This Wednesday, May 1 at 6 pm, we’ll be chatting with @kamalsinclair on Instagram Live about some of her favorite public artworks, including the newly opened Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. Overlooking the Alabama River, Freedom Monument Sculpture Park honors the lives and memories of the 10 million Black people who were enslaved in America and celebrates their courage and resilience. The sculpture park is the third site created by the Equal Justice Initiative (founded by Bryan Stevenson) in Montgomery, Alabama, which is dedicated to taking an unflinching look at the country’s history of slavery, racism and discriminatory policing. At this 17-acre site along the very river where tens of thousands of enslaved people were trafficked, breathtaking art and original artifacts invite an immersive, interactive journey and provide a unique view into the lives of enslaved people. The park officially opened on March 27, 2024. Works by Hank Willis Thomas, Simone Leigh, Rayvenn D’Clark, Alison Saar, and many more artists are featured in the park. ***Design Is The Message*** (4/4) Reimagining Public Spaces by Adrienne Lau Published in Dec/Jan 24 issue of @architecturemagazineuk With publicness comes responsibility. What does a reimagined public space communicate to thousands of people who encounter it? To reach out to everyone, It is important that physical designs carry sensory messages that transcend language. To ‘recentre nature’, an insect hotel totem stood right in the middle of the station roundabout. The bonding blocks orientated people towards local green spaces with walking distances to champion active traveling. Similarly, edible fragrant herbs planted in the timber portal sent aroma down grimy Bakery Path, raising awareness of urban food growing. In this fetid and unpleasant daily route of many, a moss ring framed a security mirror at a turning corner. Its fluffy form softened a space full of metal fences and barb wires. It framed the reflection of the world in nature. The scenographic experience was an act of defiance to the inhospitable environment and uplifted the commute of locals. Rumi, the 13th century poet, offered the artist an inspiration for this piece as his verse suggests that an unrefined soul can polish itself to attain enlightenment, just as base metal smoothes into a reflective mirror. Shirin Abedinirad’s installation echoes this sentiment regarding the boundless adaptability of our hearts and minds as we commit to enlightened understanding over calcified assumption. Very cool new public artwork on Place Marie de Gournay in the nascent ‘Belvedere’ district of Bordeaux: ‘La Carte, à l’ombre de la ville’, by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich, is a 400-square-metre aluminium canopy held up by 14 five-metre metallic pine trees. The full piece is in the shape of a map of the city of Bordeaux, which pleasantly stretches out overhead by looking up, or can also be viewed at ground level when the sun is out! I’m so pleased that The Dyson Cancer Centre is finally open and being used by the public. It's been quite a journey to this point and I am very grateful to have been be part of it. It is so exciting to see this amazing project completed and the dream become a reality. My contribution has been to create a series of artworks for five individual treatment rooms, one long design for the main chemotherapy suite that stretches over 25 meters, some smaller pieces for the inpatient corridors and a design for the huge main reception desk. It is really exciting that healthcare Trusts and architects are including biophilic work to create positive spaces for people experiencing challenging times. The overarching theme behind all my designs is the ‘Green Heart Garden’ which, once constructed, will be visible and accessible for all service users of the Centre. As part of my design process, much of my research was carried out by visiting the Piet Oudolf garden at Hauser and Wirth. For the main reception desk design, we chose to focus on the plant Phlomis. Its' structural qualities seemed perfect for this area. The plant shapes were printed onto the face of the desk and then routed into the back of the composite material. This was done at different depths and once backlit the design shines through and looks beautiful. It was a complicated concept and the construction was tricky, but it was really worth it once you see the final results! It has been two years since I started working on his project. I have learnt so much over that time, and this continues to feed into my projects. I am a proud @artpopstreetgallery alumni and wish to express my appreciation for the organization’s assistance in showcasing my artwork on a global scale. In 2022, I was one of the winners of the artist call, and ArtPop provided us with a platform to display our talents. ArtPop has continued to support local artists in the area, helping them gain recognition. In 2022, my artwork was showcased at five different locations (Edsa, Metro Manila, Makati C5, Magallanes, Antipolo), in the Philippines, my country of origin. Thank you @doohph ❤️🇵🇭.
