Charleston with a dash of Savannah : Part 2 1. Striking a pose on Rainbow Row - the name given to a stretch of 13 candy-colored Georgian row houses. The structures date back to 1730, when they served as merchant stores on the wharf, a sketchy part of town at the time. Starting in the 1920s the buildings were restored and painted over in pastels. 2. No chance to get chubby eating at Chubby Fish, a buzzy new eatery where the line for a table starts at 5pm. If you get there huffing and puffing at 630 - as we did - you are cheerfully told the next available table is 9pm. The restaurant closes at 930 :) 3. Every borough in the city is toney, which makes walking long distances feel like less of a chore 4. The food scene in Charleston was a revelation. We went in expecting a lot of meat and classic southern food, but were pleasantly surprised to find a ton of seafood on offer. Here, Nupoor comes in between me and my baked oysters 5. Smiling for the camera after downing said oysters 6-7. One of the historic mansions we visited in Charleston - Nathaniel Russell House. This self-supporting spiral staircase is the highlight at this 200+ year old house. 8. Henry's Seafood, reputedly the oldest continuously running restaurant in Charleston, operational since 1932 9. For a relatively small city, there are a ton of hotels, most of which cater to the well heeled. 10. Rounding off our trip by getting some barbeque at Lewis. He is indeed the King. Five stars. Concluded the evening in Charleston with a delightful dinner at High Cotton. It was my first time dining there, and the restaurant lived up to its stellar reputation. Despite making last-minute reservations, I was fortunate to secure a table for a late dinner. I kicked off the meal with one of their signature cocktails, the Tommy Gun, a refreshing gin-based drink. The fried calamari appetizer was impeccably fried and accompanied by a delicious array of sauces. For the main course, I opted for the fresh catch, a tile fish served with fingerling potatoes and sautéed kale. I complemented the meal with Bill’s Bramble, a bourbon-based cocktail. For dessert, I indulged in the Chocolate Silk Pie paired with a double espresso and Amaro to conclude the evening on a high note. Charleston with a dash of Savannah : Part 1 Our domestic vacations tend to focus on accessing the great outdoors - with good reason. Living in the NYC area, you really miss wide-open spaces, and the US has so many spectacular national parks scattered all over the country. This year though, we decided to break our pattern and visit two mid-size cities in the South - Charleston in South Carolina, and Savannah in Georgia. Though similar on the surface, dig a little and some differences between the two cities emerge. Charleston is unmistakably wealthy - almost exclusively so - and played a central role both the Civil War and establishment of slavery in the US, while Savannah is smaller, feels less posh, but more artsy with greenery filled public squares and mammoth oak trees covered in Spanish moss. 1. Starting off in Charleston with a tour of the historic Magnolia Plantation. Here a couple contemplates an idyllic scene. The plantation was founded in the 17th century, and is one of several in the region that depended entirely on slave labour. 2. A common and iconic Southern sight - spanish moss hanging off an oak tree. It's a total misnomer - because it is neither Spanish, nor moss. It is in fact a flowering plant. The name “Spanish moss” actually originated as “Spanish beard.” Native American tribal people called it “itla-okla,” which meant “tree hair.” Some thought it resembled a conquistador’s long beard and began calling it “Barbe Espagnol,” or Spanish beard. Over time, Spanish beard became Spanish moss. 3-5. Our quick trip to Savannah began at the stunning Wormsloe Historic Site, another form plantation. The unmistakable highlight is a 2.5km long avenue of oaks. 6. Striking up a pose under the oaks 7. One of Savannah's icons - the 150 year old fountain at Forsyth Park 8. Our Charleston adventure begins in earnest, with a stroll down buzzy East Bay Street. 9.
