starting point, participants made zines about changes they wanted to see in the world, as well as some excellent fantastical story telling. 🪑🖌️ Our new upcoming exhibition, Radev, opens on 8th March and we are excited to announce that we have collaborated with @lukeedwardhall to bring to life the ethos and aesthetics of the Bloomsbury Group. Inspired by the Radev collection, and the people and places within its story, Hall has produced illustrations and an interactive interior space, which will be open to the public on Friday 8th March until September 1st. 🧑🎨 Luke Edward Hall is an artist, designer, and columnist based in Gloucestershire and London. His work takes an irreverent approach to British traditions of art and design. It explores an eclectic mix of references focused around the domestic interior and dress that is very much in tune with the ethos and aesthetics of the Bloomsbury Group. The Radev Collection, featuring work by iconic artists including Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani, will be displayed alongside work by Luke Edward Hall as well as The Wilson’s own collections. I was first introduced to the #bloomsburygroup when i first moved to #newyorkcity back in the late 1980s. A friend was working as a writer for a home interior magazine called #metropolitanhome - #lauraashley reintroduced a small range of fabrics designed by the #bloomsburygroup and i was given a few yards of fabric that was left over after the photo shoot. I think i draped that piece of fabric over every chair in every way possible. While the sun was bright in the sky yesterday I made a return visit to Charleston in Lewes. I'd only seen the building in the evening so being inside the sunlit interiors was a joy. Virginia Woolf, when she was Virginia Stephen, aged around 14, c1896. The necklace she’s wearing is strung from delicate, luminescent blue shells that shimmer slightly with a rainbow of light. She kept this unusual item of jewellery, and many years later my mother dug it out of a drawer to form part of the montage of Woolf-associated objects that adorned the cover of the paperback edition of the Diaries (Image 2 - my very shabby working copy). The very same necklace is now one of the numerous fascinating objects, garments and artworks to be seen at @charlestontrust ‘s brilliant exhibition, Bring No Clothes - Bloomsbury and Fashion, at Charleston’s new space in Lewes (till January). You can also see Virginia’s somehow rather touching round spectacles, Image 3, which also served to illustrate the paperback cover of Volume 2.
