On plonge dans le XXème siècle, pendant la seconde guerre mondiale... à moins qu'un saut dans le passé nous fasse ressurgir à la fin de la première guerre mondiale ? Notre beau et charismatique personnage principal essaiera donc de comprendre ce qui s'est passé, sous la vigilence de la belle Rebecca, et il n'a pas fini d'être surpris, tout comme nous... 😏 J'aime toujours autant la plume de l'autrice qui a un style hors du commun et parvient toujours à trouver les bons mots. Quand à l'histoire, elle est addictive et se lit rapidement. James Hickey. My Mum's maternal Grandfather, was in the Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry in World War 1. He was injured at the battle of Passchendaele and lost his leg. Wilfred Jones. My paternal Grandfather, was in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in World War 2 and landed on Sword Beach on D-Day. This is the incredible true story of a housewife turned spy, born on this day in 1912. She survived Ravensbrück concentration camp and was the first woman to be awarded the George Cross by the UK ⬇️ Odette Hallowes was born Odette Brailly in France. Her father was tragically killed at Verdun just before the Armistice during the First World War. After growing up in France, she moved to Britain with her first husband in the early 1930s. From there she was recruited by the Special Operations Executive. In 1942 she was sent to France under the command of Captain Peter Churchill - he headed up the Spindle SOE network. Both Odette and Peter were hunted by the Gestapo, captured, and interrogated. Odette was also tortured by her captors. Odette refused to answer questions from her interrogators. She stuck to the same fabricated story throughout - Peter was Winston Churchill's nephew and she was his wife. She was sentenced to death on two accounts in June 1943, to which Odette reportedly said, 'You will have to make up your mind on which count I am to be executed, because I can only die once.' Odette then endured horrific conditions at Ravensbrück, but the Churchill lie eventually saved her - she was handed over to the Americans towards the end of the war. Her bravery also protected the identities of other SOE agents. Later, she gave evidence at the Hamburg Ravensbrück Trials, and in 1947 she married Peter Churchill. A film was made in 1950 about her WW2 experiences, which carries an end title card with her words: 'It is with a sense of deep humility that I allow my personal story to be told. I am a very ordinary woman to whom a chance was given to see human beings at their best and at their worst. I knew kindness as well as cruelty, understanding as well as brutality. My comrades, who did far more than I and suffered far more profoundly, are not here to speak. It is to their memory that this film has been made and I would like it to be a window through which may be seen those very gallant women with whom I had the honour to serve.' Startrampe der Fi 103 oder auch „V1“ Die Fi 103 war der erste jemals eingesetzte Marschflugkörper - ein unbemanntes Flugzeug zum Transport von fast einer Tonne Sprengstoff. Der Start erfolgte von einer Startrampe (Walter-Schlitzrohr-Schleuder), welche die Flugbombe auf eine Geschwindigkeit von mindestens 370 km/h beschleunigte. Erst dann konnte ihr Pulsstrahltriebwerk (Argus-Schmidt-Rohr) selbständig den nötigen Schub erzeugen. Die Startrampe bestand aus acht Rohrsegmenten von jeweils 6 m Länge, die von einem Rahmen umschlossen auf acht Stahlgitterstützen ruhten. Für die hier im November 1943 fertiggestellte Feldstellung Il wurde ein 6 m hoher künstlicher Hügel aufgeschüttet und in der vorgelagerten Düne ein Einschnitt gegraben. Além de causarem acidentes de trabalho, conta-se também que utilizando estilingues para atirar pequenas pedras nos olhos de suas vítimas e ainda faziam com que conversas pessoais vazassem para todo o departamento. Apesar de serem descritos como invisíveis, há quem diga que possuíam a aparência de pequenas criaturas brancas, com um tufo de cabelo na cabeça e utilizando uma espécie de roupa de gola franzida. Die Alliierten eroberten das Flugfeld, doch die Deutschen beschlossen weiterzukämpfen, um den Alliierten schwere Verluste zuzufügen. Jedoch wurde, aufgrund eines schweren Gewitters welches eine nicht unterstützte Verteidigung für einen langen Zeitraum nicht möglich machte, die Stellungen geräumt und verschiedene Gebäude und Brücken gesprengt, um den alliierten Vorstoß zu verlangsamen. Trotz allem wurde Rimini am 21. September befreit. The Junkers Ju 188 "Rächer" (avenger) was a German Luftwaffe high-performance medium bomber built during World War II, the planned follow-up to the Ju 88 with better performance and payload. It was produced only in limited numbers, due both to the presence of improved versions of the Ju 88, as well as the increasingly effective Allied strategic bombing campaign against German industry and the resulting focus on fighter production. By 1942, it was becoming clear that Junkers' candidate for the important Bomber B program, the Ju 288, was not going to be ready soon and that the Ju 88 was increasingly at the mercy of rapidly improving RAF and Soviet VVS fighters. The RLM finally decided that even the small gains in performance in the Ju 88B were worth considering and asked Junkers for an improved aircraft as the Ju 188. In October 1942, the Ju 188 was chosen for production. Band of Brothers, Stephen E. Ambrose, wyd. Simon&Schuster “Band of Brothers”, w polskim przekładzie “Kompania braci”, to chyba jedna z najbardziej znanych pozycji o drugiej wojnie światowej, do czego w znacznym stopniu przyczyniła się jej serialowa adaptacja HBO. W końcu i ja postanowiłem przekonać się o co tyle hałasu. Książka to zapis szlaku bojowego kompanii E, 506 pułku, amerykańskiej 101 dywizji powietrznodesantowej. Losy jednostki śledzimy od jej sformowania, przechodzimy przez wszystkie operacje, w których żołnierze kompanii brali udział, aż po demobilizację i powojenne losy weteranów. Tak się złożyło, że bohaterowie “Band of Brothers” walczyli w jednych z najbardziej znanych bitew wojny, co czyni książkę wyjątkowo ciekawą. Ambrose świetnie wyważył akcenty. Czytelnik otrzyma trochę kontekstu historycznego, ekspresywny, dynamiczny zapis walk uzupełniony wypowiedziami weteranów oraz obraz żołnierskiego życia “od kuchni” - wszak służba wojskowa to nie tylko walka, czemu autor poświęca wiele miejsca. Język książki jest prosty, żywy, co czyni lekturę przyjemną. Coś dla siebie znajdą zatem nie tylko miłośnicy historii. Pozytywnie zaskoczyła mnie transparentność Ambrose’a w kontekście procesu twórczego. W książce znajdziemy cały rozdział dedykowany temu, jak “Band of Brothers” powstawała, gdzie autor zwraca uwagę na niebezpieczeństwa pisania na podstawie wspomnień i kompromisy, na jakie musiał pójść, by wydanie książki w ogóle było możliwe. Czytelnik ma zatem świadomość, że nie do końca obcuje z literaturą faktu. To, czego mi zabrakło, to mapy. Ambrose nie stroni od opisów stricte militarystyczno-geograficznych, dlatego aż prosiło się o dodanie kilku mapek ułatwiających czytelnikowi rozeznanie się w sytuacji. Niestety, musiałem posiłkować się w takich przypadkach internetem. Autorowi zdarzało się także palnąć jakąś, ahistoryczną bzdurkę (więcej w komentarzu). Te drobne niedociągnięcia nie rzutują jednak negatywnie na odbiór książki. “Band of Brothers” to świetna opowieść o losach zwykłych ludzi rzuconych w wir wielkiej historii, zdanych często wyłącznie na siebie i kompanów w okopie. Pozycja będzie na pewno doskonałym uzupełnieniem serialu.

Japanese pilot Nobuo Fujita presented his family’s sword to the town of Brookings, Oregon in 1962, twenty years after he dropped bombs nearby in the only foreign air attack on the US mainland during World War II. Fujita was serving as a Flight Officer in 1942 when he volunteered to bomb the American West Coast following the famed Doolittle Raid on Japan. His Yokosuka E14Y floatplane was transported by Imperial Navy submarine I-25 to just 20 miles off the coast before surfacing and launching. His mission was to firebomb the forest outside of Brookings to cause the US Navy to divert resources to defend the US coastline. Fujita flew two missions on September 9th and 29th, dropping four thermite bombs. But recent rains in the area meant that the bombs failed to ignite any major fires, and just left smoldering craters at the impact site. Two decades later, members of the Brookings Jaycees Club invited him to return as a way of mending the relationship between the two formerly adversarial countries. The citizens of Brookings were hotly divided on the issue, as many of them remembered the attack, or were veterans of the war in the Pacific. Fujita brought his family with him, along with the 400-year-old Fujita clan katana. During his week-long visit he presented it to the town and was named the Grand Marshal of their annual Azalea Festival. He returned to Brookings several times in the 1990s, including to mark the 50th anniversary of his attack by planting a redwood sapling at the bombing site. It is now a landmark in the Rogue River - Siskiyou National Forest. A few days before he passed away from lung cancer in 1997, Fujita was made an honorary citizen of Brookings. Some of his ashes were scattered at the bombing site. Afterwards, his daughter remarked that in 1962 he’d planned to make amends by using the sword to commit seppuku if he learned the residents of Brookings were still angry with him.
