Thursday Reminder ๐ It's often a single guiding light that illuminates our path. Whether it's a beacon of hope or a milestone of clarity, landmarks have a way of grounding us, even in the midst of chaos. In moments of confusion, remember: that clarity isn't always about changing our surroundings, but rather fixing our gaze on what truly matters. James Clear's wisdom from "Atomic Habits" reminds us that success isn't a one-time achievementโit's the outcome of our daily habits. We've spoken a little about habit stacking recently and how every small action, every choice we make, contributes to our journey towards success. So, let's focus on cultivating positive daily habits that propel us toward our goals. You still have 10.5 months to kick some goals this year. And while we may still be at the beginning of the year, this is often the time when we slip back in to our older, more comfortable way. We have a choice, make the change we know will benefit us. Even if it's uncomfortable or scary. Or fast forward 10.5 months from now and wish we had... It's up to you ๐ #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
Your phone, laptop, and even your car all need recharging to function at their best. But here's the questionโwhat about YOU?โฃ As we embark on another busy year as a profession, let's remember that YOU deserve a spot at the top of your priority list. Whether it's personal or professional goals, your well-being is the foundation that fuels them all. So, before diving headfirst into the hustle and bustle of the year ahead, let's make a pact: Let's start 2024 right by making ourselves a priority. Dedicate time for self-care, practice mindfulness, and recharge your inner battery. This is absolutely going to be a non-negotiable for me this year. You are the heart and soul of the incredible work you do, and taking care of yourself ensures you can continue to make a difference. Share this post, we need to spread the word amongst our colleagues and community ๐ ๐ท #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
Do you ever feel like you are more likely to do something if you write it down or better yet you tell someone what it is you want to achieve? โฃ It's almost like it keeps you more accountable. Maybe that's why I'm more productive when I post my to do list on my stories? As 2024 is rapidly creeping up on us, what better time than now (not Jan 1st) to think about some goals. They might personal, like competing in an Olympic-distance triathlon! (Ok, thatโs actually on my list for 2025 ๐ดโโ๏ธ) Or professional, like learning how to perform a particular surgical procedure. . No matter what they may be, here are some tips that might help: 1. Be Specific ๐ซ Define your goals with precision. Instead of vague ambitions, make them specific and measurable. For instance, rather than saying, "Exercise more," specify โI will exercise for 30 minutes, five days a week." 2. Set Realistic & Achievable Goals ๐ซ Ensure your goals are within reach. Set targets that challenge you but are attainable with effort. Unrealistic goals might lead to frustration or demotivation. 3. Create a Plan with Milestones ๐ซ This is my personal favourite. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks or milestones. This helps track progress and prevents overwhelm. 4. Accountability and Review ๐ซ Share your goals with someone you trust or find an accountability partner. Regularly review your progressโweekly, monthly, or quarterlyโto stay on track. 5. Focus on Priorities and Integration ๐ซ Consider your priorities across various aspects of lifeโpersonal, professional, health, relationships. Integrate your goals to ensure you're not neglecting one area for the sake of another. Save this post ๐ and happy goal setting! Feel like sharing some of yours? Comment below ๐๐พ
โโโAs veterinary medicine evolves, enabling longer and more comfortable lives for our patients with chronic illness, it's crucial for us as veterinary professionals to recognise the impact caring for these pets has on owners.โโโโโโโโโฃ โโโโโโโโExtensive research confirms caregiver burden is a reality for pet owners, and it is therefore something we should be more mindful of. We're all about actionable solutions:โโโโโโโ so here are 4 ways we can support our clients managing pets with chronic disease: 1๏ธโฃ Use the abbreviated ZBI (aZBI) to quantify caregiver burden.โโโโโโโโ 2๏ธโฃ Regular check-ins to gauge their experience.โโโโโโโโ 3๏ธโฃ Let's create a supportive community within the practice for owners sharing similar challenges. Knowing they're not alone and having a safe space to share is invaluable.โโโโโโโโ 4๏ธโฃ The big talk about end-of-life plansโaddressing it openly can ease the weight of making tough decisions about euthanasia.โโ Let's make caregiver support a priorityโbecause every step counts in their journey too ๐พโโโโโโ ๐ท #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
Trying to remain compassionate to both animal and owner can be challenging, especially during trauma or end-of-life decisions. โฃ Going from a difficult and emotional euthanasia, and having to move straight on to the next client in the waiting room (which could be something really positive like a puppy check-up and vaccination) โ can put a huge strain on our mental health. Especially over time, and particularly if we are not taking time to ensure we are looking after ourselves and practising self-care. The Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project (www.compassionfatigue.org) is a charity dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of compassion fatigue and its effect on caregivers. Their website has a wealth of information, downloadable resources and links to webinars which you and your colleagues may find really beneficial. How do you try to manage stress and compassion fatigue in your role? We would love to hear from you! ๐ท #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
A reminder for your week, to BREATHE ๐ฎโ๐จโฃ We often hold our breath when we are stressed. Causing tension in the body. While we come into this busy period that can bring out many different emotions for our clients (and our colleagues), more so than at other times of the year, here is your reminder to take a breath. Incorporating deep breathing exercises into a daily routine can be a simple yet powerful way to support mental health and overall well-being. Here are some benefits below: ๐ซ Calming the Nervous System ๐ซ Improved Focus and Concentration ๐ซ Emotional Regulation ๐ซ Better Sleep ๐ซ Reduced Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression While it is an unconscious act, making it more conscious can have a highly positive impact. ๐ท #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
How many times have you been drawn into that roundabout discussion of โWhat shall we have for dinnerโ? Or do you get instant rage when your partner asks you โWhere would you like to go tonight?โ If so, chances are youโre familiar with (and likely suffering from) the phenomenon of decision fatigue. ๐ตโ๐ซโฃ Decision fatigue is a syndrome coined by social psychologist Dr. Roy F. Baumeister, and is somewhat based on the Freudian hypothesis of ego depletion; whereby ego depletion is mirrored by the depletion of will power. When oneโs mental capacity is exhausted, does will power even exist? So what does this mean for us? ๐ค If we are to continue to provide an excellent service to our patients and clients, and continue to practice good veterinary medicine, it means we need some pretty robust strategies in our metaphorical โwellbeing toolboxโ to prevent the onset of decision fatigue. There is no escaping the number of decisions we have to make every day in practice, but the following tips (listed in no apparent order) may go a little way to helping limit risky decision making or even decision avoidance. With the majority of people making more than 35,000 decisions per day, decision fatigue is not unique to the veterinary profession. ๐ฑ It is however, important to be aware of it, to acknowledge it, and to take intentional steps towards limiting it โ for the good of our patients, our clients, our colleagues and ourselves. ๐ท #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth

As veterinary professionals, we have a duty of care, not only to the communities we serve, but to our team members as well. โฃ It is therefore definitely time for us to follow our human healthcare colleagues, and begin to foster a culture supportive of the admission, discussion and subsequent reporting of medical misadventures and near misses. What reporting methods does your veterinary practice currently employ? What do you think could work well for your clinic? Get in touch, we would love to hear your thoughts! ๐ท #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
A large part of this is prioritising your own needs, and giving yourself the same level of care you give to others.โฃ Here are five things that you can do you help improve your mental health in practice. 1. Look after your body ๐ ๐๐พ Eat! ๐๐พ Sleep. ๐๐พ Move. ๐๐พ Meditate. ๐๐พ Drink water. 2. Set realistic goals ๐ฅ Ambition, wanting to be the best veterinary professional, provide the highest standard of care to your patients, and be a great team player are all great goals โ but being everything for everyone is not realistic. Learn to be kinder to yourself by setting realistic goals. 3. Value yourself ๐คฉ What do you do to make yourself happy? Do you treat yourself with the same kindness, compassion and empathy as you reward to your patients and pet parents? Very often, we fall into the trap of giving others the best version of ourselves and we are over-critical of our own actions. 4. Surround yourself with genuinely good people ๐ There is a theory that holds: โYou are the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.โ Take a good look at the company you keep. 5. Get the help you need ๐ As veterinary professionals, we often get frustrated when clients wait too long before bringing their pets in; โif only it was diagnosed earlier, I could have made a big differenceโ โ but when it comes to our own mental health, we believe that we can do it ourselves. When you are struggling, allow yourself the same grace. Be aware of your needs, consider a psychologist, counseling or coaching to help you with the tools to thrive both professionally and personally! Save this post ๐
There is no question that mistakes occur in veterinary medicine; we are human after all. But what do we do when these errors or near misses occur? What protocols do we have in place to deal with these misadventures? How can we assure our clients that patient safety is a top priority?โฃ As veterinary professionals we have a duty of care, not only to the communities we serve, but to our team members as well. It is therefore definitely time for us to follow our human healthcare colleagues, and begin to foster a culture supportive of the admission, discussion and subsequent reporting of medical misadventures and near misses. A VERY important reminder for our students, new, and recent graduates - You are NOT an imposter simply because you're new to this profession. โฃ Every experienced veterinary professional was once where you are now โ eager to learn, grow, and make a difference. ๐ซ You BELONG to this amazing profession. ๐ซ You are an incredibly IMPORTANT member of our profession. ๐ซ You are EXACTLY where you are meant to be. So, repeat this quote to yourself every single day, and embrace being a beginner! ๐ท #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
FUN FACT: Did you know that the number one factor that determines whether a client is likely to visit your veterinary practice is whether or not you have parking! ๐โฃ Wait, what? So it's not necessarily the veterinary team, the potential care we might provide, or the cost of our services that is the INITIAL drawcard. ๐คฏ ๐๐พ Client loyalty has definitely changed over the last few years. Which is not necessarily a negative thing if, for example, they are not receiving the service they are looking for. But certainly frustrating if it's because they are chasing a cheaper option (or more often than not, a perceived cheaper option). How often do you see a patient, generate a diagnosis (or working diagnosis) and then prescribe a specific treatment or management option, only for that client not to return for their recheck? Is it because the patient got better / the problem resolved? Is it because the client is worried about spending more money? Or is it because they are not happy with the service provided, and they have moved to a different practice? How often do you follow up with them to find out - or would you rather not know? Or perhaps you would like to follow up, you just don't have the time to do so! We would love to hear what you and your team are currently doing in your practice to promote client loyalty!
In an ideal world, you would have both! ๐๐ฝโ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ HOWEVER, depending on what stage in your career you are at, there is the possibility that you may value one more than the other. It's an interesting question to ask yourself, as it provides some insight into what you are willing to tolerate in order to reach a particular career goal. โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ We would love to know your answer in the comments

I myself am so guilty of ordering food more than I should.โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ Last week's blog post was about the link between nutrition and mental health and how we as veterinary professionals can start to implement better food choices easily. โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ Click the link in our bio to read the blog post ๐ฝโโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ ๐ทโโโโโโโโ #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth
Things I wish I had known as a recent graduate ๐พโโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ After years of dedicated study and sacrifice, you are finally in possession of that degree that opens so many doors and grants you entry into one of the best professional vocations. โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ From someone about to embark on their 17th year in practice, here are a few little words of wisdom that I wished someone had passed on to me in my first couple of years out.โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ 1๏ธโฃ If itโs not working out, do something about it!โโโโโโโโ Rushing to accept the first job that is offered to you can sometimes result in a partnership that is not quite the right fit. If you find yourself feeling like you made the wrong choice, that this job is not the one for you, itโs absolutely ok to acknowledge the fact. As hard as it might be, and as much as you might be feeling you have somewhat failed (which you havenโt by the way), you need to acknowledge the fact. For your mental health, your career satisfaction, and for those that you work with. If you reflect on your time and can appreciate the lessons you have learned (both good and bad), then you should be able to leave in an amicable manner, maintaining relationships and knowing you have done your best.โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ 2๏ธโฃ Itโs ok to not be ok, but please let somebody know!โโโโโโโโ Being a veterinarian is full of hurdles, and it is 100% ok to feel emotional about them; to feel disappointed, hurt, upset, or even angry. Whatever you do, please know it is absolutely ok to feel under pressure or overwhelmed, just donโt try and deal with it all on your own.โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ 3๏ธโฃ First impressions are not always what they seem.โโโโโโโโ For me, this has been especially true when it comes to certain veterinary nurses and a number of clients. In fact, several of the nurses that I was initially very intimidated by ended up being my most favourite to work with, not to mention great friends.โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ Do you have anything to add to this list?
If you know, you know ๐โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ Tag the person who helped get you through vet school ๐ โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ ๐ทโโโโโโโโ #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth #cpd #vetcpd #cpdforvets #elevateyourpractice #cpdpoints #veted #veteducation #postgradqualifications #continuedprofessionaldevelopment #professionaldevelopment #professionaldevelopmentcourseperth #professionladevelopmentcourseaustralia #cpdaus
Happy International Women's Day to all of our female veterinary professionals! ๐โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ In an interview, Dr. Rosanne Taylor, previous Dean of the School of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney, said that when she began her career 35 years ago, her innate abilities were often questioned. โWas I strong enough? Could I drive a large vehicle? Was I prepared to work hard and for long hours? Was I serious about staying in the profession? These are the questions young female vets faced in the 1970s and โ80s.โโโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ Thankfully much has changed within our profession over the past few decades, with 80 percent of veterinary medicine graduates and 60 percent of practitioners now being women; and while we still have a way to go, we are certainly making strides in the right direction. ๐ช๐ฝโโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ So, to all of our superwomen veterinarians and veterinary nurses, who really are doing it all, we celebrate you! ๐โโโโโโโโ โโโโโโโโ ๐ทโโโโโโโโ #vetwellness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #vetmentalhealth #vetstagram #reliefvet #vetburnout #vetcommunity #healthandwellnesstips #vettips #vettipsandtricks #retreatperth #networkingeventsperth #eventsperth #cpdevents #cpdeventsperth โโโโโโโโ #vetnurse #vetnurselife #veterinarynurse #mentalhealthinvetmed #veterinarytechnicians #vettechs #vetmed #vetmedlife #vetnursesofinstagram #veterinarymedicineselfcare #IWD #internationalwomensday #womenvet #womanvet
