Ok, now for the whole weekend report lol We set our sights on the Virginia fishery since Maryland thinks that not killing fish is killing fish… think about that for a minute🤯🤔🤦🏻♂️ #stopdemonizingcatchandrelease #itworks @adventuresofteets and I launched late on Saturday morning targeting red drum and really anything else that we could find on structure, points, shoals, and flats with good tidal current. These are the same things we’d look for up in our home portion of the Chesapeake bay so we stuck to our guns in the Virginia portion. Experimenting with an assortment of artificial lures is what helped us in the long run because you always think “big baits big fish” but more often then not there is an elephant ready to eat peanuts anywhere you go. We found 2 bull reds, Dales 50” and my 48” (and also my new red drum pb💪🏽) and 2 black drums up to 27” that hit on 4” @zmanfishingproducts and @bustem_baits paddle tails paired with 1oz @geyejigs. Slowly jigging and so slow that you’re almost dragging the lures across the bottom is the presentation all of the drums wanted. Sunday we had the honor of joining @chesapeake_fishing_adventures in search of more bull reds. Brad scoped out a few on his side scan but we weren’t able to snipe them out. He put us on some structure that was holding fish and ended up being bluefish with a couple of mega donkeys in the mix. The biggest that I caught was 1/4” shy of being a trophy sitting pretty at 33-3/4” but shewwweee it was still the biggest bluefish I’ve ever seen with my own two eyes… again, another elephant eating a peanut situation as I took this fish on a 4” hard jerkbait 😳. The Chesapeake bay and its world class fishery is something to cherish and these photos deserved more than being locked into a video on my feed. My homies @kylehofstetter and @adventuresofteets helped me capture a small glimpse into one of our many interaction’s with these migrating monsters that travel thousands of miles of the Atlantic only to end up in our back yard every year to spawn. We truly are so lucky to be able to say hi to these giants then immediately and safely set them free to do what they came to do. Another 🥜🐘situation from a couple days ago but here’s the story about why I use this jig…. . . Last year, my bro @bulletslacrosse16 gifted me a couple jigs and the @fish_shimano_north_america Current Sniper was one that he highly recommended. He said last winter he never took it off and used it as a way of getting the small fish out of the way but to also draw other fish to the boat while fighting hooked fish. I used it to get the small fish out of the way in one area then I used it to get the upper 40” fish out of the way in another lolol🤯🤣😭 When you’re seeing nothing but rain minnows schooled up at the waters surface and giants spitting them up when you land them, it only makes sense to throw this. Well, we found some fish today all in open water with little to no help from the birds and we literally saw 3 boats all day which were not even near the fish we were catching lol👀😍🔥 . . I struck gold just as the sun was peaking out this morning. We were scanning shelves that we’ve drifted multiple times in the past few weeks and saw 3 fish on the @humminbird sidescan on one of our passes. I was lucky enough to snipe a good one out of that wolf pack. Then we went the rest of the morning scanning other shelves with nothing to show for it til we spotted some turns pecking from across the bay around noon. They were sitting on the water’s surface by the time we finally reached them but their inactivity made no difference to the craziness we saw on the depth finder when we got there. We caught a bunch of 20”-30” fish on the first long drift then reset for another and the bigs came out to play. We made 3 long drifts before we had to search again. I got another good one and Dale hooked a couple good ones in a row….. one was bailed up by a smaller one that I hooked first which had a monster follow that fish up from the depths. Dale fed her a jig and the rest was history. I had the privilege of fishing with some absolute legends today. Lonnie the owner of @geyejigs, Nick the owner of @takwaterman, and my homie @bulletslacrosse16 the owner of a crap ton of menhaden flavor procure, were all slaying it today. We had a ton of good fish over the rail and most of the day was spent all by ourselves picking off fish one by one in completely open water with sitting birds and slicks to help lead the way at times. It’s always cool to hear different perspectives on how fish and birds might act. My favorite quote from today was “I think the birds dip down just to taste the water sometimes rather than to scoop up food” ~Lonnie Johnson. So when you roll over to birds that were just dipping into the water and don’t mark anything, just remember, birds have to drink too lol. The 40”+ fish did not elude us today…. We fished our final bay tourney in yesterday’s blinding fog which was super challenging. “The Norm” is always a bitter sweet one for us since it really does signify the end of the year for the @pyyfishing team. But for the past 4 years, Captain Steve Wagner has consecutively led his team to placing, if not winning, this particular tourney. Thanks to @mhatch75 and @pyymarine the Tiki Lee’s Rockfish Open was another fun event. We got our asses handed to us by some wind and rain on Saturday then a gail on Sunday😱 but the @cape_horn_official performed like she always does…. Flawlessly! We caught fish from 7” to 27” lol but nothing scale worthy. With the crew I had on board (except JR @jiggedupunlimited not being able to joint us Sunday due to illness), it was impossible to bring morale down even when we weren’t catching. My zone🔥😍 . . I find solace in the short periods of time I have on the water by myself with the bird but also with no other boats around. The day I have to anchor on top of other anchored boats to catch fish while trying to chase a report is the day I will put the rods up for good and start coin collecting instead. I take pride in the hunt and to be able to actually find the fish that are in route to their destination. Passing the fleets of boats to try my known areas and find more secluded hunting grounds makes me feel lucky because I know the potential of the fishery rather than catching my limit and think that’s what it’s about. Search around, take a risk to learn something and expect to skunk, try new methods, start to understand the fishes behavior with currents, tides, depth contours, structure, and temperatures….. I promise you will love fishing way more and be more proud of the fish you catch. Just enjoy it, it’s not a race nor is it a contest. I got a childhood friend’s husband out on Baltimore’s urban fishery this morning and it seems as though the invasive stripers he’s used to catching in Arizona are no different than the residents of the Chesapeake Bay. It was cool to have another like minded fisherman on board changing up tactics to adapt to each situation. We stayed bowed up most of the morning on the jig, jerkbait, and topwater and had the quality bite all to ourselves. It was a tough but fun day fishing our last tourney of the year, yesterday. Another one of mixing up tactics from casting light tackle to trolling the spread, which are both highly effective ways of finding the “big one” this time of year. This will be the 3rd consecutive year we’ve placed in this particular tournament, “The Norm”. Last year we were the lead boat and the year before we placed 3rd. Our buddies Ryan with team “Primetime” and Keith with team @alltackle both did very well as they took 1st and 2nd place this year but we held on tight to 3rd place with a 30-3/8” fish as our team’s largest, missing 2nd place by a half inch.
