Comms part 2 If you could add communications without changing anything else, you’d probably hear a lot more sport dives talking. It’s complicated. To talk underwater, you need a room with air to speak into (and a place to put a mic) and your mouth must be free of anything. Early sport units, like the Wet Phone, used a “mouth mask,” which was basically a rubber pocket attached to the second-stage regulator and strapped over the mouth. However, these masks didn’t work very well and were soon replaced by better designs. Instead, the community has changed to a standard of a full-face mask with comms, which allows divers to breathe through their nose and mouth. There are a number of full-face masks on the market today, as well as courses to learn how to use them. Most masks have an oronasal pocket that keeps CO2 from building up, a built-in regulator, and a port to connect a communication device. Also, most masks move the air you breathe over the cover to keep it from fogging up. Full-face masks have some benefits over traditional masks for divers. They have a bigger field of view, don’t fog up, and are warmer and more comfortable than a bite mouthpiece. They also keep the diver’s lungs open if he or she passes out underwater, which is a big safety benefit. Fitting the mask and getting a good seal are very important. Equalization and clearing the mask can be harder. With practice, gas usage with a full-face mask is usually about the same, but it goes up a lot when you talk, so you need to be good at managing gas. Also, bailing out is a little harder, especially in cold water. To use a different way to breathe, the diver has to take off both his mask and his regulator at the same time. #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #nageurdecombat #2commando #greenberet #combatdiver #clearancediver #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #nzsas #comsubin #jægerkorpset #frømandskorpset #specialforces #danishspecialforces #irishrangers #korpscommandotroepen #dutchspecialforces #korpscommandotroepen

Comms part 1 There are two kinds of underwater communication systems: hardwired and wireless, or “through-water” communications (comms). Hardwire devices are basically waterproof intercoms that connect the diver to the surface. They are mostly used by divers on umbilical cables and in public safety situations with low visibility. They aren’t made to be used for sports. Through-water systems, on the other hand, use ultrasound (usually between 25 and 33 kHz) to send and receive messages through water, just like walkie-talkies or cell phones use radio waves. Because water is 784 times denser than air, it is a great conductor of sound energy. Many marine animals, especially cetaceans, use ultrasound waves to talk and find their way. On the other hand, radio waves do not travel through water, except at very low levels. Early through-water communications, like the Wet Phone, were made for the U.S. Navy in the late 1960s. They used circuitry from AM radios to encode voice talks (0.3–4 kHz) on an ultrasound carrier. But amplitude modulation (AM), which sends out three signals at once (a carrier signal and two sidebands), was hard to understand because the signals would get out of sync as they went through the water and were reflected off different objects. Also, divers couldn’t move much while talking underwater, or their words would sound jumbled. These problems didn’t help sales of the Wet Phone. Not until the mid-1980s, as electronics got smaller and smaller, was it possible to use advanced single-sideband modulation, which sends a single ultrasonic carrier signal and gets rid of the reflection and multipath issues of AM. Single-sideband quickly became the standard because it could be understood by almost everyone in good circumstances. #scubaproprofessionalservices #fullfacemaskdiving #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #combatdiver #clearancediver #specialairservice #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #nzsas #comsubin #jægerkorpset #frømandskorpset #specialforces #danishspecialforces #irishrangers #korpscommandotroepen #dutchspecialforces

Salt and ropes part 2 Because you will use this rope in dirty environments you should clean them at the end of every training cycle. Ropes that are kept clean maintain their capacity to stretch and live longer. Once a rope is dry it normally retains it stretch.   All you need to clean a climbing rope is a bucket, tub, or bag and warm water.  Make sure you have enough clean water for the rope to soak it up. They make rope cleaner buy you can just use mild detergent. But really all you need is water. You can also but in a front load washer machine. If you do that but it in a laundry bag and some say to daisy chain, it also. Again, only rope soap, mild or no soap. Nylon strands might become harmed when using rough cleaners. Fill a bucket or do this in your bathtub. Make sure the rope is submerged for at least 30 minutes. So that the detergent can remove all the dirt imbedded in the fibers, let the water churn for at least 15 minutes. Move the rope around to enhance its cleaning, you can also use a brush if needed. Drain the water and replace it with fresh water. Repeat this procedure until the water is clear. The rope should then be laid out on a plastic sheet and dried with a towel as the penultimate step. Allow it to air dry as well but avoid exposing it to direct sunlight. The quality and endurance of the rope are also maintained and increased by proper rope storage.   Ropes will lose some stretch if kept wet or exposed to direct sunlight. You should store your climbing rope somewhere cool, dry, and out of direct sunshine. Additionally, stay away from any areas where chemicals might splash upon it. The two worst things for rope are sunlight and chemicals like acid. (I know “what acid is bad no S%&T”). Rope can be exposed to gas it won’t hurt it that much as you would think, both are petroleum products.   Most groups and companies recommend storing ropes in the bags they come in. They help protect the ropes form sunlight and dirt. #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #nageurdecombat #combatdiver #grumec #specialforces #clearancediver #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert

The ultimate modern digital tool watch (D.T.W.) only costs around $40. For diving, jumping out of helicopters, rescuing spacemen, or just about anything else, you simply can’t go wrong with a G-Shock.  Issued to US Navy Divers, SEALs, the USAF Pararescuemen seen here, and a variety of other specialized units, the G-Shock has a longstanding history with the US Military and military organizations around the world.  Trained in emergency medicine, parachuting, scuba diving, rock climbing, small unit tactics, and arctic operations, Pararescuemen or PJs are the military’s elite rescue specialists. In this image, PJs wearing the DW9052 are seen alongside Royal Canadian Air Force Search and Rescue Technicians (SAR Techs). One of what I would consider the coolest jobs in the military, these guys are training for astronaut rescue and recovery operations in Cape Canaveral, Florida.  When you’re jumping into the sea to rescue astronauts, you need a capable watch. For $40 bucks, it doesn’t get any more capable than a G-Shock. For more on the intersection between astronaut recovery, special operations, and watches, check out my recent article on the @watchesofespionage Dispatch.  Is anyone else out there reaching for a G-Shock today?  Original Caption: “A multinational team of rescue specialists, including three members from the Royal Canadian Air Force Search and Rescue along with Pararescue Specialists from the 38th Rescue Squadron from Moody AFB, Ga., underwent rigorous training at the Rescue Force Qualification Course taught by 1 AF, Det 3 Rescue Instructor Cadre.” (Dated 2024)  . . . . . . #vintagediver #vintagerolex #vintagewatches #watchesofinstagram #watch #watchoftheday #watchphotography #navyseal #nsw #devgru #st6 #sf #nswdg #seal #military #wis #watchenthusiast #clearancediver #militarywatch #gshock #casiogshock #dw5600 #dw6600 #dw6900 #dw9052 #navydiver #casiof91w #casioa168 #pararescue

Clearance Divers onboard HMS Plymouth inspecting structural damage after it was hit by an Argentine air attack during the Falklands War. On 8th June 1982 the ship was alone in Falkland Sound, returning from a naval gunfire mission, when she was attacked by five Dagger fighter-bombers of Grupo 6 of the Argentine Air Force. Despite Plymouth firing her 20 mm guns and a Seacat missile, the aircraft dropped eight Mk82 500 lb bombs, four of which struck home. One Dagger was unable to release its payload due to a mechanical failure and another suffered light damage from shrapnel. All of the bombs failed to explode, but caused extensive damage to the ship. #diver #clearancediver #clearancedivers #frogman #royal-navy #royalmarines #scuba #rebreather #seal #navyseal #sas #sbs #fleetdivingunit #specialforces #specialoperations #fdu1 #navyeod #ranclearancedivers #eod #eoddiver #commandohubert #marinenationale #sdv #swimmerdeliveryvehicle #ww2 #marinerecon #bombfrog #rolex #tudor #cwc

Self-adjusting fin straps are one of the best ways to don and doff your fins. It also makes it easier to use different size booties. Steel spring straps are a relatively new product for fins. It was invented by cave divers that didn’t want their rubber straps breaking on them in the middle of a cave. So, they took screen door springs and made fin straps out of them. Typical rubber straps have a good chance of breaking at some point. If you are lucky, it will happen as you are putting them on before a dive, not in the middle of one. While you should always try and carry a spare strap on you, replacing a strap can be a pain in the middle of a dive. The spring strap helps avoid most of these problems. Available for many open heel fins, spring straps permanently mount to the fin. The spring straps typically attach using rust-resistant metal hardware. SCUBAPRO Steel Spring Straps are available for SCUBAPRO Jet fins, Twin Jet Max, Veloce fins, and the Seawing Nova fins. They are made from a High-grade marine steel. These straps can replace the traditional fin strap with the added benefits of being easier to don and doff, and they will compensate at depth for the pressure underwater. The flexible nature of the spring strap tightens as you descend to compensate for the crush on your boots, meaning your fins stay on at the exact tension you set them to at the surface. They are also a lot less likely to break when entering the water from a helicopter. The Steel Spring hele strap for the SCUBAPRO Jet fin has been added to 2020 Naval Aircrew Systems State of the Art Catalog. This allows SAR swimmers the ability to start using the Spring heels on their fins. Spring straps are strong springs with a rubber or nylon heel cover for comfort. Instead of having to adjust the tension every time you put them on like with traditional straps #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #sasr #usnrescueswimmer #usnavy #udtseal #navyseals #navyeod #combatdiver #comsubin #nageurdecombat #divegear #scubadiving #scubagear #diving

The SCUBAPRO’s FRAMELESS is the original frameless mask, and still the best. Its distinctive rectangular single-lens shape is classic, providing an excellent field of view on the periphery as well as straight ahead. Eliminating the frame, create a mask that sits closer to your eyes. This provides a broader field of view it also reduces the volume which makes it easier to clear. Also, since there is no frame, the buckles attach directly to the skirt. The soft silicone skirt on the FRAMELESS is comfortable and durable, and the double-edge seal feels good against the skin After decades on the diving scene, the original FRAMELESS continues to be the mask of choice among professional divers throughout the world The Frameless Gorilla has a slightly larger and wider lens in a matte finish The Gorilla Mask is a newer SCUBAPRO classic for professionals SCUBAPRO is always trying to set the bar for diving higher. The newest figures for the Frameless and Frameless Gorilla mask is the addition of the comfort strap adapter. This can be added onto any existing masks and adds several features to one of the most iconic masks ever made It allows the Frameless/ Frameless Gorilla mask to be used with the SCUBAPRO comfort strap. The Comfort Strap is similar to a ski goggle strap in design, and it clips right into the mask buckle adapter and offers a wide adjustment range. It is also a lot less likely to break mid-dive as it is a nylon strap The adapter also makes the mask non-magnetic for EOD use, as it removes all metal parts. It allows the masks to be used with the Odin helmet mask strap. The Odin system allows any mask with quick clips to be attached to any helmet that has the Ops-Core ARC type rail, to include Team Wendy and Galvion helmets. The Odin straps are perfect for any time you have to wear a helmet well diving. Let’s say you are turtle-backing to the point you are going to start your dive; it is cold; the seas are crap, and you are getting pushed around. You and your swim-buddy get to your start point as you are putting you mask on a penguin pops up out of the water. Your swim-buddy screams and throws his mask, and it sinks to the bottom. He goes by the theory of (travel light and mooch) so he doesn’t have an extra mask. But you were taught to have an extra mask, so you give him yours. A great place to keep an extra mask is in the good old M16 pouch. I like to keep it on the strap that holds your rebreather to your waist. It is right at hand and easy to find in the dark. It also keeps it off of your gun belt They are one of the best pouches ever made. It is designed so even if it gets unbuckled anything inside won’t dump out it can hold three fully loaded 30rd magazine upside down and not lose anything. I also put a fin strap in it. You can carry an extra mask or just the strap. If you are doing a longer dive and you have to cut back on the size of additional items, some people like to carry a smaller mask as their extra one. There are some excellent smaller masks out there. The Scubapro’s Steel Pro is a great mask if you need to carry something smaller. It uses the same comfort strap and can be tucked away in a small pocket without doing any harm to the skirts. Having an extra mask and/or mask strap will make your life a lot better, something else you can put in there is some defog, that you can put on your mask to keep it from fogging or if you are putting your extra one on that hasn’t been treated. Again, this will make your life underwater a lot better Jaws Spit is nice and thick and can be applied underwater, so it is ideal for use on a mask underwater, and it is small and can be kept in the same pouch as the extra mask. It is also good for use before a dive #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver #specialairservice #specialboatservice #sasr #nasar #kampfschwimmer #marinejegerkommandoen #commandomarine #commandohubert #buzostacticos #frogmencorps #fuerzadeguerranavalespecial

Clearance Divers in the early to mid 2000’s working on project ALAMANDA on HMS Spartan. In the late 1990s BMT and Kockums were contracted to design and build the first British Dry Deck Shelter (DDS) under project ALAMANDA. The aim of the project was to significantly enhance the Royal Navy’s capability to covertly deliver special forces and Clearance Divers from a submerged submarine. The design was heavily influenced by the experience of the US Navy, but was tailored to suit RN submarines. The DDS was fitted to HMS Spartan which required expensive modification before going to sea in 2004 where the system proved successful in service. Unfortunately, to the dismay of the RN, Spartan was decommissioned in 2006 and DDS capability was ‘gapped’ until the Astute class submarines came into play. To replace ALAMANDA, BAE Systems was awarded the contract for CHALFONT, which has since delivered the DDS that is fully integrated with the design of the Astute class submarines from the outset, rather than being an ‘add on’. 💣 🐸 #diver #clearancediver #clearancedivers #frogman #royal-navy #royalmarines #scuba #rebreather #seal #navyseal #sas #sbs #fleetdivingunit #specialforces #specialoperations #fdu1 #navyeod #ranclearancedivers #eod #eoddiver #commandohubert #marinenationale #sdv #swimmerdeliveryvehicle #ww2 #marinerecon #bombfrog #rolex #tudor #cwc

Finning part four Bent-Knee Cave Diver Kick With the complicated name, this technique is the go-to technique for technical divers and is the one that causes the least disturbance of the environment. The bent knees mean that the movement is minimal, with the entire kick coming only from a small movement in the hips, combined with a kick of the ankles. This means that propulsion is limited, compared to the two kicks above, but it also decreases strain and air consumption. The small movement means that it works well in cramped areas, such as inside wrecks and caves, and, when executed correctly, can minimize the amount of silt kicked up to almost nothing. For this reason, it is also the recommended technique for diving close a very silty bottom, like in a confined space, close to piers or around ships. The slow movement also means that this technique helps you slow down, making it useful for muck dives or other nature dives where you’ll be looking for small animal life. Because it is a very low-propulsion kick, this technique has its limitation when swimming against a current, though. This is a minimal-impact kick that is ideal for cramped environments and close to very silty bottoms, as well as helping you slow down during your dives and maximize your available air. The Jet Fin is the best fin for this, and with some practice, the Go Sport is that bad. I have some nerve damage so the fact that they are a little positively buoyant helps me keep my feet up. I am really starting to like the Seawing Supernovas for this also. #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #frogmencorps #nzsas #jednostkawojskowagrom #minedykkerkommandoen #montenegrosof #navyeod #marsof #giscarabinieri #scubaproeurope #comsubin #frenchforeignlegion

Finning part 3 Frog kick The frog kick looks very similar to the leg portion of the breaststroke from swimming. A large and wide kick that utilizes the leg’s full strength is a good, general technique for open-water diving, either in the water column or close to the bottom. Because the movement and propulsion aren’t continuous, good buoyancy technique is required, though. The movement here is horizontal, or close to it, meaning that there is minimal disturbance of the bottom when swimming close to the bottom, which will maintain the visibility for any divers that come after you. However, the kick’s width means that the kick isn’t recommended for caves or when diving close to a wall. This kick, combined with good buoyancy, will quickly become your go-to technique once you get used to it, and will likely decrease your air consumption significantly. The more adequately trimmed your position in the water, and the more you take advantage of the gliding phase before initiating the next kick, the more you’ll reduce your energy (and air) consumption. The powerful kick that can be extremely efficient, especially if you master the kick-and-glide aspect. Suitable for open-water diving in mild currents, in the water column, or close to the bottom. Not advisable in stronger currents or close to walls. The best fins for this are the new Seawing Supernovas and the good old Jet fins.   #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #frogmencorps #nzsas #jednostkawojskowagrom #minedykkerkommandoen #montenegrosof #navyeod #marsof #giscarabinieri #patrolpathfinder #comsubin

. #frogman #combatdiver #buzostacticos #navyseal #mergulhadoresdecombate #grumec #comanf #comandosanfibios #navyeod #boperj #forcasespeciais  #operacoesespeciais #forcerecon #clearancediver #clearancedivers #coesp #plongeesousmarine #mergulhador #operaçõesribeirinhas #nageurdecombat #mergulhadordecombate #cotpoliciafederal #eoddiver  #minentaucher #amphibiousreconnaissance #combatdiving #specialforces

Finning Techniques Part 1 Finning is the process of generating propulsion. In that sense, it is probably the most basic of all the diving skills, and one that most of us are already able to do when we first start diving. In particular, a better finning technique, choosing the right technique for the right circumstances, can increase your dive’s efficiency. This will decrease your air consumption, reduce physical fatigue, and extending your dives. Picking the right finning technique will also decrease the amount of silt you turn up. I am going to talk about four types of SCUBAPRO fins. The Jet fin, the Seawing Nova Gorilla, The Seawing Supernovas, and the Go Sport fins. The Jet Fin is the most wildly used fin in the world by profession divers, the SeaWing Supernova, the SeaWing Nova Gorillas (a stiffer version of the Seawing Nova that is great for people that who are strong kickers). The Go Sport fin is new to our line and is a tremendous all-around fin for diving, surface swimming like OTB and River and Stream crossing. There are three main fin kicks that any diver should know. These are flutter kicks, frog kicks, and bent-knee cave diver kicks. #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #nageurdecombat #2commando #combatdiver #grumec #specialforces #clearancediver #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #nzsas #comsubin #jægerkorpset #frømandskorpset #specialforces #danishspecialforces #irishrangers #korpscommandotroepen #dutchspecialforces #kikvorsman

Knowing your pace You should always know your pace, you will want to know how far each kick takes you, or you will want to see if it is the same as it has always been. If you have not been in the water in a long time or you have new fins. Here is how you go about finding/ checking your pace. It is basically the same as you would for checking your pace on land. You will need to have a place where you can do this. Next to a pier is a great place, as it will help save some steps. You will need the following gear. • One hundred yards of line or you can use a wall that is that long. You will still want to mark it. You will need. • A compass/ Navigation Board • A stopwatch • A slate so you can write your times down. It would is best if you put markers on the line to help mark your time and pace, generally at the quarter, the halfway, and three quarters. This way, it will give you an idea of how fast you are going and help you to adjust if needed. Put something that floats so that you can see it if the bottom gets steered up. Cyamlights, in a Gatorade bottle, works well for this. Secure the line to the bottom. If you have access to something stationary like a pier or dock, it makes it more comfortable to follow along with it. #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #nageurdecombat #2commando #combatdiver #grumec #specialforces #clearancediver #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #nzsas #comsubin #jægerkorpset #frømandskorpset #specialforces #danishspecialforces #irishrangers #korpscommandotroepen #dutchspecialforces #Kikvorsman

Dive Masks: Types and Styles Single pane lens - This type of dive mask has a single lens on the front and lenses on both sides of the face. Although you can’t see via the side lenses, you can detect movement. Masks with double pane lenses have two lenses in the front and lenses on either side of the face, similar to single pane lenses. As a result, there is a physical split in the front lens. No-Purge Dive Masks - These are the most common masks, whether they have a single or double pane lens. The nose of this style of dive mask is plain rubber with no opening Purge Dive Mask - These masks include a purge valve on the bottom of the nose. By merely breathing into the mask, a diver can clear the mask.  There are some  problems equalizing and free flowing at depth are two very regular complaints with this sort of mask. The difficulty in equalizing stems from a stiff nose and an inability to squeeze your nose effectively. Some divers have also claimed that the purge opening on their diving mask has suddenly started to leak water. As a result, they must constantly exhale to keep their mask clear. Of course, many individuals prefer the dive mask with purge, so it comes down to personal preference. Just be aware of the potential issues. Masks that cover the entire face of the diver are known as full face masks. Water is kept out, and the diver can breathe through a mouthpiece incorporated into the mask. Professional divers use this type the most, some recreational divers are starting to use them as you can use communications with them also. #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #sasr #kampfschwimmer #marsoc #marineraiders #usmcforcerecon #forcerecon #combatdiver #specialforces #afsoc #commandomarine #commandohubert #frogmencorps #nzsas #jednostkawojskowagrom #minedykkerkommandoen #rangers #cansofcom #scubaproodinhelmetstrap #navyeod #giscarabinieri #specialoperations #comsubin

Nothing like a little Arctic diving near Kodiak, Alaska to get you going on this #FrogmanFriday. 🐸 Besides just being awesome, there are a few things about these images that stick out to me:   1️⃣ One of my dudes in the first photo is wearing a G-Shock, which is common to see with modern SEALs. The watch appears to be the DW6900, a model with its own NSN (NATO Stock Number) that is still commonly issued to amphibious military units.
2️⃣ At least a few of these operators are wearing WETSUITS. In February. In Alaska. I know these guys are built different, but still…  🥶
3️⃣ It’s also interesting to see the wide array of different types of diving equipment being used. The SEALs have their Dräger LAR V rebreathers while some of the other guys are wearing the US Navy Mk 20 full-face scuba mask with doubles. There is more than one way to skin an omelet, as they say.
 Diving in cold water is one of those things that looks cooler than it feels in many cases, but I can’t help but think these guys are having just a little bit of a good time… Are there any ice or just plain cold water divers out there? 🔱 🤿 🌊 🧊 🇺🇸 Original Caption: “U.S. East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare Operators (SEALs), U.S. Army Green Berets from 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), and Norwegian Naval Special Operations Commandos dive in Arctic waters near Kodiak, Alaska, Feb. 26, 2024, during Arctic Edge 24.”  . . . . . . . #vintagediver #vintagerolex #vintagewatches #watchesofinstagram #watch #watchoftheday #watchphotography #navyseal #nsw #devgru #st6 #sf #nswdg #seal #military #wis #watchenthusiast #clearancediver #kampfschwimmer #militarywatch #gshock #casiogshock #dw5600 #dw6600 #dw6900 #dw9052 #navydiver #casiof91w #casioa168

Some things don't change......top pic is Royal Navy Clearance Diver Breathing Apparatus, used in the 1958 film 'The Silent Enemy' Bottom pic is me using the same set, bar a couple of minor modifications, in Kuwait in 1991.....the set was in use for about 40 years! Best set I've ever used. Streamlined, comfortable, easy to set up, use and maintain. Rigged for O2 on demand, there were no cylinders on the back, so ultra Streamlined, and able to do an hour totally undetectable, that would equate to about 2km underwater #navyfrogman #clearancediver #frogman #navydivers #navyseals #specialforces #commandohubert #decimamas #uominirana #militarydiver

Dive Logs When you first started diving, you were taught to log all your dives. A typical entry consists of the dive location, date, time, duration of the dive, depth, water temperature, wetsuit with thickness, equipment, and other facts relevant to the dive. Was the suit suitable for that water, did your foot cramped with the fins you used and other items like that. First getting to a team and being told to keep notes on everything so you could look back when you haven’t done something for a while, and it could help remind you the little things you might have forgotten. You will always know what thickness of wetsuit to wear, but the logbook helps the little things like maybe you use a 1mm rash guard to help keep you warm but still allow for good mobility. As we went away from diving, there are a lot of old skills and habits that have been lost. As we start to use more advanced items in the water from sonar to Heads Up Dive Computers some necessary skills have been lost. Some groups go longer durations in-between dives, it is a great idea to write stuff down, so you will remember how you had your gear set up. This can go for all your forms of training. With technology today you can use your dive watch, and it does all the work for you I think every dive company has an app that you can download your dive. Those are great until they don’t work, or you are in a place you can’t use them. Remember to consider what you are doing and wearing. If the last time you had a 3lb sledge on your back and now you have 5lb one this can help. It will also help you by writing down what you used to make the sledge neutral buoyant. It never hurts to keep a paper logbook, so you can write in it and store it with your dive gear this way it is always there if needed. This will help if you don’t or can’t have your phone on you. Write down if you had a problem with a piece of equipment, Say Nav board #3 was off and now you are handed that same one you will know to switch it out or make sure it was fixed. #scubaproprofessionalservices #publicsafetydiver #frogman #combatswimmer #sbs #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver# #navydiver

Illumination for diving part 1 What is the best illumination for diving? I say illumination because it isn’t always about using a flashlight, especially as a combat diver. There are a few different types I want to discuss. So, what is needed by a combat diver? First is a way to see your gauges and navigation devices like your attack board. Usually, you tape a chemlight onto your attached board or your gauges well. First, you let them sit in the sun to charge. But you will always have another way to see them. Typically, a chemlight is taped up so it is only visible on the device.  The main problems with them are you can’t turn them off, they might not work, and they can float. To help with the floating, try rapping a little solder around it before you tape it up. This will help it sink if it gets lost. Another option for a chemlight is to use an S&S V lite. I am going to sound like they are paying me, but I am not. I like what they have when it comes to lights. You can cut them down so the light is just where you need it. If you look at the second picture, there is a @patriot3 micro navigation board, and that is what they use, and it is excellent. They can be turned off and will sink if dropped. Yes, they are battery-operated, but they last a long time. I also know people will say you can’t change the batteries out, but. Yes, I know nothing is perfect, but this is the best option. #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #nageurdecombat #2commando #combatdiver #grumec #specialforces #clearancediver #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #nzsas #comsubin #jægerkorpset #frømandskorpset #specialforces #danishspecialforces #irishrangers #korpscommandotroepen #dutchspecialforces #Kikvorsman

As we’ve proven a few times on this page, even a $15 watch can be a dive watch if you have the right attitude. 😎 If you don’t believe me, ask this Royal Thai Navy Diver and his Casio F91W, probably the least expensive watch that’s actually worth buying. Jumping over to his US Navy co-tender, this particular diver is wearing a Casio G-Shock DW9052, one of only four G-Shock references to ever receive an NSN or NATO Stock Number for easy issue to US Military forces.  As we sneak up on Watches and Wonders, the world’s largest luxury watch release event, it’s important to remember that watch collecting as a hobby doesn’t have to be expensive. Cost doesn’t always equal capability. 💪 💰 I’ve seen the F91W do some crazy things, and I have more content coming where we’ll put this legendarily cheap digital watch under even more pressure…  Did anyone else reach for a digital tool watch (D.T.W) today? 🔱 🤿 🌊 🇺🇸 🇹🇭 Original Caption: “U.S. Navy Divers take the MK-21 diving helmet off Royal Thai Navy diver Petty Officer 1st Class Sarawut after completing a Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Thailand 2010 training dive.” (Dated 2010)  . . . . . . . #vintagediver #vintagerolex #vintagewatches #watchesofinstagram #watch #watchoftheday #watchphotography #navyseal #nsw #devgru #st6 #sf #nswdg #seal #military #wis #watchenthusiast #clearancediver #kampfschwimmer #militarywatch #gshock #casiogshock #dw5600 #dw6600 #dw6900 #dw9052 #navydiver #casiof91w #casioa168

Currents affect diving conditions so much that you must plan your entry and exit locations, route, and equipment. Know before you go in if there are currents If the diving location has a strong current, it may be best to select another site or postpone the dive. Drift diving is used in gentle currents. You’d need a surface supervisor to see the divers and bring the boat around for retrieval. You should also carry a surface float, SMB, and/or whistle. This will assist the boat crew keep track of the group and spot you if you need to surface. Downstream is easier than upstream. Consider the current direction while planning a drift dive. Swimming against the stream uses more energy, air, and muscles. If you get caught in a stream when diving, swim as hard as you can against it. Even if you’re not making much progress, this will protect you from becoming lost Moving diagonally allows you to combat the current without expending as much energy as swimming directly against it Surface and depth currents differ Current speed and direction vary with depth Various currents exist The ebb will reverse after the flood Currents can hinder underwater navigation If you plan to let the current carry you be aware of its speed If you’re not careful of your speed you may miss your exit. When swimming against the river a compass is unreliable Even if you swim straight, the tide will drive you diagonally. Kick strokes can’t measure current distance When swimming against the current, you’ll go further Currents slow at their bottom Staying near the bottom is simpler when swimming against the stream. Currents can affect your equipment Current pressure can affect snorkels and regulators Reduce your workload Tuck your gauges and regulators, hold your camera close to your thigh, and swim low along the reef in current This reduces drag and effort Divers often add weight to their gear to counteract currents lifting effect #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver

Boat helmets part 2 One of the problems is the weight that is associated with a ballistic helmet. You are also adding a lot of stress to your neck because of the weight of the helmet, the NODs, the lights, everything you put on there, and yes, even the cool guy patches add weight.  Before someone says, “No, that is not true”. When Ops-Core made their second-generation maritime helmet, they used a new material to save weight. When they put all the Velcro that guys wanted back on it so they could add patches and whatever, just the Velcro alone added all the weight back that was saved by using a new ballistic material. One of the helmet systems I like the most, and I say system because it is really a system, is the Ops-Core FTHS Coxswain.  The FTHS Coxswain Helmet is a modular, scalable helmet platform that provides blunt impact protection and 9mm and frag protection when worn in conjunction with the ballistic applique that can be added right before you hit a target.  It is designed for non-ballistic bump protection when on a boat or vehicle to help reduce the weight on your head. It also has a removable mandible that is great for protecting your face from the wind and cold of the winter and if the sea’s state is bad from stuffing your face in the boat’s console. As a former boat and team guy with neck and back issues, I think this is a great platform if used correctly. #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #nageurdecombat #2commando #combatdiver #grumec #specialforces #clearancediver #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #nzsas #comsubin #jægerkorpset #frømandskorpset #specialforces #danishspecialforces #irishrangers #korpscommandotroepen #dutchspecialforces #Kikvorsman

A Clearance Diver in the late 2000’s being awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery by Commander-in-Chief Fleet, Admiral Sir Trevor Soar, for repeatedly diving into the engine room of the ice patrol ship HMS Endurance to try and repair a valve that had opened unexpectedly, causing a major flood and near-loss of the ship. The CD was eventually forced back by the torrent of water but had tried three times to get to the valve despite the lack of lighting and the number of obstacles in the compartment. HMS Endurance was on an 18-month deployment in the South Atlantic when her engine compartment flooded during maintenance on 16 December 2008. A mayday warning was sent out after the ship lost all propulsion while in the Straits of Magellan and the damage control teams were put into action to pump out the water and stem secondary flooding. The anchor was lowered and caught to stop the ship drifting toward land and potentially grounding, and she was then towed to Punta Arenas in Chile before later returning home to Portsmouth. The citation reads: You demonstrated outstanding courage and fortitude in the most hazardous conditions. Repeatedly attempting to stop sea water entering the engine room, you displayed a complete disregard for your own safety in order to save your ship. Throughout every stage of this emergency, your selfless bravery and unwavering commitment were remarkable and in the finest traditions of the Service.💣 🐸 #diver #clearancediver #clearancedivers #frogman #royal-navy #royalmarines #scuba #rebreather #seal #navyseal #sas #sbs #fleetdivingunit #specialforces #specialoperations #fdu1 #navyeod #ranclearancedivers #eod #eoddiver #commandohubert #marinenationale #sdv #swimmerdeliveryvehicle #ww2 #marinerecon #bombfrog #rolex #tudor #cwc

Helmets for driving a boat part 1 There are a few reasons, the number one being safety. Depending on the sea state, it's nice to know that your melon would be protected if you get knocked around. Number two is you are out at night, and you want to use NODs. A helmet gives you a great, stable platform. If you don’t need helmet-type bump protection, the Ops-Core skull crusher/skull-mounted system is excellent for this, or, say, using NODs in any environment when you don’t need ballistic protection, like patrolling in the jungle when the protecting from the helmet might be overshadowed by overheating from wearing a helmet. Sorry, back to boats. The theory behind wearing a helmet when driving a boat is that you have a system for protecting your head and mounting items like lights, comms, and signaling devices like strobes. Before you run out and get a helmet, first decide what you want it to do and what you will use it for. You can use bump protection. Just about all helmets will work. But you will need something better if you want to add lights, strobes, and communications. You might also want ballistic protection. #frogman #combatswimmer #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #nageurdecombat #2commando #combatdiver #grumec #specialforces #clearancediver #sasr #kampfschwimmer #commandomarine #commandohubert #nzsas #comsubin #jægerkorpset #frømandskorpset #specialforces #danishspecialforces #irishrangers #korpscommandotroepen #dutchspecialforces #kikvorsman

Boat Rides Part 3 Lastly, when you get out of the water, you should have something to eat and or drink. I will sound like an old man, but a thermos with hot chocolate or soup is so good when you are cold. Start to warm yourself from the inside. This will help keep you warm, and if you are out and tired, this is a lot better than eating an energy bar that is cold and hard. Some bite-size snickers or something like that is good. They are also great for winter warfare or survival situations. You can drop a bite-size snickers bar into some hot water, and BAMB, you have a good soup. This is a great pick me up. Now that you are warm and dry, it’s time to get ready for that long boat ride home. The best ride is always in the back whenever you are on a boat. There is less movement and less wear and tear on you. If you are in a Zodiac/ Wing, again try and sit in the back. If you have a stadium seat, take some one-inch tubular nylon, tie it around the middle, put a carabiner on it. Now you can clip it into the boat, make sure there is no slank so that you can sit in it, and it will help hold you into the boat and help keep you in place and give you a better ride. This is great after a long night of being cold and wet on a zodiac/ wing boat. #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #sasr #nzsas #kampfschwimmer #marinejegerkommandoen #commandomarine #commandohubert #buzostacticos #frogmencorps #fuerzadeguerranavalespecial #shayetet13 #gruppooperativoincursori #kustjägarna #jednostkawojskowagrom #minedykkerkommandoen #maritimes #jtf2 #montenegrosof #navyeod #mya_hcg #marsof #armydiver

Boat ride PT2 If you can change out of your wetsuit, make sure you do that. If you can’t put on a Rain gear top and bottom. Rain gear is water and wind proof. When you first get out of the water, you might be hot, but you will get cold if you are in for a long boat ride. If you have a mustang suit, they are easy to change into. Try putting on a base layer of wool, as you won’t be completely dry, and wool helps keep you warm even when wet for your hands and feet. Sealskinz #sealskinz makes some great socks and gloves. They are water and windproof, I have walk thru the water, up past my ankles and they kept my feet warm, and this was in Chile in the winter. I also like to use dive gloves that are a size or two bigger and put a wool liner on, then put dive gloves on over them. You can put the Sealskinz on and if needed put your dive booties back on over them. Glacier Gloves #glaciergloves make some of the best winter gloves. I say that because their gloves are designed for working/ hunting in a cold, wet environment. I started using them on deployment in Kodiak, I could have a sheet of ice on me and still my hands would be warm. A wool hat with a fleece liner in it for your head. Again, a good jacket, a rain jacket, or something like that, go for something oversized. So you can put it on over your gear. Look at commercial fishermen; they are out in the bad weather all day. 📸by @n_betts #scubaproprofessionalservices #frogman #combatswimmer #navydiver #militarydiver #navyseals #clearancediver #specialboatservice #sasr #nzsas #kampfschwimmer #marinejegerkommandoen #commandomarine #commandohubert #buzostacticos #frogmencorps #fuerzadeguerranavalespecial #irishranger #shayetet13 #gruppooperativoincursori #kustjägarna #jednostkawojskowagrom #minedykkerkommandoen #maritimes #cansofcom #montenegrosof #navyeod #marsof
