Longwinded introductions are not my forte, but I returned to Norfolk State for the Department of Mass Communications & Journalism’s “We, the Storytellers” special panel during MCJR Week. Dr. Jackson extended my invitation, and upon enrollment at 17, she was one of the first professors to get me together. If I attempted to sneak into the back of her class, she’d stop the world like, “So nice of you to join us five minutes late, little Puerto Rico!” Lol. (I’m much better about time now.) She implemented a lesson on Caribbean news after meeting my Afro-Boricua grandmother. My path took longer as a first-gen kid juggling three jobs to pay for tuition but she understood. When I was still screening for Lupus, she, Dr. Brockington, and Professor Hoffler-Foster were the educators who exemplified empathy. Unbeknownst to me, she also taught my mentor, Taiia Smart Young, 15 years earlier. This program helped me find my way. It asserted that I could start something and finish it. But there's one kind of project that always gets me fired up: large-scale collateral! 🔥 My love for these big designs started back in college during an internship at a law firm. On one of my first few days, they told me they needed their giant digital billboard updated, ASAP! It was the biggest piece I'd ever designed, and I was a little nervous. But when it was all done and approved, whoa! Seeing my work displayed HUGE for everyone on the highway was amazing. 🖼️ Fast forward to my last job before going freelance, and I got to work on super cool wall murals and wraps for trucks! The best part? Knowing my art would be out there for months, even years! Large-scale collateral lets you leave a big mark. 🚚🖌️ Large-scale collateral is awesome because you get to pour all your creative ideas into something tons of people will see every single day. The Tomasa Zapata Cooperative service station at the Forty Acres where you could fill up for gas, get your car repaired, seek legal advice, and obtain healthcare even if you didn’t speak English. Cesar Chavez stayed in a room here to complete a 25 day hunger strike for farm workers rights. It’s little known knowledge that this strike would not have been successful without the Manongs - Philip Veracruz (who you can see holding Chavez up in the photo), Larry Itliong, Pete Velasco and the support of the Filipino farm workers. They faced discriminatory laws forbidding them to marry anyone here in the US, so many ended up becoming elderly and alone. The Agbayani Village was formed to house them in retirement, as they had no one else but each other. Not sure any of them are alive anymore. Gotta share these stories - make sure their legacy lives on. Here’s how this project came about. I wanted to make a nice wool shirt, an all day piece that can be worn on cold morning drives but also still appropriate for nice evenings out. I wanted it to have some automotive touches but not be over the top or too obvious. Growing up in LA, I wanted it to be reminiscent of a Pendleton but slightly heavier and with a shirttail cut. So here it is. Double breast pockets with Porsche pepita houndstooth under the flaps. The same details are under the cuffs and on the inside across the shoulders. Zero visible branding from the outside for a classic silhouette. This went from idea to pattern to reality…completely from scratch, so I wanted to showcase this again to give it the attention it deserves. We made this badass video to showcase it, but I think it was outshined by Jake’s good looks and the Bulletproof Scout. Some of you have seen the sample and have asked to purchase it, but I only made two, one as a gift to Jake and the other to showcase for preorders. These aren’t cheap to make, and being a small business I didn’t want to invest a large chunk of capital to produce full inventory, so I opted to do a preorder model to gauge interest. I hope you all can appreciate the work that goes into creating a unique piece like this. My wife and I have very different tastes in music, but there’s one common genre we both love…oldies. We both grew up doing homework while listening to Art Laboe play Brenton Wood, Smokey Robinson, Sly, Slick & Wicked, Billy Stewart, Four Tops…the list can go on forever. As a matter of fact, at our wedding we didn’t have table numbers, each table was named after an oldies song (shout out to table Agony & Ecstasy, life of the party). Our signature cocktails were called Confessing a Feeling and Love T.K.O. Anyway, I heard some oldies blasting out of car stereos today in East Pasadena and I immediately knew it was the lowrider cruise. As I walked the boulevard framing up shots and hearing all the oldies, I started to feel super sentimental about marriage…being able to do what I do because of a great spouse. Earlier in the day I watched @savantyoung and his wife run the @vintagejapanesemotorunion store together - beautiful. I was capturing older couples in front of me cruising together - beautiful. I think being able to maintain a marriage says a lot about a man’s character, so shout out to all the fellas out there doing it. I was once told by a good friend, never do business with a man that cheats on his wife, because if they can cheat on their wife, they can most definitely screw you over too. I’ll never forget that. Right before I left, I saw a familiar heart shaped pillow in the backseat of a car. We give those pillows to patients in the ICU after open heart surgery. There was a sense of pride in that I possibly helped one of these guys out here live a little longer to be with his family and enjoy his favorite hobby. Lots of feelings today, maybe it was the time change.
