Place Henri-Mondor, 97 boulevard Saint-Germain (VIème arrondissement), statue de Danton. Cette place est délimitée par le boulevard Saint-Germain et fréquemment confondue avec ce dernier ainsi qu'avec le carrefour de l'Odéon qui lui est proche mais distinct. Elle porta d'abord le nom de place Broca, du nom du médecin français Paul Broca (1824-1880), en raison de sa proximité avec la faculté de médecine de Paris. Elle sera plus tard renommée d'après le chirurgien et écrivain français Henri Mondor (1885-1962). N'ayant aucune habitation sur son espace cadastral, la place ne possède pas de numérotation officielle. Sur cette place se dresse donc le « Monument à Danton », œuvre du sculpteur Auguste Paris commandée par la Ville de Paris, fondue par Victor Thiébaut et érigée en 1889, à l'occasion du centenaire de la Révolution française. La statue représente Danton debout avec à ses côtés deux jeunes conscrits en armes. La statue repose sur un piédestal : à l’avant sont inscrits « À DANTON – La ville de Paris ». Ce monument a été érigé à la place qu’occupait la maison habitée par Danton dans la partie aujourd’hui démolie de la cour du commerce. En 1887 y avait été érigée une statue de Paul Broca, œuvre du sculpteur Choppin, finalement déplacée dans la cour de l'École d'anthropologie à l'arrivée de la statue de Danton. Le Procope, (entrée principale 13 rue de l'ancienne-comédie, VIème arrondissement), vu depuis la Cour du Commerce-Saint-André. Ce passage, appelé jusqu'en 1877 la Cour-du-Commerce, longe l'emplacement de l'enceinte de Philippe-Auguste. Il est situé sur celui du fossé qui la renforça de 1360 à 1630. Il était occupé au XVIIème siècle par un jeu de boules et le café Procope situé au numéro 13 de la rue de l'Ancienne-Comédie avait sur cette cour une seconde entrée qu'utilisait Danton lorsqu'il s'y rendait. Le percement du boulevard Saint-Germain l'a amputé de la moitié de sa longueur. La plupart de ses maisons (surtout celles du numéro 8 au numéro 4) furent construites en 1776 par Ducellier, futur conventionnel. En 1670 un noble sicilien de 20 ans, venu de Palerme cherchait fortune à Paris, François Procope, de son vrai nom Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, aida à la foire Saint-Germain les Arméniens Pascal et Maliban à débiter en plein vent l’arôme nouveau appelé café, vendu 2 sous et demi la tasse. Il s'installa à son compte en 1675 rue de Tournon, et puis en 1684, rue des Fossés-Saint-Germain, face au jeu de paume de l'Etoile ; le revers de sa maison donnait sur le jeu de boules de Malus, sur l'emplacement duquel est actuellement la Cour du Commerce-Saint-André. Le café Procope eut aussitôt la clientèle du jeu de paume et celle du jeu de boules. En 1689, la Comédie-Française s'installa au jeu de paume de l'Etoile. Dès lors, le café Procope devint le lieu favori des artistes et de leurs admirateurs. C'était le véritable journal parlé de Paris, un foyer de discussion d'idées. Des encyclopédistes aux révolutionnaires (c’est de là que partirent les mots d'ordre pour les attaques des Tuileries des 20 juin et du 10 août 1792), des romantiques à Verlaine, le café Procope fut le Café des courants littéraires et politiques. Fermé définitivement en 1890, puis devenu un établissement de type bouillon Chartier, il rouvre en 1957 sous son nom historique et devient un restaurant, qui est toujours en activité. Not the same location but what similarities! One of my favorite spots in St Germain des Pres was the Cour du Commerce St-Andre’. In the daytime, it’s a hidden discovery - in the evening, it comes to glorious light and life. I’m dining at Restaurant Le Procope, founded in 1686, and it is the oldest cafe in Paris. You can dine inside and feel the ambience of times gone by or choose this hidden passageway watching times unfold. When I sent a picture of my view to my children as I finished my dinner under the stars, my daughter @allynfireheart sent me a picture of her favorite Van Gogh painting “Cafe Terrace at Night” showing the same vibe. ❤️ How does the French sky always look so beautiful?
