About 2,000 displaced people from Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Donetsk arrived into Lviv yesterday. . Some of these refugees were put up at the school we have been supporting. Due to a lack of clean running water, many of them have not been able to properly wash themselves for a month. We quickly organized for some wash basins for them to be able to wash properly. . We have been working hard on 👟“Project Sneakers”👟 , to buy new shoes for the orphans we have been supporting from Bila Tserkva. . 👟Firstly, our awesome volunteer, Snizhana, bought 16 pairs of sneakers in Poland 👟Then, with Yulia’s help, arranged delivery from Poland, over the border, to Lviv 👟There we collected the sneakers and distributed them to the orphans at the school. . This is Taras. We posted about his wife Ivanka and son Myroslav recently. Taras spent 3 nights in line getting them to the Polish border, before returning to his parent’s village. 💔 . He is doing all he can to help locally in the meantime. 💙He is helping families who arrive to Lviv without a place to stay, by putting them up his local village church rectory and community hall. There they have comfortable accommodation and a play are for children. Hundreds of people have passed through already on their way to the polish border, and Taras helps get them there. And the flow has not stopped. 💛He has helped Yulia with translation for news crews, and made some arrangements for TV crews from Belgium also. . 🌟Your support allows Taras to volunteer, but also helps support Ivanka and Myroslav while they shelter in Poland, awaiting their return to Ukraine. 🌟 . Today we made one of our more significant donations. . A children’s hospital in Lviv was in dire need of a new computer and printer. This hospital treats almost 65,000 children every year, in more than 20 specialities. With more and more refugees flooding into Lviv, mostly mothers and children, this kind of care is more essential than ever. Many arrive sick, either from prior illnesses, or from the stress of the war and the journey. . Another day. Another family. Another story. . We met this family by the Lviv train station. They were from Mariupol, four of them - Zhenya and Natalia, eldest son Roman, younger Danya. They sheltered in their basement for 3 weeks, hearing the bombs fall around them. "The last bombs that fell nearby were the most horrible." . They were lucky that some Turks who worked in Mariupol took the family with them to Berdyansk. They were taken by volunteers to Zaporozhye in a convoy of buses where they were shot at. They finally arrived in Lviv from Zaporizhia by train. . Now they have found an acquaintance and are going to stay with them, to be close to someone they know. . 2/2 Ivanka's Story. "A few more hours passed. Ukrainians were taken away by bus and brought to a volunteer point. There were rooms for us to rest, a lot of humanitarian aid. Dozens of people offered to take me where I needed to go, and provide housing. . Now we live with a family of Poles, whom we met here. They are very kind to us and always support us. We celebrated Myroslav’s birthday, without his father, Taras. In general, in the city where we are now, many Ukrainians have arrived, and volunteers and the government are helping everyone in need. I feel that my son and I are safe, but the level of anxiety for family and friends is very high. . I read the news around the clock. When there are air raid sirens in my home city, I don't sleep and monitor the news until it's over, and then I exhale. . 1/2 Ivanka fled Ukraine with her young son, Myroslav, leaving her husband Taras behind. She is in Poland while her husband supports the war effort in Lviv. Here is her story: . “After Russia's invasion of our country, we made the most difficult decision of our lives - to go abroad for a while. I understood that with a small child in tow, I could not help in this war. My husband, Taras, would drive us to the Polish border where we would cross to safety, and he would remain. . The queues at the borders were long. It took us 3 days waiting in line to reach the crossing point. For these three days we lived in our car, listening to the news from of the war on the radio, around the clock. From time to time, sirens sounded, asking us to turn off the headlights so Russian planes could not see us. . For safety, I padded the windows near my child with a rubber play mat. Just in case. The moment came when my eleven-month-old son and I had to cross the border, and my husband had to stay behind, to return to Lviv. "It's for his safety, you're the best mom. Celebrate his birthday well for both of us,” my husband told me. "I'll be back by then," I replied. Of course, I cried, and I cry sometimes even now. The border guards helped me with my things, I tried to calm my son. I did not know what awaited me after crossing the border. . . . . . . . Since the war started in Ukraine, and many Ukrainians began to flee west as bombardments hit much of eastern and central Ukraine. Lviv in particular has seen a huge influx of Ukrainian refugees. . 🌟We opened up our office in central Lviv as a shelter to a family – a mother and 4 children.🌟 . Desks were pushed aside. We bought them bedding and mattresses, made makeshift beds, and have given them full run of the office as their living space. Some of you might recognise the kitchen from Taras Sabadash 's cooking classes. Kyrylo was even been teaching them English on our office whiteboards. We have provided a few basic necessities for them, but otherwise they are happy to have a roof over their heads. . . . 1/3 Over the last couple of weeks, we have been helping a group of children and their carers from the Cheburashka orphanage, who had to be moved from Bila Tserkva, near to Kyiv, after increased bombing in the area. . They sheltered in the basement of their school for 5 days as shelling proceeded, before making the decision to flee for safer ground. . It is a classical example of wooden Hutsul sacral architecture. The church was a preaching place for the most outstanding patriarchs in the history of Ukrainian religious life. It continued to function even during Soviet times when most of the places of worship were closed or destroyed as a result of anti-religious state politics. 😲 The great ancient tradition connected to the Kryvorivnya church is a well-known tradition of caroling. It begins after the Christmas liturgy. Men in traditional Hutsul festive costumes leave the church and line up. Some have Hutsul axes, trembitas, horns or violins in their hands. After that, a festive procession around the church begins. A ring is formed around the temple. The carol resounds a bit among the mountain tops: it subsides, then regains strength. Then the priest comes out of the church and blesses the carollers.✨ Kryvorivnya carollers are known all around Ukraine and after Christmas, they usually go on a tour around Ukraine to spread the Christmas spirit from the Carpathians to the entire country.🌟 Christmas celebrations in the Carpathian mountains are unique and different from how it is celebrated in other regions of Ukraine. #SpiritualSunday Stunning St. Mary's church in Krakow! ✨ After the Wawel Cathedral, St. Mary’s Basilica is the most important church in the ancient city of Krakow. The construction of the temple was started in late 13th century on the foundation of a former Romanesque church. The new temple was consecrated around the year 1320. Over the centuries, the church underwent numerous reconstructions of both its exterior and interior. The extended single-aisle presbytery under a stellar vault was built in late 14th century. The light comes inside through the high stained glass windows. Only three windows have been preserved from the original medieval stained glass. The rest is from the 19th century and was created by individuals such as Stanisław Wyspiański and Józef Mehoffer. The 18th century saw the church equipped with Baroque aesthetics. The work was supervised by Francesco Placidi, who created the Baroque galilee leading to the church in mid-18th century. The multisided architectural form, crowned with an openwork tower, imitates the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The wooden door of the galilee is decorated with sculpted heads of prophets, apostles, and Polish saints, which were created in 1929 by Karol Hukan. The church cemetery was deconstructed in early 19th century and its former grounds are now known as St. Mary’s Square. St. Mary's church also served as an architectural model for many of the churches that were built by the Polish diaspora abroad, particularly those like St. Michael's and St. John Cantius in Chicago, designed in the so-called Polish Cathedral style. The church is familiar to many English-speaking readers from the 1929 book The Trumpeter of Krakow by Eric P. Kazimierz in Krakow is a special place developed over many centuries as a Christian-Jewish neighborhood ✡🕎 Jews arrived here in the mid-14th century, and until the early 19th century they lived in a separate “Jewish city”. It was an autonomous enclave governed by internal Jewish authorities: their only sovereign was the king in whose name the Voivode of Krakow exercised authority over the enclave. Before the Second World War, Krakow’s Jewish population of 64,000 accounted for every fourth person in the city. By 1939 the minority had created and developed a social infrastructure capable of furthering their interests and aspirations. It was mostly built up in Kazimierz, which between the two world wars remained a predominantly Jewish district and a natural community resource for the majority of Jewish organisations and institutions. Kazimierz was a focus for the religious life of Krakow’s Jews. They prayed in six major Orthodox synagogues. These were maintained by the Jewish community, yet there were also many houses of prayer which belonged to assorted religious associations and private individuals. Today Kazimierz is one of the best-known areas of Krakow. Teeming with cultural and artistic life, the district especially attracts those who want to feel the spirit of Krakow’s bohemians. Now you will find here plenty of indie galleries, quirky shops, vintage clothing stores and bars that range from hip cocktail dens to shabby-chic spaces. The most Kyivan street of Kyiv - this is how locals often call Andriyivsky Descent🍀 Kyiv Montmartre, winged street, soul of the old city - this street has many names. Andriyivsky Descent is one of the most ancient streets in Kyiv. It charms with its legendary history, special old-Kyiv atmosphere, and unique architectural ensemble. This meandering, cobblestoned street snakes down a hill from the city centre to the ancient Podil neighborhood, and is full of historic sites including the 18th-century St. Andrew’s Church, and many other museums and art galleries. There is even a museum of the history of the street and almost every building here is an architectural monument. Andriyivsky Descent appeared in the times of Kyivan Rus. Back then, it connected the upper and the lower part of the town and was so narrow, that only pedestrians and those on horseback were able to go down it. Only in the 18th century, the street was widened, enabling carriages and loaded carts to pass through it. In the 19th-20th centuries, mainly artists, sculptors, musicians, and writers lived here. It was at that time that the street’s distinct atmosphere and its original look were created. Today, as many years ago, a bohemian atmosphere reigns here. Volodymyrska Hill with a monument to St. Volodymyr - one of the symbols of Kyiv🌿 The monument is often depicted in paintings and photographic works of the city. Park, located on the steep right bank of the Dnipro River in central Kyiv and overlooking the scenic panorama of the left bank of Kyiv is the most famous and prominent landmark of the city. The first historical reference to Volodymyr Hill was in the Primary Chronicles of Kyivan Rus, where it describes Sviatopolk II of Kyiv building the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral in 1108. The hill, on which the cathedral was built, was a citadel within the ancient part of Kyiv, built by and named after Iziaslav I of Kyiv. Volodymyrska Hill park was established in the mid-19th century, its name reflecting the monument to St. Volodymyr which was erected in 1853 in the park. Volodymyrska Hill originally only referred to a park located at the highest and middle terraces of the historic St. Michael's Hill, which was named after St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral and Monastery. Golden Gates in Kyiv is one of the most important architectural and historical monuments remaining from the Kyivan Rus’ period✨ Located in the southwestern part of ancient Kyiv, the Golden Gates was built in 1037 during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. It was constructed at about the same time as Saint Sophia Cathedral and the upper city fortifications, and functioned as the main triumphal entrance and as a defendable portal to the fortified section of the city. The Golden Gates was built of brick and stone and consisted of a tower with a vaulted passageway (12 m high and up to 7.5 m wide), topped by a platform for guards and the small Church of the Annunciation. The passageway probably had a wooden or gilded gate, and there may have been turrets on the tower. The origin of the gate's name is unknown. It may have been named for the roof of the church, which was possibly covered with gold, for the copper fittings or gilt of the gate in the passageway, or for the Golden Gate of Constantinople. In 1240 the Golden Gates was partially destroyed by the Mongols. However, it remained in use as a portal until the middle of the 16th century. In 15th- and 16th-century travelers Paul of Aleppo and Erich Lassota von Steblau mentioned it in their writings, and a drawing (1651) by the Dutch artist Abraham Van Westerfeldt shows the remains of the church. In 1648, after their victory over the Poles, Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky and his army made their triumphal entrance into Kyiv through the Golden Gates. In 1750 the gate's remains were covered with ground.
